WTW Big Kitty Kitty, Dead Kitty Kitty

I went most of my whole born put together without seeing a Bobcat or Lynx. Grandpa tells me he has only seen a few in his 84 years. They were already very rare where we live in by 30Â’s. But since the reintroduction of turkeys a decade ago their numbers have increased steadily. They support quite a few predators weÂ’ve not seen much of. We have even some reports of the odd cougar the last few years. But the main beneficiary has been the smaller lynx, bobcats and coyotes.

The coyotes look fat and happy and even though the cats are very shy IÂ’ve seen three in the last two years. Found my fourth this weekend just across the road from my house. He had been struck by a car. ItÂ’s a shame, not the way I wanted to find one. On the good side he was a big male not a nursing female. So hopefully old Tom Lynx has some offspring nearby and the next pic I get will be of them. My digicam was down(charge) when I first found him so I did not get the best possible pics. When I found him he was as big as my medium size dog. About 40 lbs, a strong fine well fed animal. Hate to see him hit that way. No I donÂ’t think they are dangerous. DonÂ’t mind a cat or two, keeps down the varmints. But the wildlife here in Bumfuct has been making a comeback. Bald Eagles, Blue Herrons, turkeys and some medium sized predators are more comon. And thatÂ’s nice to know. IÂ’ll put the pics in the extended warning they are not very pretty. Maybe next time I hope. more...

1 So cool. I always root for predators to return. Never seen a cougar, bobcat, lynx...although in twenty years of living in a relatively urban/suburban mix, I have twice seen foxes at around 3am. Thrilling. And bald eagles nest nearby, and I've seen those. Eagles and other predators are vital to the eco-system. There should be more wolf-re-introduction.

2 I only have one Bobcat story. Several years ago Mission Control (my wife) and I took a group of cub scouts to the zoo. There's a place in the zoo with kiddie play thingies right next to some cages containing wildcats, including the bobcat. While waiting for Mission Control to finish up at one of the kiddie play areas, the cub scouts were admiring the bobcat across the way. Suddenly, the bobcat jumped up and bit the head off a bird that had perched in its fence, head on the inside and body on the outside. The bobcat got a nice snack and the remainder of the bird fell outside the cage. To this day, the boys still talk about it.

The comeback of the bald eagle is one of the great achievements of the environmental movement (although the removal of DDT has been a mixed bag for the third world). And yeah, a lot of Republicans like the late great John Chafee deserve credit. %%%%%% The number of bald eagles in the lower 48 states reached an all-time low in 1963 when there were only 417 documented nesting pairs. The decline began with the arrival of the Europeans and the settlement of the continent. The bald eagle faired poorly against man's enormous consumption of natural resources. The dwindling food supply and scarce undisturbed roosting areas resulted in reduced bald eagle survival rates. To make matters worse, the birds were being shot and poisoned by ignorant ranchers who thought eagles were killing their livestock. By the 1950s, even eagles that had survived man's direct assault by inhabiting remote areas began to exhibit alarmingly low reproductive rates. Eagle watchers determined that a high percentage of mated pairs were not nesting. Even when eggs were laid they seldom hatched. The National Audubon Society initiated a census and study of bald eagles in 1960 to assess the impact of the declining reproductive rates. Research studies conducted during the early 1960s indicated that the cause of the bald eagle's rapid decline was the overuse of insecticides such as DDT. Poisons used to kill insects at the lower end of the food chain accumulated and increased in toxicity at the upper end of the food chain. The effect on eagles depended on the level of toxicity. For the higher levels the birds became infertile or were too sick to nest. For lower levels the laid eggshells were so thin that the weight of the bird during incubation crushed them. In 1972 the Environmental Protection Agency banned almost all uses of DDT in the United States.

5 I have yet to see a bobcat or lynx, but maybe soon. Last weekend Mrs. fluffy and I saw a wild turkey strut through the backyard. We had a mild winter, which I suspect saw a lot more birds survive to spring.

Help Troops Keep It Cool

I would like to get cool scarf to every hero on our list, THE TEMPERATURES IN IRAQ ARE WELL OVER 100 DEGREES, and will stay that way till SeptemberÂ….
Â…We have over 12,000 heroes on this fourth deployment.
The scarves cost 1.20 and the shipping is 1.12, about 2.50 ea.
So in order to do this we need 25,000 dollars, not a small feat but these scarves help to keep their brains cool and offers comfort to our heroes.

Drop a picture of Mr. Lincoln and that covers two of our fine soldiers.

Carry-on Bag Update: Pork Leather?

Packing update: In response to the many suggestions made by readers here about what I ought to take with me in my carry-on bag, just in case the fit hits the shan, the following thought occured to me:

Do they make a pig-skin leather? Because if they did, that would solve a lot of problems.

Pork dual action strangling /mujahidin repellent belt: check

Patent pig-skin leather 10 eyed steel-toed Dr. Martin's boots / hijacker club: check

Ham wristwatch band, with boomerang action and concealed strangling wires: check

WTW Barbecue

One of the ways Howie had been fighting high gas prices is I had a deep freeze full of deer. I had one big ass roast left. Monday I rested from a 64 hour week and celebrated my first death threat by having a glass of fine homemade wine and slapping that sucker on the Barbecue for 7 hours, tasty. 1 Howie, BBQ deer roast? Say it ain't so. BBQ the brisket, make steaks, sausage, and deer hamburger out of the rest. BBQ raccoons every time, as the taste of the meat is better when hidden by BBQ sause. And the last bit of deer meat, and season is several months away. Better crank up that 4x4 and do some night riding in hopes of getting some fast food. Haha, great post, Howie!

2 I had never done a deer roast so I gave it a try. It's was pretty good really. Good excuse to sit by the grill all damn day too. We had some smaller roasts and we did those in the oven and used the leftovers for stew. I have no idea what the guy at the locker plant was thinking. This thing was huge would nto fit in the pan. So... Anyway Grandpa's chest type deep freeze was stuffed a fe weeks ago with. One cow. Two pigs, Two deer and about 50 lbs of fish. He was here take this and that and some of this. He's always ahead of me. We'll be OK.

5 JJ: Sausage? Surely you jest. What a waste of perfectly good venison. The parts most folks use for sausage I either bar-be-que [ribs, brisket] or cut into 1/2" cubes to make chili. The rest of the deer is made into steaks/chops and some small roasts. I'm with you about B-B-Q ing roast, though. Pot roast, iron pot, low and slow. If you're short, Howie, I still have plenty from last season that I'm trying hard to deplete before the season. Can't let the wife think that I don't need to go to the camp for a week or so.

7 Yeah, Graeme, raccoon is pretty poor eating, but my dad always said, "if you kill it, you eat it". No wasting meat in our family. That's why I quit hunting raccoons in about the 10th grade. And Charlie, I had a guy process some of my meat into sausage, and it is the best sausage I have ever had. Very lean, with cajun seasoning, and is it ever heavenly. Even the Islamos can eat deer sausage, not that I would give them any, mind you.

8 That clears things up for me JJ. I just wondered why, with an abundance of fish and game in Texas, you were running around hunting raccoons. I'm not one for the unusual varieties of wild game. As a kid I tried armadillo, but I suffered an allergic reaction (not sure if it was the meat or the seasonings) so I stay away from them. That makes me one of the few odd ones in my family. I've got relatives who love making and eating stewed possum.

9 Graeme, are they from the American South? A possum eater who tried armadillo sounds like a true blue, or should I say gray, confederate. Where in the wide world did you get armadillo, Graeme? And as a kid growing up, there was hardly anything more fun than staying up all night listening to the hounds running and then treeing a coon. Then it was helter-skelter through the woods to see who could be the first one to get the coon. After I had to eat a couple, I always let my friends win the race, but I enjoyed the hunt, and staying out all night by the campfire, and shooting the breeze, and smoking cigars, and drinking Lone Star long necks(don't tell my mama I did that), and Lisa and Joanie sneaking out of their house and joining us, and, well, one does have to be discreet about some things, right.

We've already brought you news that Egyptian blogger Alaa was arrested. Egyptian Sandmonkey makes the following suggestion to help:

We have started an e-mail campaign to the Egyptian embassies and the US State Department in order to push for his release, and have started protests in front of the Egyptian embassy and consulates in the US for his release. We will also hold protests in France, Italy and Gemany. We could use your help in getting the word out and sending them an e-mail demanding his release.

Egyptian blogger Arrested

Alaa, blogger, co-founder of the egyptian blog aggregator Manalaa and democracy activist, got arrested today during a protest to support the Judiciary's branch fight for independence. He, and about 10 others, were rounded up in the street, beaten up and thrown in a police car.
