Rusty is back. Chicago was great. Thanks to all for covering for me while I was busy rubbing elbows with other political scientists, eating pizza, re-enacting scenes from The Untouchables, and hanging out at the Art Institute. Good times, all around.

At the MPSA I attended a panel of political scientists who blog. When I said my name was "Rusty Shackleford" they just looked at me like "so what?" Which was odd, because I had thought pretty much every one knew about The Jawa. If my plans for world domination are to ever come to fruition, I'm going to have to start working harder here. Much harder. Also, if any one has a spare monkey's paw, that might also help.

I have several hundred e-mails to answer. It might be a few days until blogging is back to normal.

An update on the Hilton Hotel corporation failure to make help make new arrangements for a group of disabled veterans about to be displaced by a remodeling. If you do help out these vets I think It would be a very nice gustier if Paris and Nikki came down and helped feed a few vets. Also it would be nice if they came by our place in bikinis and personally thanked Howie & 8ackgr0und N015e for pointing out the errors of their ways with a big smooch on the cheek for each of us. Then take us out to party. IÂ’m old and there is not much party left in me but IÂ’ll try.

8 Yeah but this is background noises crusade this week. Ive been lucky enough to go with grandpa to some reunions with his buddies and It's pretty amazing the relationsships vets have. Now of course background and I are opposites as far as politics. But....If you are left and against the war it's unfair to saddle the soldier with the politics fo the war. They serve. If Hilton Hotels is just being cheap an inconsiderate that's not very good business. There is a lot of politics in business. So you pretty much hve to include Paris and her sister cause well you now. The general aim I have is to just bring a bit of attention in hopes that they will make some kind of arrangement to help these guys out. I don't really care what just do something nice. I's sure Hilton if they wanted to could help make plans for so these guys an continue to meet somewhere. From my experience it means a lot to vets to get together. All I ask. Background is still all wound up on this one so I will update tomorrow with newinfo he sent. See how this works. Background has an issue I can kind of see the point of. He sends me stuff and we tried to work out what we agree on and go from there. To me that's what blogs are for. Probably we won't have any luck as by now it's obvious Paris (or Hilton Hotels) does not read The Jawa Report. Making money is all good but you also need to have good will toward your business. Some times you have to invest a bit in that too. Note this is an issue a reader brought to us. I encourge similar participation from our regulars and readers left and right. This blog leans right but so what. Be American first. I like for our men and women who have given so much to be treated well.

Now is the time for anyone interested in supporting the troops who really need it most, to join up for Operation Perish Hilton (tip of the hat to Chris Dickson for the name....brilliant) Here are just some of the things we can do. It is time to boycott the following hotel chains: Conrad Hotels Doubletree Embassy Suites Hampton Inn Hampton Inn & Suites Hilton Garden Inn Homewood Suites Scandic Another way to show support is for people who do travel to pick up the stationary from their hotel room and write a letter to Hilton corporate headquarters, the local newspapers, TV and radio stations saying: "I'm sending you this note from [non Hilton property] to let you know I think the way Hilton Hotel Corp. is treating the people and patrons at Fran O'Brien's Steak House in Washington DC is wrong. I chose to stay at [non Hilton property] because I support our troops. I simply can't get a good night's sleep at a Hilton property as long as they turn their back on severely wounded soldiers."

I dunno why fear that if they appear soft they will have to do way more. But their interet is keeping the best and they have to work on it. Several high level engineers who taught this associates degree their engineering skills have left. We workk your ass off and we have to but we also need to be responsive enoug to keep those we with to keep. It's a deliate balance. so conservatives often come off harsher than they really are. Now for the Democrats what bothers me and I'm a swing voter is the fact thay have become the party of inti this anti that. Progressive they call it. Ok to me the Democratic party is supposed to be about fighting for freedonm for all. In fact that's also a Republican value. So let's call it an American value. If you realy really think Bush is just fighting for greed then go meet up with abu muscab al zaqueery and talk him into peace. It's not going to work. The democratic leaders have pulled the leftish away from the roots of thier party. The Rerpubicans have sold it's small government lank of the platform out. Libertarian party just doent'have the pull. So i propose a new party the "I'm A Real American Dammit Party." The baisic idea is that there is a sliver of way too nutty conservatives who want to tell everyone what right is. There is the nutty moonbat wing of the Democratic prty who sells out America and freedom just to attack Bush becuase well he gets to fight for freedom and we cant' stand it. I was annoyed at myself for feeling paranoid. I was the one who had earlier said We can hitchhike in Northern Iraq.

A half-hour later our driver took us back on the main road at a Peshmerga checkpoint. He turned the car toward the mountains, toward Dohok. Not toward the plains. Not toward the dangerous red zone and Mosul.

"I guess that was a shortcut," Sean said.

I guess so," I said. "He's fine. We're fine."

In case I'm incoherent, my main point is not that Jill Carroll was a saint or that she wasn't against the war, but only that she was a victim. Hostages are the victim and terrorists are the bad guys. In the middle of a crime, one does not attack the victim, you go after the criminal. That's all.

UPDATE: So, during the break, Schlussel says she doesn't want to talk with me and that had she known I was going to confront her that she wouldn't have agreed to the interview. She also had the audacity to call me a "nut". Me. The nut. Right Debbie, right. I'm a "nut" for saying it's not good manners to attack a woman who is being held hostage. You, on the other hand, are the voice of reason.

I won't be on. The offer was retracted after Schlussel threw a fit. I'm not blaming Ace or Goldstein. They were just trying to be good hosts and have some class since Debbie Schlussel was the original guest & I was kind of an afterthought.

For dropping a Patrick Swayze reference into an e-mail conversation we just had. Now that, my friend, is out of bounds. No need to bring Patrick Swayze into the conversation.

The real problem we (and there are a lot people in that we) have with Schlussel is that when some of us pointed out that we disagreed with her, she responded by leaving some pretty inflammatory comments on our blogs. Then, after some of us called her on it, she played the part of victim.

See how that works, you leave nasty comments on our blogs, and then we we say nasty things back and you claim to be the victim.

And it's not just a few people. This has happened over and over again with Debbie who has either left nasty comments or written fairly nasty e-mails.

Now, she claims that she was really trying to point out that the Left supported Jill Carroll because she was one of them--a form of hypocrisy. Fair enough, and true enough, but in the process she also claimed Jill Carroll wasn't faking it when her terrorist captors forces her to say the most vile things about America. That, I think, is just stupid and, to be fair to Debbie, something I might have said at one time--and in fact, have said. But since I've actually been in contact with the families of hostages, since it's become somewhat of my cause, I've decided that such criticisms are usually out of bounds.

Again, my problem was in Debbie's reading of Jill Carroll's motivations, not in pointing out the dispicable way in which the Left often vocally supports the release of Leftist hostages but are silent when the hostage has no connection to the anti-war movement. But that's just the point: we should be against hostage taking because it is a barbaric practice, not be vocal only when it suits our political agenda.

Seriously, and I do mean to brag a bit, if you want to know anything about hostages in Iraq, this is the place and I am the go-to guy in the blogosphere. Check out our hostage archives for some evidence.

So, it's not that I disagree with Schlussel--I think you'll find I linked to her several times in the past, all positive--it's just that I (shall I say we?) don't like Schlussel.

Thanks again to Ace for offering to have me on the show next week. I dunno, though. I'm just not sure that Schlussel and myself have a real bone to pick and the only reason this has escalated the way it has is because some people are rather thin-skinnied, an attribute not well suited to the blogosphere.

5 Rusty, you are in good company. Debbie has threatened to call the FBI on me, she threatened Misha with a lawsuit and just out and out insulted my husband, John Donovan. You are absolutely right about being kind to a victim - I was disappointed in Jeff and Ace - they both seemed to be saying that everything Debbie writes is okay with them.

6 In this battle, you are on the side of the angels. She's someone who believes that death is all too good for someone who criticizes Israel in any way. You are, I believe, a very very strong supporter of Israel who just thinks that no one taken by terrorists should be judged worthy of death, or unworthy of rescue, or unworthy, at the least, of our sympathy, and our restraint from mockery. Incidentally, a recent column of hers has a howler of an error--she says that JFK voted against the Civil Rights Act...uh...no way.

14 I believe that was my point, Jesus land joe. Although, there were civil rights acts in 1957 and 1960. JFK voted for both. What she may be thinking of is that in 57 JFK was part of a key group of liberal and moderate northerners who voted with the South on the jury trial amendment to the 57 CRA. To many liberals, that defanged the act, since at the time, no southern jury would convict a white man, regardless of the evidence, of a crime against black voting rights or civil rights. But JFK ultimately voted for the 57 CRA, so she's still dead wrong. I'm sure she will correct the error soon....

Thanks, once again, to those who offered their condolences at the passing of my friend. The funeral was held yesterday and I had the privilege of speaking at it. My friend was so beloved by all that the 700 seat auditorium that we rented for it was too small to hold all the mourners. It was standing room only.

While I'm thinking about it, let me personally thank the minister of the First Baptist Church for denying our request to use his enormous church because our faith wasn't 'Christian' enough for him. Oh, and thanks for instructing your A/V people who volunteered to help out with the funeral, to edit out those parts of the slideshow homage of my friend which weren't orthodox enough for you. That's really classy.

Anyway, the whole tragedy has given me a renewed perspective on things that matter.

Let me publicly apologize for offenses given or taken on this blog. I'll try to be slower to dish it out in the future, and think things through before writing.

Anyway, it's back to the grind for me.
