Alleged Terrorist is "Rosa Parks" of Muslim Community

The Washington Times runs a story today about something we reported on last Friday. Ahmed Omar Abul Ali met with Zubayr Al-Rimi, al Qaeda's #2 man in Saudi Arabia. Zubayr Al-Rimi was wanted in connection with the murders of nine Americans in Saudi Arabia before he was shot by Saudi police in a September shootout.

Meanwhile the New York Times runs an article yesterday in which Muslim-Americans compare the would-be Presidential assassin to Rosa Parks:

Our whole community is under siege," said Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, a spokesman for the Dar Al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church, where Mr. Abu Ali and his family worshiped. "They don't see this as a case of criminality. They see it as a civil rights case. As a frontal attack on their community."...

"The feeling I get here on a daily basis must be what it was like to be a member of Martin Luther King Jr.'s church following the case of Rosa Parks," said Imam Abdul-Malik. "People always ask, 'What is the latest from the courthouse?' "

Even as Mr. Ali's parents feign that their son couldn't be a terrorist, the article also goes on to describe the mosque attended by the family as Wahhabi. Nope, never heard of a pious Wahhabi wanting to kill Americans or anything.

Zarqawi Planning Attack in US

Fox News is reporting that intercepted communications between Osama bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi indicate that Zarqawi has been urged to focus his efforts on attacking the US. The report also indicates Zarqawi may also be on the verge of getting caught and that this strategy might come because of increased pressure in Iraq. (ht: Ace of Spades)

UPDATE: More from USA Today which doesn't name Zarqawi, but which alludes to it when it says:

"A U.S. counterterrorism official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the "very vague" information alluded to moving forward on planning for operations outside of Iraq.
Meaning, al Qaeda is part of the planning of operations in Iraq now. Meanwhile Zarqawi's group has claimed several attacks ain Iraq over the past few days. Notice how fewer and fewer of these attacks are aimed at Americans?

American Hostage Rescued in Iraq (and it's a child!)

The terrorists have resorted to holding children hostage. This is the only information I could gather about Hussein al Saadi. How many more American hostages are there in Iraq? From the AP:

US citizen Hussein al-Saadi, 10, who was kidnapped for a ransom of 150,000 US dollars two weeks ago, is kissed by his father Saadi Abdul-Aziz as they are reunited in the southern town of Basra in Iraq Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, after he was rescued by the Iraqi police who raided the kidnapper's hideout.

Online Jihadis Using Jewish Names

I was beginning to wonder why the majority of my hate-mail and death threats were coming from some guy named Goldstein. From SITE:

A popular jihadi message board, affiliated with al-Qaeda, had provided “how-to” information on “penetrating Jewish email addresses”. The author of this posting instructed members to use Jewish-sounding names and Western, including Israeli, domain addresses when registering for free email accounts such as Hotmail.com and Yahoo.com. The author also provided examples of such possible names and addresses.

Anti-Syrian Forces in Lebanon Win!

Wow, it's like a neo-cons wet dream come true. AP:

With shouts of "Syria out!," more than 25,000 flag-waving protesters massed outside Parliament today in a dramatic display of defiance that swept out Lebanon's pro-Syrian government two weeks after the assassination of a former prime minister.

Cheering broke out among the demonstrators in Martyrs' Square when they heard Prime Minister Omar Karami's announcement on loudspeakers that the government was stepping down. Throughout the day, protesters handed out red roses to soldiers and police.

Putin Wonders Why Bush Fired Dan Rather

One of the interesting things about foreign governments is that they think we do things in the US just like they do. For instance, when President George W. Bush was elected the natural reaction of many in the world was to write this off as dynastic succession. After all, that is the way things are done in their country.

Time:

But when Bush talked about the Kremlin's crackdown on the media and explained that democracies require a free press, the Russian leader gave a rebuttal that left the President nonplussed. If the press was so free in the U.S., Putin asked, then why had those reporters at CBS lost their jobs? Bush was openmouthed. "Putin thought we'd fired Dan Rather," says a senior Administration official. "It was like something out of 1984."

The Russians did not let the matter drop. Later, during the leaders' joint press conference, one of the questioners Putin called on asked Bush about the very same firings, a coincidence the White House assumed had been orchestrated. The odd episode reinforced the Administration's view that Putin's impressions of America are often based on urban myths fed to him by ill-informed aides.

Hat tip Confederate Yankee who wonders if it was Oliver Willis who is advising Putin.

Terrorists Behead Another Woman; second beheading victim this week and third woman

Iraqi police found the beheaded body of a woman in Baghdad's al Adl district today. The woman was the second beheading victim in the past week. This also marks the third time in a week a woman had been murdered in Iraq, apparently for 'collaboration'.

Various news sources, including al Jazeera, report that the woman was dressed in black, her body wrapped in a carpet. A note attached to the corpse simply read: "Spy".

It is quite common for Islamic terrorists to accuse their victims of being a spy or collaborator. Hostages are often forced to make confessions before their captors murder them--whether they are beheaded or shot. Usually, working in any capacity with the Iraqi government is enough to convince terrorist forces that a person is a spy. [hat tip: Paul at Wizbang who e-mailed this to me] more...

Mass Murder by Terrorists in Iraq Kills 100+

The latest estimate of the car-bombing mass murder in Hilla Iraq is 110. The number climbs with each new report. The mass murders continue in Iraq as a result of the combination of Islamist rhetoric against the 'Crusader Forces' and the Leftist media reinforcing the Americans as agressors and brutal occupiers. The terrorist murderers justify such homicide bombings as legitimate resistance to occupation and their targets as collaborators.

NDTV:

A massive car bomb blast killed over 110 people and wounded as many as 130 in the central Iraqi town of Hilla.

The attack is being described as the single deadliest in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

The explosion took place when a suicide car bomber drove into a crowd of people who had lined up to outside a medical centre to get their medical certificates required for government jobs.

Hundreds of people were ferried to the hospital and many of the injured are reported to be in a serious condition.

Devastated scene of crime

The number of dead and injured is particularly high because there was also a crowded market place nearby.

Several shops and parked cars were also destroyed in Hilla, which is located 95 kilometres south of capital Baghdad.

It's primarily a Shia town, and the blast comes at a time when Iraqi groups are holding talks to form a new Shia-dominated government following last month's historic general elections.

Florida Judge Orders Pope Removed from Life Support*

Clearwater, Fla. In a shocking development in the Terri Schiavo case today, a Florida appeals court ordered Vatican doctors to remove all life support from the ailing Pope John Paul II.

In a decision sure to have international repercussions, Judge George Greer ruled that although Terri Schiavo's lawyers had provided substantial evidence that the Pontiff responded to external stimuli by doing such things as "eating, talking, praying, and blessing the faithful," that such behaviors were simple auto-responses that in no way proved any type of self-awareness. Despite plans to attend Sunday prayers tomorrow, the judge proclaimed the Pope to be in a "constant vegetative state".

"We understand and sympathize with the feelings that Catholics, Christians, and humanitarians of all stripes have for the Holy Father," Judge Greer announced from the bench, "but this is a nation of laws. As such we must not let any moral considerations, whatever their source may be, interfere with justice."

The judges order would require doctors at Rome's Gemelli hospital to withhold all medical care from the Pope, including food & water and strapping the Pope down if he reflexively objects that he is hungry and/or thirsty. However, the Court's order will not take affect until March 18th allowing time for the case to be appealed.

"We will appeal the case all the way to the Supreme Court," Terri Schiavo lawyer David Gibbs III said in a press conference immediately following the unexpected ruling.

NARAL, the ACLU, and attorney's for Michael Schiavo, Terri's husband, have already begun work on amicus curae briefs in support of the judges decision to euthenize the Pope. "The right to die is an essential aspect of human dignity," said George Felos, Michael Schiavo's attorney and spokesman, "and the right to kill those who no longer have any value and are a drain on the economy is unseperable from this right."

"The legal principle of convenience," he added, "has triumphed today over the arcane remnants of religious bigotry which threaten to shake the very foundations of our secular society had the judge not ruled in our favor."

Reactions from the Vatican were swift. An emergency meeting was called for all available ranking Church officials and thousands gathered for a candle-light vigil in Saint Peter's Square. A spokesperson for the Papal state immediately denounced the ruling as contrary to the teachings of the Church and said the Vatican would join the appeal to judge Greer's ruling.

Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick of the Archdiocese of Washington, DC strongly condemned the ruling. When asked what the Church would do if John Paul were to lose the appeal, McCarrick said, "As Catholics we believe that preserving the sanctity of life is the first duty of governments and of individual followers of Christ."

"What judge Greer has done today is essentially to sanction the murder of the Holy See," he went on, "and we cannot and will not stand for this! We must protect the life of the innocent at all costs--even if that means a non-violent protest or fast of some kind. Maybe even a prayer vigil--a long one. I really hope that works."

Today's ruling came as a shock to many legal experts who claimed that the Pope had no standing in the Schiavo case and the court no authority to make the ruling. Even so, Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe announced his support of the decision as the logical extension of the application of internationl law in the US.

"Besides," said Tribe, "the guy is really old."

The Pope is expected to make a statement about the case tomorrow.

Is American Hostage in Iraq Keith Maupin Alive?

Let's hope so. Keith Maupin is the only American serviceman still considered 'captured' by the Army. A video was released shortly after he was taken hostage showing a man being executed. However, the video was of very poor quality and the Army has not been able to confirm the victim on the video was Maupin.

Let's not forget that there are at least four other Americans hostages in Iraq: Roy Hallums, Dean Sadek, Tim Bell, and Bill Bradley. We urge our troops in Iraq to continue the search for their comrades. The fight will not be over until all American civilians held hostage come home. Roy Hallums and Dean Sadek are known to be alive as both were shown in videos pleading for their lives. Tim Bell and Bill Bradley's fate are unknown.

Cincinnati Enquirer:

For Keith and Carolyn Maupin, there can be no closure as long as their son remains missing....

Throughout Greater Cincinnati, and particularly near his home in Clermont County, yellow ribbons adorn trees, cars and mailboxes as reminders of Matt Maupin. In August, the Maupin family said they had received 10,000 letters of support from around the country, sometimes 500 a day. A store in Batavia reported selling out of yellow ribbon. There have been rallies, vigils and calls from President Bush.

The memories of Maupin are not of a soldier, but of a young man working to build a life. He graduated from Glen Este High School and enrolled at University of Cincinnati's Clermont College. He joined the reserves to help pay for school. And then his unit was called up and life changed for him, as it has for so many other young men and women in the past few years...

Their concern remains our concern. Their son is our neighbor. He represents the sons and daughters of all our neighbors who are serving their country.

This community has shown its heart to the Maupin family and will continue to do so. We will help them maintain their vigil. This community's watch will remain until Matt Maupin finally comes home.

Hizbullah Bombs Tel Aviv Nightclub

The group that the European Union recently claimed 'is not a terrorist organization' is responsible for tonight's bombing of a Tel Aviv nightclub which killed at least four and injured scores more. The Jerusalem Post and the AP report that a senior Palestinian security official lays the blame for the bombing sqarely on the shoulders of the Lebanese based Hizbullah.

While the individual who carried out the suicide attack was a leader of the al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade in the West Bank town of Tulkarm, the PA denies that the military branch of Yassir Arafat's Fatah movement had anything to do with the attack. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the Palestinian official claims that Hizbullah recruited and paid for the homicide mission.

Other media reports that factions within the al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade and Islamic Jihad claimed joint responsibility for the attack, but leaders of al Aqsa later denied involvement. The Associated Press also speculates that certain cells within al Aqsa are receiving money and orders from Hizbullah. If that is the case, than the Palestinian Authority's ability to control militants within its ranks may be severely limited.

Hizbullah has recently made threats against leaders in the anti-Syrian uprising in Lebanon. Syria has occupied Lebanon for over a decade and allowed Hizbullah freedom to launch attacks against Israel from Lebanese territory. Hizbullah is a recognized political party in Lebanon with strong ties to both Syria and Iran.

Despite Hizbullah's known connection to the murder of American soldiers and Israeli civilians, the European Union has been reluctant to formally declare the group a terrorist organization.

Leaders of Hizbullah in Lebanon have disclaimed the attacks calling the accusation that they were behind the mass murder "lies."

Initial reports from Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas are encouraging. The NY Times quotes Abbas as saying, "The Palestinian Authority will not stand silent in the face of this act of sabotage. We will follow and track down those responsible and they will be punished accordingly."

The J Post reports this from the scene of the mass murder:

About 20 to 30 people queued up outside the "Stage" club on the generally packed Herbert Samuel Boulevard shortly after 11 pm Friday night when the bomber, dressed as a reveler himself, struck. As he reached the front of the line he detonated a nail-packed device just before being searched by one of the club's guards. The force of the blast ripped cars open like cans, and sprayed the victims' blood onto the club's smashed front fa ade. Shops and windows of nearby buildings were obliterated.

Regular readers know why I blog anonymously. I would like to keep things that way. Here's what I need to do, but don't know how to do it.

a) set up a pay-pal and amazon honor account, but do it in such a way that would protect my privacy. I don't even want my city to be seen by those donating. Yes, I'm that paranoid.

b) get a blog ads thingy going. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to start with blog ads.

All this because I want a little bit of that crazy blog money I keep hearing about!

Founder of anti-Iraq War Movement in Britan Now Pro-War

Harry Barnes, a Member of Parliament and one of the founders of Labour Against the War has defected. It seems the Iraq War was worth it after all. Times Online:

An MP who was a founder member of Labour Against the War has quit the group, saying that after last monthÂ’s elections in Iraq he now believed Allied troops should remain in the country, it emerged today....

The North-East Derbyshire MP, who is stepping down at the election, accused his former colleagues in the anti-war movement of retailing "simple-minded" claims about the extent of civilian casualties in Iraq since the war....

He could no longer support the anti-war campÂ’s demands for withdrawal of troops of the US-led coalition, which he said should be a decision for the Iraqi people....

Mr Barnes accused the anti-war movement of offering a "one-sided" view of life in Iraq, endlessly repeating the 100,000 casualty estimate produced in an analysis of deaths caused by the conflict, published in the academic journal The Lancet.

"That analysis said it could be anything between 2,000 and 198,000," he said. "Some things are just over-the-top and simple-minded."

Thanks for the tip from Dr. Leopold Stotch via e-mail.
