Are a Million Spanish Protesters Newsworthy?

Apparently, it depends on what they're protesting.

Protesting a war? Newsworthy.

Protesting the Spanish government's appeasement of terrorists? Not so newsworthy.

From PubliusPundit:

Madrid has been flooded with over a million people who marched to say a sound NO to Zapatero and his appeasing policy toward [leftist terrorist group] ETA. The Spanish Prime Minister decided to open a dialogue with those who terrorized and murdered hundreds over the last decades.

This demonstration was not at all meaningless. It showed how not all of SpainÂ’s population supports their prime ministerÂ’s absurd policies. And yet, there has been a total media blackout.

However, I found tons of photos in several Spanish blogs. It fills the media vacuum!

Google News search for "spain".

For background on the ETA and Basque separatists, look here.

Thanks to LGF for the heads up.

1 Well for most of the rest of the world there is really only one newsworthy event taking place right now, and that is THE WORLD CUP Many consider it even more important than AMERICAN IDOL

2 I think there's a better reason for the American media's relative silence on this. The American media is among the most provincial, narcissistic in the world. If 700 people die in Indonesia, and 4 do in wyoming, guess which leads? The % of television news and newspaper coverage that deals with foreign affairs has been dropping since 1970, particularly foreign news that doesn't involve Americans. The first Spanish protests involved a war we started. These are internal Spanish (with a little French) affairs. Big difference.
