Loose lips sink ships

Pyjamasmedia reminds us that the blurting out of vital secrets by a reckless media is not new. The NY Times, in disclosing the details of US intelligence operations in time of war, is simply continuing a long tradition.

The example they give is the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut that resulted in over 200 casualties, a bombing that might have been prevented had the media not disclosed that US Intelligence was intercepting signals between terrorists in Syria and their paymasters in Tehran.

Reading the story reminded me of an incident during the 1982 Falklands war. The Royal Navy task force was operating several thousand miles away from its nearest base, without proper aircraft carriers. Air defence was, too say the least, a problem. Thankfully a combination of a few very good Harrier pilots and the Sea Dart missile system made life very difficult for the attacking Argentinian airforce, forcing them to operate at extremely low altitudes and release their bombs sometimes as little as 40ft above their target.

There were 2 consequences of this. Firstly the Royal Navy developed a certain professional respect for the skill and bravery of the Argentinian airforce pilots (the only people in the Argentinian military who acquited themselves well in the war). Secondly the Argentinian bombs, because they were released so low, didn't have sufficient time to arm themselves before hitting their target. A large percentage of the small number that hit didn't explode as they'd been configured for medium altitude release (these were pre 'smart bomb' days).

And then the BBC stepped in.

The BBC World Service, after receiving what was probably a confidential briefing on the matter from the Ministry of Defence, decided to broadcast the nature of the problem to the world. Shortly afterwards Argentinian bombs began to explode with greater frequency.

The Royal Navy task force commander, Admiral Sandy Woodward, later said in his memoirs that the BBC were more concerned with being "fearless seekers after truth" than with the lives of British servicemen.

In a separate incident in the same war Lieutenant-Colonel H. Jones, threatened to lead the prosecution of senior BBC officials for treason after they disclosed British plans for an attack on an area of the islands known a Goose Green. He was unable to do so as he was later killed in action in that same area.

We don't yet know what damage the leak via The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal will cause, if any.

What we do know is that these "fearless seekers after truth" can be trusted about as far as you can comfortably spit a rat.

Stick A Fork in Dan Rather

Dan Rather is done. He won't, however, admit that Rathergate was his undoing. I'm not surprised.

From USAToday.com:

Dan Rather, who stepped down as anchor of The CBS Evening News 15 months ago in the wake of the Memogate scandal, said Thursday that he'll soon leave the network after 44 years -- at the request of network executives.

"They wanted this resolution, and I'm willing to accept that and move on," said Rather, 74, whose contract expires in November.

It's not clear what Rather is moving on to. Maybe he can help O.J. find the killer of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman.

Commence Tragic Milestone Watch

From Mein Blogovault.

As opposed to real milestones like dually elected governments emerging from tyranny or terrorist leaders meeting their well-deserved ends, the media is trying to rescue its now lost "everything is bad for the GOP/America/Iraq" narrative by "reminding" people of things that they already are well aware of.

According to Lt. Smash, it looks like the Democrats are going to once again try to use the (apparent) significance of "two side-by-side zeroes" to formulate another negative headline and soundbytes to caterwaul around the media. The media, predictably, will be all too happy to oblige them since being knocked upside their collective skulls with the Rove non-indictment, the surging economy, the surprise and well-recieved trip into the warzone by the President and the death of a major (media hyped) al-Qaeda leader has left them a bit...off their game. And make no mistake - it is a game to the press.

None of these people (Democrats or press members) seem to be able, when pressed, to explain what exactly is so insignificant about fallen hero #2,499. Their emphasis on certain military deaths as headline-generators is sickening and sadly typical of a group of people who are more grounded in personal hatred of their political opponents than in the well-being and support of the nation's military.

And don't you dare question any of their "patriotism." Just don't, you massacre-covering, mass-murdering, cold-blooded fascist baby-killing, American-hegemonic-enabling monster. Speak truth to power instead. Right?

Their best attempt at discerning the "newsworthiness" of this number is that it (somehow) is a "psychologically" significant number. The fact that fallen hero #2,499 and #2,500 (or #2,501) are "different" in their minds is a point of contention to me and no doubt to many others. Both laid down their lives for their nation. Both have families that are no doubt grieving and dealing with the loss. But #2,500? That's a different story altogether! That's a "milestone."

It rather effectively supports the thesis that the media and that the Democrats do not really care about individual troops, their sacrifices or their accomplishments - so as long as we get to the next double-zero. Further evidence of this sickening obsession with evenly-rounded body counts comes from Common Dreams (a leftist Democrat supporting group), who chose to "commemorate" this "milestone" with a silent (oh, how reverent) anti-war/pro-surrender protest march. Rather than do something honorable, like perhaps laying a wreath at a memorial or raising money for slain troops families, they felt that making political and media-centric hey over the death of # 2500 is the right way to "honor" the memory of the fallen.

If that wasn't enough, the agit-prop brigade made "visuals" so that everyone can see how much these marchers "care" about the troops. These visuals included "banners, signs and flag-draped coffins." Actually, they aren't coffins. They are cardboard boxes created by puppeteers who think that street theater is going to stop the United States from pursuing Islamic terrorists worldwide.

Where will they be, however, when # 2,501 falls? I'll tell you where they'll be - right where they are right now. Home in their mothers' basements, bragging to their Kossak and FireDogLake minions while patting themselves on the back for a job well-done and a fun afternoon of "caring."

Support the troops - erradicate leftist agit-prop and troop smearing whenever confronted with it.

Also - Check out this DUmmie thread to verify that the nutroots do indeed follow the aforementioned pattern like Pavlovian dogs.

Are a Million Spanish Protesters Newsworthy?

Apparently, it depends on what they're protesting.

Protesting a war? Newsworthy.

Protesting the Spanish government's appeasement of terrorists? Not so newsworthy.

Is the Right Being Outgunned in Online Video?

OK, so I had this idea. Being a huge believer in online video as an effective medium, I figured I'd do my part to highlight conservative / libertarian videos I could find posted on the web.

Of course, Michelle Malkin and the other talented folks at HotAir.com are doing an excellent job of producing and highlighting conservative video, but they certainly don't need any help from the likes of me. I was specifically looking for some amateur videos "off the beaten path," so to speak.

To make a long story short... more...

In defence of honest mistakes.

I like Michelle Malkin. I like her writing, I like her speaking and, of course, I like the fact that she is, without any doubt ... hot.

I've begun to like Good Lieutenant (even though there's no evidence of hotness) but I have to wade into the 'hyperventilating anti-US reporting' post made earlier today and which has been running on Michelle Malkin's site for some time.

You are shooting at the wrong target.

The Times is not an Anti-American paper. It supported (and continues to support) the war in Afghanistan. It supported (and continues to support) the war in Iraq. It supported (and continues to support) the war on terror. It criticises, but it criticises tactics not strategy and we all do that.

Somebody (probably a hungover picture editor) made a mistake. S**t happens. When the mistake was pointed out to them, they apologised.

They didn't apologise in 36 point Times New Roman on the front page. It would be commercial suicide and the Times isn't some lefty cooperative that thinks that losing money is morally invigorating.

Demanding that they do makes us sound, well, a bit left wing. Its the left that continually hyperventilates, its the left that thinks that everyone who disagrees with them is an idiot, its the left that believes that there's a vast conspiracy plotting to undermine them. LetÂ’s continue to allow them to monopolise that particular set of qualities. It's what they're good at. It's why they keep on losing.

There are Anti-American newspapers here in the UK (perhaps a post about the media scene here might be useful in the near future?) but The Times is not one of them. In the meantime, if you want to criticise a UK media source, might I suggest that a suitable target would be virtually anything written or broadcast by Al-BBC?

Bias Most Foul (UPDATED)

Conservatives have long known that the so-called mainstream media have a liberal bias that has only recently been offset somewhat by the rise of talk radio and rightwing blogs.

Apparently, talking points were distributed in the past year or so instructing liberals to argue that, in fact, the MSM is completely objective, or that, if bias is present, it doesn't tilt to either left or right in the aggregate. It's all reminiscent of the Left's love affair with the monster Stalin, denying his true nature even as his score of murdered peasants surpassed even Hitler's grisly record of innocent victims. more...

MSM Mourns Loss of Ally in War on Bush

While the average American is celebrating news that al Qaeda in Iraq terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is dead, mainstream press reaction to the news of Zarqawi's death has been panic. The story, too big to simply ignore, endangers the carefully constructed memes of Iraq as a Vietnam-like quaqmire and President Bush and Donald Rumsfeld as ineffective leaders in the War on Terror.

In response, major news outlets are desperately trying to portray Zarqawi's death as a minor development that will have little or no effect on fighting in Iraq and the greater struggle of the War on Terror. If Zarqawi's death does have an impact, the MSM predict, it will be to increase the resolve of the terrorist insurgency.

Update: comments have been temporarily suspended while we deal with a mentally ill individual trying to vandalize the site. We apologize for the inconvenience, but point out that this incident validates our points about the Left. They are not on our side in this fight.

Newspaper Encourages Readers to Phone Conservative Letter Writer

Apparently stung by recent criticism citing a lack of balance in the selection of letters to the editor, the Syracuse Post-Standard in its Sunday edition suggested that readers telephone the conservative reader who raised the issue.

From the Editor's note (emphasis added):

A close reading of last Sunday's Feedback response would make clear that Richard Lindsay has earned his record as "most prolific" from the number of letters he writes, not the number published. Just because we say it, does that make it true? Here's more specific information: Lindsay sent us four letters dated May 26; two more dated May 27; two dated May 28; two dated May 29. And so on. Still don't believe us? Why not give him a call?
While the paper stops short of providing Lindsay's telephone number, the suggestion to call him implies that Lindsay does not have an unlisted number, and, in fact, there are two Richard Lindsays listed in the Syracuse phone book.

Apart from the accusations of editorial bias in the selection of letters (members of the Syracuse Peace Council do seem to be pretty successful at getting their visceral hatred of the President published), why Lindsay, a conservative who often disagrees with the Post-Standard's left-leaning editorial policies, is singled out for criticism for being "prolific" is a mystery. Apparently, prolific liberal letter writers are concerned citizens, while prolific conservative letter writers are cranks.

In any case, for a daily newspaper to encourage its readers to harass a man for stating his opinions is irresponsible and outrageous, and seems more driven by pique than reasoned counter-argument.

Bloggers Get Death Threat From Reuters Email Account

"I look forward to the day when you pigs get your throats cut..."
This is an excerpt from the email received by Little Green Footballs after an LGF reader posted a link to one of their posts on the Guardian's website. The Guardian article is by Inayat Bunglawala, a member of the Muslim Council of Britain and concerns the movie The DaVinci Code, specifically, the question of Christ's divinity.

The staff at LGF were surprised when the threatening email traced to a Reuters account. They were further shocked when subsequent comments by Bungalawa offered circumstantial evidence that Bungalawa himself was the author.

A Dan Rather Moment for ABC's Brian Ross?

Last night, Brian Ross led ABC's broadcast with "an ABC News exclusive" report claiming that Republican Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was now a prime target of the Justice Department probe into the dealings of lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Citing unidentified sources within the investigation, Brian Ross breathlessly reported that Hastert "is in the mix". ABC news analyst and Clintonista George Stephanopoulos declared that the story, if true, would be "seismic".

But today, ABC reports that the Justice Department has flatly denied Ross' story, and Hastert has angrily called for a retraction. The situation is eerily similar to the early stages of the Dan Rather "fake-but-accurate" scandal involving forged Texas Air National Guard documents.

Some are speculating that ABC concocted the story in an effort to draw attention away from Democratic Representative William Jefferson, who was allegedly videotaped accepting a $100,000 bribe from an undercover FBI operative.

This is not the first time that ABC News has been accused of gross political bias. A 2004 memo by ABC News Political Director Mark Halperin exhorted reporters to slant stories to John Kerry's advantage.

Bentsen Obits Point Out Shallowness of MSM

The death of Lloyd Bentsen emphasized the lowbrow mentality of mainstream journalists, with virtually every media outlet referring to a contrived soundbite Bentsen delivered during the 1988 Vice Presidential debate:

In the Oct. 5, 1988, vice presidential debate, Quayle said: “I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency.”

Bentsen’s retort in the televised event caused a sensation. “Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy,” he said. “I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy.”

By all accounts, Bentsen was an honorable man, who completed over 50 bombing missions during WWII and served three decades in public life. Unfortunately, today's media have boiled his life down to a thirty second cheapshot that Bentsen was probably ashamed of as soon as it was uttered. A pathetic epitaph indeed.

Mass Re-Enlistment Counters MSM/DNC Memes

In a story so far unreported outside of Colorado, soldiers of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, a unit that has borne the brunt of fighting and suffered heavy casualties in Iraq, participated in a mass re-enlistment ceremony last Friday.

From the Denver Post:

Fort Carson - A year ago, as Iraqi fighters detonated a bomb that shattered his convoy, Army Sgt. Gene Braxton led survivors scrambling out of their Humvees in the hot dusty haze to hunt for the triggermen.

Five months later, a bigger roadside bomb rocked the armored vehicle Braxton was in. Reeling from a concussion, he dragged a wounded buddy to safety.

Back in Colorado, Braxton has re-enlisted and will undergo parachute jump training in preparation for a possible third stint of combat duty in Iraq.

The 26-year-old is among 640 Colorado-based 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment soldiers who, in an unusually large mass re-enlistment, have extended their military service. Hundreds participated in a re-enlistment ceremony Friday, standing bolt straight on the shiny wood floor in a Fort Carson gym, raising their right hands and swearing they'd do anything to support and defend the United States.

Of course, this story can't be "real" because Brian Williams hasn't reported it on the Nightly News.

The Bloody Murder of Muslim Jouralist Atwar Bahjat

Sickening

Via The London Times Online :

Update: See Rusty here who says, "Ah young Paducan learn to trust your feelings". (Note extended entry was posted yesterday.)

Nobody but her killers knew just how much she had suffered until a film showing her death on February 22 at the hands of two musclebound men in military uniforms emerged last week. Her familyÂ’s worst fears of what might have happened have been far exceeded by the realityÂ….

...We now know that it was not that swift for Bahjat. First she was stripped to the waist, a humiliation for any woman but particularly so for a pious Muslim who concealed her hair, arms and legs from men other than her father and brother.

Then her arms were bound behind her back. A golden locket in the shape of Iraq that became her glittering trademark in front of the television cameras must have been removed at some point — it is nowhere to be seen in the grainy film, which was made by someone who pointed a mobile phone at her as she lay on a patch of earth in mortal terror.

By the time filming begins, the condemned woman has been blindfolded with a white bandage.

It is stained with blood that trickles from a wound on the left side of her head. She is moaning, although whether from the pain of what has already been done to her or from the fear of what is about to be inflicted is unclear...

...A large man dressed in military fatigues, boots and cap approaches from behind and covers her mouth with his left hand. In his right hand, he clutches a large knife with a black handle and an 8in blade. He proceeds to cut her throat from the middle, slicing from side to side.

Her cries — “Ah, ah, ah” — can be heard above the “Allahu akbar” (God is greatest) intoned by the holder of the mobile phone.

Even then, there is no quick release for Bahjat. Her executioner suddenly stands up, his job only half done. A second man in a dark T-shirt and camouflage trousers places his right khaki boot on her abdomen and pushes down hard eight times, forcing a rush of blood from her wounds as she moves her head from right to left.

Only now does the executioner return to finish the task. He hacks off her head and drops it to the ground, then picks it up again and perches it on her bare chest so that it faces the film-maker in a grotesque parody of one of her pieces to camera.

The voice of one of the Arab worldÂ’s most highly regarded and outspoken journalists has been silenced. She was 30....

...I found it hard enough to bear the news of her murder. When I saw it replayed, it was as if part of me had died with her. How much more gruelling it must have been for a close family friend who watched the film this weekend and cried when he heard her voice.

The friend, who cannot be identified, knew nothing of her beheading but had been guarding other horrifying details of BahjatÂ’s ordeal. She had nine drill holes in her right arm and 10 in her left, he said. The drill had also been applied to her legs, her navel and her right eye. One can only hope that these mutilations were made after her death.

Also see the Mudville Gazette who adds:

Regardless of which side in the conflict killed her (and I have my own thoughts on that - in the eyes of her killers her greatest crime was most likely being a woman outside of a kitchen) the London Times reporter can't resist a mild apology for their act:
Just as Bahjat bore witness to countless atrocities that she covered for her television station, Al-Arabiya, during IraqÂ’s descent into sectarian conflict, so the recording of her execution embodies the depths of the countryÂ’s depravity after three years of war.
In truth, it represents a depth of depravity achieved over centuries. From the description, her killers hadn't just conceived or improvised their method execution on the spot - they seem to have been well practiced. But such is the nature of the enemy in this war, and perhaps this is their most sacred and well honed knowledge: if a brutality can be inflicted that exceeds all human ability to comprehend, the humans will find a way to deny it
Blue Crab Boulevard says :
This is the face of evil itself. That the monsters choose to hide behind masks shows how deeply depraved and cowardly they really are. We must remember we are at war. Or that face will show itself again and again.
Robert Spencer at Jihad Watch chimes in with the following:
Anyone who thinks that God's greatness is established by such acts of barbaric cruelty must be resisted at all costs.
I want to add one thought. I know this is a horrid thing. IÂ’ve seen several of these things and they turn my stomach. I dread having the even think of it. But this video should be released as respectfully and responsibly as possible. Hard to do I know, but the public must be shown this evil. Otherwise how are they to know the truth. Also I have an all too realistic awareness of what the threat below really means. We don't want to release it but we feel we have to release it. The Jawa Report will bring you updates if and when it becomes available. Our prayers go out to Atwar Bahjat and her family.

MSM Openly Sides With Illegals

Hundreds of thousands march for immigrant rights

Most employers support rallies
Immigrant-rights boycotts concentrated in industries with mainly Latino workforces

Thousands join rally for immigrant rights

Note what all of these headlines have in common: the conflation of legal and illegal immigrants, as indicated by the phrase "immigrant rights". That phrase, as it applies to legal immigrants, is meaningless in the context of yesterday's protest activities.

Legal immigrants have specific legal rights and obligations, which are clearly spelled out in immigration regulations. Once a person becomes a US citizen, he or she is no longer an "immigrant", but a citizen of the United States of America on an equal footing with the bluest Mayflower bloodline.

By choosing to propagate this deliberate and obvious lie, the mainstream media have picked a side, and it isn't America's side.

McCarthy Leak Whitewash Continues

McCarthy Leak Defender McGovern Tied to Subversive Left
Here's how Jim Lehrer of PBS described Ray McGovern to his audience last night:

Ray McGovern was an analyst for 27 years. He retired in 1990. He is now a member of the group Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, which has criticized the current administration for politicizing intelligence.
At least Lehrer mentioned VIPS, though he didn't tell us that they are barking mooonbats calling for the President's impeachment. The media meme is that McGovern is a 27-year CIA veteran who admires McCarthy's courage...no reason to dig any deeper, nothing to see here, folks...move along. more...

ABC's Contribution to McCarthy Whitewash

As Kim Priestap, writing for Wizbang! notes, the American mainstream media are regaining their footing and circling the wagons to rally to the defense of Mary McCarthy, the CIA analyst fired for leaking information to the press.

ABC News is answering the partisan call. In a Saturday story on their website ABC manages to put together a remarkably dishonest piece of "journalism" predicting the fall of the Republic if leaking classified information remains a crime.

Not only did ABC fail to mention McCarthy's political leanings (she contributed $2000 to John Kerry's unsuccessful 2004 bid for the Presidency), there is also this:

"This a matter of principle," said Ray McGovern, a former fellow CIA analyst, "where she said my oath, my promise not to reveal secrets is superceded by my oath to defend the constitution of the U.S."
ABC leaves out the inconvenient, but telling, fact that Ray McGovern is one of the lunatic fringe who now makes his living calling for the impeachment of President Bush.

Prepare for much more dishonesty from the media, especially now that European investigators have found no trace of the CIA renditions that McCarthy whispered of to Dana Priest at the Washington Post.

CIA Officer Fired For Leaking to Media (Updated)

A CIA officer, not assigned to public relations, has admitted to passing classified, operational information to the media, specifically, the Washington Post. From Fox News:

WASHINGTON — A CIA officer has been relieved of his duty after being caught leaking classified information to the media.

One official called this a "damaging leak" that deals with operational information and said the fired officer "knowingly and willfully" leaked the information to the media and "was caught."

A second law enforcement official confirmed said the CIA officer had provided information that contributed to a Washington Post story last year saying there were secret U.S. prisons in Eastern Europe.

The CIA is expected to prosecute. Expect Leftist traitors all over the country to spring to this weasel's defense.

Via the Drudge Report.

Update: NBC News has identified Mary O. McCarthy as the CIA officer fired. Interestingly, Fundrace.org identifies a Mary O. McCarthy, with occupation listed as "Analyst" for the U.S. Government as having donated $2000 to John Kerry's 2004 Presidential campaign.
