Senior Zarqawi Aide Captured
The Iraqi government
announced that Fadil Hussain Ahmed al-Kurdi, 26, a senior member of the Al Qaeda-linked network of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was captured in a raid in Baghdad along with two other terrorists. Kurdi, AKA Ridha, is the brother of Umar Baziyani, a Zarqawi lieutenant captured last May.
"Ridha was responsible for facilitating communications between Al Qaeda and the Zarqawi terror networks as well as coordinating the movement of terrorists in and out of Iraq," a Government statement said.
"Both Ridha and Umar Baziyani remain in detention and are being question [sic] by Iraqi and coalition forces."
It's also being reported that a Yemeni close to Osama bin Laden was one of seven militants killed in Wednesday's shootout with Saudi security forces in Riyadh. According to a security source,
"Ibrahim Ahmad Abdel Majeed al-Reemy, a Yemeni national, was among the seven militants killed on Wednesday evening," the source said.
Reemy, who does not figure on the Saudi kingdom's most-wanted list, is a "big shot in Al-Qaeda and is believed to be the link between the organisation in Saudi Arabia and bin Laden himself," the source said.
Splendid!

Splendid? Oh, I can think of better words than that. I think all the extremist islamists from all over the world should show up for a get together somewhere unimportant so we can get them all at the same friggin time and end this bullshit forever.

New Iraq Signs First Oil Contract
According to this
Sydney Morning Herald report, the Iraqi Oil Ministry has awarded a contract, the first since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime, to develop the Kormale Dome oil field in the northern province of Irbil. Oil Ministry spokesman Assim Jihad said the contract was a $136 million joint venture agreement among three companies, the Kar Company of Iraq, Turkey's Avrasya, and Britain-based Dynamic Processing Solutions. Kormale Dome is expected to produce 100,000 barrels of oil and 100 million cubic meters of gas per day.
To address the frequent terrorist attacks on pipelines and other facilities, spokesman Jihad said the Ministry would soon open bidding for contracts to provide security services. Naturally, these developments are good news and it's interesting that security is going to be contracted out. Rather than have the government provide security, the Ministry appears to prefer a rental guard force. The relative effectiveness of a private security force will surely be scrutinized.

North Korea has many soldiers who would be glad to work in another country. If they are as good as the ROCs were in Viet Nam they could do the job. Plus being commies they are religion free.

The war is already over, the USA has lost. Get over it and support your troops for real and bring them home before more US boys die. You really think the US will be able to build an occupation governemnt beholden to intl corproate oil interests while maintaining legitimacy in eyes of the Iraqi people? Good Luck!
When "support your troops" means "i cant question authority" this does not constitute a virtuous act. 1300+ US troops dead...100,000 Iraqis dead....no end in sight...and not for their oil or strategic interests in the geopolitics of realism.

From the horror of the cataclysm in and around the Indian Ocean, one great truth emerges: that, when the chips are down, man still cares for man, regardless of his creed and colour.
What though of the future, after the media spotlight has moved on?
In May 1946, Einstein warned that "the unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophe". Today reports that the energy released by the Boxing Day earthquake would have been equivalent to more than 190 million tons of TNT, that Sumatra is thought to have moved by as much as 120ft, and the Earth to have shifted on its axis.
Surely these prodigious events should cause us to examine our way of thinking every bit as deeply.
This catastrophe must not be allowed to be a nine, or even a ninety-day wonder. Not only should the plight of the millions made homeless and of local economies destroyed be kept in mind until normality is restored, but nations, particularly the richer ones, should keep in mind in fair times as well as in foul the mutual responsibilities attached to the brother-hood of man.
What greater reminder could we have been given of the fragility of the planet which is home to all of us.

Tsunami Help - why,how, when & where ?
We all are aware of the havoc created by Tsunami in coastal regions of South Asia spilling over to southern and Island states of our country. Thousands of families have been disaster struck, many swept away by tidal waves and untraceable, the survivors battling for life and survival while being completely awestricken and completely defenseless.
While we can not replace what they have lost but we can certainly make our small human endeavor by attending to their most urgent and pressing immediate need and contribute our might to collectively help bring down the miseries.
We are interested in finding some credible inviduals/organisation(s) with whom we could partner with whom possibilities could be explored for long term rehabilitation of orphan children/effected commmunities.
The need to coordinate efforts is the most important FACTOR. Thats why we are planning to organise a get together of all the volunteers at different dates and different locations in INDIA, SRI LANKA, THAILAND and INDONESIA.The proposed get togethers at a location will help in proper coordination and formation of teams to implement rescue n recovery operations startegically.
All volunteers and co-operative people and organizations are warmly welcome to join us.

TRAUMA OF TSUNAMI
I am Dayananda Nanayakkara 49 years of age a father of 02 children. I am a fisherman by profession.
I spent my life time in the Southern costal belt in Sri Lanka very close to “Seenigama Devalaya” a well known sacred place. The sea was blessing for our lives. Our livelihood had been depending on the sea. Until the Tsunami Tidal waves reached and destroyed our area, we loved to the sea. I also underwent to the trauma of this disaster in different ways.
I lost everything by Tsunami. Those tidal waves washed away not only my home and belongings but also my fishing boat. It had been broken into two. It was only livelihood for my whole family.
When the Tidal waves reached to the shore I was traveling to the Sunday fair with my wife. Luckily both of us survived our life struggling with waves but we were severely injured. But my father was died and the death body also not found.
Today I am desperate life with my two sons & wife in a very small tent with very very limited facilities. Today we have nothing and nothing to do, because my only livelihood had been destroyed by Tsunami. So my younger son still is studying, I have to face very big financial difficulties spending for his higher studies. Although my elder son is doing small job, it is not enough for others.
Hence, we are belonging to proposed buffer zone (100 m), we have still not been received any relief from the Government or any Non- governmental organizations. Although I am willing to start my livelihood, I have no proper background. I have no money to purchase a boat and accessories for it. Until today I have not been facilitated to start our livelihood from the government as promised.
I believe anyone who read this episode can understand my present situation. Those wish to help me to regain my life & my family, I would be much grateful to him / her.
Dayananda.
Please contact me on undermentioned address.

Laser Directed at Airliner Cockpit
(Cleveland, Ohio) Using a sophisticated laser system, someone
targeted the cockpit of an airplane on approach to Cleveland-Hopkins Airport. The flight originated Monday in Washington, D.C., and was traveling at 300MPH at 8,500 to 10,000 feet when the beam of green light invaded the cockpit. The laser is believed to have come from suburban Warrensville Heights. The FBI and the FAA are investigating. At present, it's unknown whether the incident was a prank or something more sinister.

Amen brother Lfit, The windows are on top of the plane.. you cant see in the cockpit when your standing on the ground next to the airplane.. let alone from 10000 ft. This sounds fishy.

"Using a sophisticated LASER system"
The english language and its euphamisim's so eloquently used by our government. Are this idoits listening to the BS they are talking. Having flown planes for most of my life and working on them every day I have never heard this kind of BS in my life. I have a very useful system to counter a "sophisticated LASER system" attack:
LIFT YOU DAMN HAND AND SHEILD YOUR EYES WHILE YOU BRINGING HER IN ON IFR!

You folks don't understand.. there have been a number of cases of pilot's eyes being damaged by high power lasers being pointed into the cockpit.
Yes, they windows are on top. Does that mean that you cannot see the ground? Duh!!
I am a pilot and I can tell you the USAF takes this kind of thing very seriously.

Damn You Glenn Reynolds!!!!
The Jawa Report got it's first Instalanche!! Maybe I should stay on vacation, like, forever? After begging Reynolds for a link for about 9 months I gave up on him. But he finally, of his own free will, links to this
old post on Johnny Ramone. Why does this piss me off? Well, after I hit number 33 in the Ecosystem (granted the Ecosystem was screwed up at the time) I made it my goal to be the first Mortal Human to never get an Instalanche. Now Reynolds has to drop a link and take away my last ounce of dignity.
Reynoooolds!! (screamed out loud, eyes to heaven, think "Khaaaan!!")
Anyway, still on vacation. Limited access to the internet. Chad is doing excellent work banging away at the keys while I'm gone. Thanks for keeping us all informed man.

Baking Powder?
I just realized that despite the fact that Dr. Shackleford, eminent professor of stuff and blogperson extraordinaire, invited me to guest blog on his, uh, blog - he has not actually blogrolled my blog,
The Ministry of Minor Perfidy. This is insupportable, intolerable and generally generally speaking, ungood.
What blog blatantly stole its name from an obscure comment once made by Lileks? The Ministry of Minor Perfidy.
What blog is in the forefront of warning the world about the dangers of giant fighting space robots? The Ministry of Minor Perfidy.
What blog regularly offers minute analysis of the music industry, space exploration, and tax policy? The Ministry of Minor Perfidy.
I think I hit my quota for over the top blog self-promotion, even though Rusty said I could promote my blog until my eyes bled. (I'm paraphrasing, of course. And he did use the word trust several times in that paragraph. I wonder what he meant by that?)

Out of Touch with Reality
This type of post would normally just appear on my site, however since Rusty gave me the keys to the grail, I'll use them to discuss this issue with his readers.
Numerous times on my site I've argued where some in the Left are out of touch with reality. Naturally this has led to many "courteous" emails from those I've offended, however there have now been two stories in prominent magazines (Time and Newsweek) with Lefty blogger Wonkette and "Conservative" blogger Andrew Sullivan that demonstrate how some are out of touch with reality.
Newsweek interviewed blogger Wonkette who seems to be a rising star in the blogoshpere for reasons beyond me. According to her own words from her few television appearences, she sees herself as a satirist and not a blogger. Fair enough, but I have a few words of advice for Wonkette following this brief excerpt from the interview (via Michelle Malkin).
What did you think of the bloggers' role in the Dan Rather affair?
I think they did a disservice to the debate because they made the debate about the documents and not about the president of the United States. There was another half to that story that had to do with verifiable events of what Bush may have been up to.
I thought it was Dan Rather and the entire CBS news crew who did a disservice to the American people by showing fake documents and passing them off as legit? You see, to people like Wonkette any attack a Liberal organization makes on a Conservative is legitimate regardless of having any facts behind it.
I need not re-hash Rathergate as it's been glorified for much too long, however the overall impact Rathergate had on news and American's view on the news has been drastic. The issue Wonkette would rather steer the political debate on was an old, tired out issue that has been debunked numerous times in the past; much like finding an intelligent brain cell inside of Wonkette's rather large noggin.
For further commentary on Wonkette, visit The American Mind
The second instance of a "Lefty" blogger being out of touch with reality is Andrew Sullivan. Now Sullivan calls himself a Conservative and does have many Conservative views, however his repeated mentions of Gay Marriage and his consistent attacks on Conservatives on this issue has led him out of the closet of Liberalism.
Sullivan writes a piece in Time Magazine calling 2004 The Year of the Insurgents (via Wizbang). One could argue whether this type of recognition has any merit, however that is not the reason for this post. Why would any American name a year after those that are killing our young men in women who are more brave, more dedicated to our freedoms and more dedicated to the freedoms of all of God's creatures than any one of us?
Perhaps the most interesting part of Sullivan's article is his close:
Did anyone win? Well, the President did. But the insurgency against him — fanatically deadly in Iraq, peacefully feisty at home — merely took a deep breath. And fought on.
While I've made many links to a few of the Liberal's catchphrases and actions as to supporting terrorism, Sullivan does it all and even justifies it with this one statement. Doesn't Sullivan just seem to want the terrorists to win? If not, it sure appears so.

"Newsweek interviewed blogger Wonkette who seems to be a rising star in the blogoshpere for reasons beyond me."
Let me help: she is a hot chick who writes some racey shit is a liberal blog. Same goes for Ann Coulter, except she swings from the right.

While I disagree with calling Wonkette "hot," I do see your reasoning and whole heartedly agree. I must admit however seeing her on television a few times and hearing her comments embarasses me to be a fellow blogger. A giggly little girl is not representative of 99.9% of the bloggers. Coulter has never done this to me, however I have been ashamed at the methods she uses to attack Liberals.

Yes, and Pamela Anderson is making money being a Skank (come to think of it, so is Wonkette). I still wouldn't touch her without donning a CDC clean suit.

At least Mr. K was gracious enough to say that Rusty and the rest of us are *mostly* dorky white guys. I can't escape the white guy thing, but I will go on believing that I am not, in fact, dorky.
Wonkette, I think, jumped the shark on the washingtonienne story. There, all in one convenient package, was everything that Wonkette looked for in a news scandal. That that skanky story so well suited her really cast a sharp light on her value as a commentator on world events.

Heh. Mr. K, against my better judgement I shall respond to your assumption that most of Rusty's friends are "dorky white guys." For the sake of not getting into an argument reminiscent of high school, let's just assume all of Rusty's friends are dorky. Do all dorky white guys only find dorky women hot while not finding other women attractive?
I'm just a bit perplexed at why this was even included in your argument. In something that I thought would be a funny conversation turned into a popularity contest of some sorts. I'm sorry, but how lame is that?

Brian B, Buckethead, et.al. my point is that it is all about money. There are lots of dorky white guys who spout out liberal or right wing nonsense. But add a little sex and it sells.
And Beth, why be offended about any comparisons you see written on a comments section of a weblog anywhere? Why be offended about anything you read on the internet? Here is a good comparison for you: you could scoop the brains out of Ann Coulter and swap them with Wankerette's so they traded ideologies and spouted the other's nonsense instead and they'd both have the same notoriety.
In other words, if they were ugly, I think the world would be ignoring them both.
...and I guess dorky is in the eye of the beholder too.

People who disagree with you on issues, political or otherwise, do not deserve to be judged and portrayed as delusional, and to have their opinions distorted and attacked in such terms relentlessly, in the service of your view of the world. Treating people that way for disagreeing with you is evidence of a bankrupt imagination, among other vices, because it is so utterly prosaic; for every supposed "nut" you find on the left, someone can name one for you on the right.
You're engaging in sophistry. Instead, since most people on the left and right are sane enough, let's argue about meaningful distinctions.

let's see: "delusional"; that would be stepping over the clearly malevolent use of forged documents to revive a debunked argument and smear a sitting president weeks before an election, then remonstrating with those who object by saying that the focus should remain on what was originally targeted by the fraudulent framers of the discourse - that stupid, mean president. see also describing islamofascists as "insurgents" and aligning them with the liberal faction in America.
for some reason known only to the oracle that is Marc Lawrence, no one should be portrayed that way, regardless of its veracity. because it would be judgmental, and therefore wrong. and clearly explicating your case as you did is being relentless, Chad, so stop that too. and don't forget that since the landscape is dotted with "supposed 'nuts,'" you clearly have a "bankrupt imagination, among other vices". which, since you are being ploddingly logical, must be some kind of "sophistry".
fun with words! that's what blogging is! and don't forget to check out Marc's amazing site. but don't bother with your pernicious and pedantic comments. he apparently doesn't allow them. he's exercising
his right to free speech, there and here, the kind which Wonkette and Sully would heartily encourage. we should be thankful for the lessons Marc and his ilk deign to teach us.

Wonkett is not a rising star in the blogshpere. That star rose in June and has disappeared since. NEWSWEEK hates blogs so they picked a very bad blog to push, hoping readers would go there and then see that blogs are all chintzy, benighted electronic “fish wraps”. If you don’t know why the star rose in June it is *NOT* important.
She obviously is completely out of touch with the story or she would know it is all a pack of lies. Both Killian’s wife and son said that he had the greatest respect for Bush. The son BTW was in the same TANG squadron. Subsequently several other officers and a few noncoms who served with Bush have said the story line is a complete fiction ginned up by Viacom and Rather. If she had bothered to read just a few of the blogs between 9/10 + 9/15 she would not have said the completely wrong things she said. But if you ever visited her blog you would know that she like Dan just makes “News” up. This explains why prior to the NEWSWEEK plug it got relatively few hits.
The only way one can honestly call Andrew Sullivan a conservative is if he calls Ronald Reagan a liberal. More intellectual chicanery from the MSM and America hating blogs.

Guest Blogging for Rusty
While Rusty's on vacation, he's asked me to help guest blog on his site. I know, we all miss Rusty, but maybe I can try to fill his shoes even partially while he's gone.
Allow me to introduce myself. Some of Rusty's readers know me already as I am an occassional commenter here as well as Rusty posts many of the similar stories that I do on my blog. My name is Chad Evans and I was born, raised and live in Texas. Being Texan naturally leads me to fulfill a few of the thousands of stereotypes about Texans, though I promise you not all of them are true (I don't own cattle).
I am 26 years old, operate my own small advertising agency/media buying company, do not have a family, and very proud of my alumni status as a graduate of the fine Texas Tech University.
I do not pretend to be an expert on anything I write other than my critiques on the media. Now how can I pretend to be an expert on the media? Well, I'm not an expert first off, but I have been published directly over 10 times, indirectly numerous times, performed media relations for two different sports organizations, have a degree in public relations and have a genuine interest in all things media related.
My hope during the next week or two, depending on his internet status during his second destination, is that I can keep you entertained and possibly enlightened on a few topics. There will be no test-blogging or gratuitous porn from me, but Rusty has promised both when he returns.

Hey Chad, Texas here too, I wasn't born here, but got here as fast as I could! I live in the city of Bedford, which is bet. Dallas and FW. My son has a few friends that go to Texas Tech. He is graduating from A&M next May.
Whereabouts do you live, near Tech or what? This is one of the greatest states to live in: pleasant temp's, lower cost of living, houses aren't that expensive, no state or city taxes, great public school system, clean and safe (for the most part!).
I now call Texas my "home"!!!!

I do no wear a cowboy hat and the only time I've ever put one on was when I was around four and my mother thought it would be a great photo-op with my brother and I in cowboy gear. I do own a pair of Redwings, though I hardly wear them anymore.
Perhaps the most inconsistent stereotype of those in Texas has to do with horses. I have ridden a horse maybe five times, all in Colorado and never in Texas.
Posted by: Chad at December 21, 2004 01:53 PM (ChuzU)
8
Yep. The only time I wore boots was during the "Urban Cowboy" trend, where everyone, no matter where they were from, wore western gear.
We're probably more metro than most people think. Hell, some friends of mine in the Bronx, still think there are little red barns, cows and horses roaming freely everywhere!
Then again, most people from TX think most of the Bronx consists of burned out tenements, druggies, crime infested and NO TREES.
I just got back from a trip back home to NYC, and both friends' homes that I stayed at had tree lined streets and little shops, reminicent of a Norman Rockwell painting.
Guess the media plays everything up, as well we know with the war.
Sigh.

Jawapalooza Coming to LA
Rusty Shackleford, yours truly, will be heading for Los Angeles this Saturday through whenever I feel like leaving. If any of you want to meet the man behind the legend, a couple of other bloggers and frequent commenters are going to hook up some time after Christmas for some eats. I'm thinking we should eat at one of the restaurants run by the Nation of Islam south of 50th? But if that doesn't work out we'll probably eat somewhere in the downtown area. E-mail me if you want to join us.
Guest bloggers: I'll try to e-mail you guys tomorrow and get things straightened out. Sorry, I put this off and now I'm wicked busy. I will have internet access in Cali, but not on the stupid cruise ship.

Well, Wonder Woman does have experience fighting fascism in WWII. On the other hand, Isis presumably has more experience with the region, given her Egyptian roots, so that's a wash.
They both look ridiculous flying- WW in her "invisible jet" and Isis, the only superhero who flys _standing up_.
Ultimately, I guess I'm going to go with Isis. WW may use her golden lasso, but undoubtedly Amnesty International would probably make out golden lasso interrogations to be a violation of the Geneva Conventions.
Isis, however, knows how to handle a staff.

But why Wonder Woman OR Mighty Isis? I'd rather team the two together to stop terror. Maybe add Captain Marvel to the group and at least have one GUY on the team. (I'm female, By-the-way.)

What is a Christian?
One who believes that Jesus atoned for sin.
That is all.
Carry on.

Thanks for the linkage. And for your thoughtful contribution. It is a deep question to ask. And one for which terms may actually have some meaning.

Well, technically, that's not the case, Rusty. It is one who ACCEPTS that atonement for himself (yeah, yeah - herself, too). Even the demons know WHO Jesus is and what he did, according to scripture.
For instance, in Matthew 8:28-31 it is clear the demons understood who they were up against:
28When He came to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, two men who were demon-possessed met Him as they were coming out of the tombs. They were so extremely violent that no one could pass by that way. 29 And they cried out, saying, "What business do we have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?" 30 Now there was a herd of many swine feeding at a distance from them. 31 The demons began to entreat Him, saying, "If You are going to cast us out, send us into the herd of swine."
(This is also recorded in Mark 5 & Luke 8.)
Then, in ACTS 9:15, Jesus's authority is again recognized by an "evil spirit" who was being confronted by a mystic exorcist who was unfaithfully using Jesus's name to attempt to cast it out of the man, since he witnessed Paul doing it.
15And the evil spirit answered and said to them, "I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?"
There are even satanic worshipers who will recognize who Jesus is. You still have to choose sides - just like any war.
But who's counting?

I think it's a little (LOT) more than that Rusty. What concerns me right now is what this country is doing when it comes to the Christian way of celebrating Christmas - and the worst thing is, these people are winning. That's scary and if this trend continues, it may come down to never having mangers in the town hall or Christmas trees up or any "Christian" way of celebrating Christmas anywhere in this country. Why is this happening? Whats going to happen in the future? If anyone doesn't see this as a problem they better open their eyes real soon.

Iain Hook's killing a planned Targeted Assassination to send a warning to Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan.
by Dr. Jack Shepard
According to an article published in the Guardian, May 7, 2003 written by Chris Mc Geal from Jerusalem, "No one believed the Israeli story that the sniper thought Iain was holding a gun, said one UN official close to the investigation. this solder was a trained commando. he had sights that magnified at least three times and he was only 20 meters (65ft) away.
Why was the Targeted assassination of a top British UN Official by the Israeli defense force Covered up by Prime Minister Tony Blair?
The message that goes out to every Israeli solder is that it is OK to kill the UN staffers working in Palestine.
Until the murderer of Iain Hook is convicted of his crime there never can be peace between the Israeli and Palestinian people. Tony Blair, knew all the facts that an Israeli Sniper was ordered to trap and later in the day assassinate Iain Hook, a former paratrooper from Felixstowe who was employed by the crown Agents and paid for by the British department for International development to head the UN project to reconstruct the Jenin Refugee camp as a warning to the secretary General Kofi Annan.
Tony Blair was well aware of the facts that many other UN staff members both International and Palestinian alike have been verbally abused, stripped, beaten, shot and killed by the Israeli soldiers, including attacks on UN ambulances, Medical Personal, UNWRA schools, Health Clinics and Offices have been hit by bombs, rockets, tank shells and gunfire by Israeli soldiers endangering the lives of UN staff and prime Minister Tony Blair continues to cover up these facts and even remains silent to his knowledge of the intelligence reports convening the planning and later assassinations of fellow British UN Staffer who was trapped for hours in his UN Office Compound before he was shot in the back on Nov. 22, 2002.
Blair continues to cover-up the targeted assassination of Iain Hook and his lack of criticism of the policies of the Ariel Sharon Government; shows his complicity.

This week's

Rusty,
What I want you to do is go out and rent TORCH SONG TRILOGY, BIRDCAGE and AS GOOD AS IT GETS and PHILADELPHIA - then come back and talk to me about your homophobic fears and how these movies changed your opinion instead of lumping them all into one group. There are others but start with these ASAP - please do me that favor; you'll thank me for it later.

Office Party
Second office party in a week. One more to go. I hate these things. The highlight of the afternoon will be those little tiny hot dogs in barbeque sauce. We have a copy machine. If we only had a few drunks things might get interesting. We don't. After the party I'm going to grade. Light blogging.

Hey, hey, hey! Since when do we use "guilt by association?" The whole Professor Phony crap has been Kevin and Paul EXCLUSIVELY! My whole contribution has been to eat my heart out in envy over the whole thing!
Time to rectify the situation. Rusty, if you'll kindly point me to some of your images that have not yet been stolen, I'll appropriate them posthaste.
For some people, it's "don't do the crime if you can't do the time." For me, it's "if you're gonna do the time, you might as well do the crime."

Weblog Awards and Defining 'Blogger'
The votes are in and the
2004 Weblog Awards race is over. Congrats to
Ace of Spades Headquarters, the only blog endorsed by me to win. So much for the crucial Rusty Shackleford endorsement.....
I have one bone to pick. I am pretty pissed about NRO's Kerry Spot winning for Best New Blog. Geraghty runs a great internet site, but it's not a blog. A blogger, by definition, doesn't have a boss. He might get paid through advertisements or donations, but he doesn't fill out a W-2. Geraghty is a columnist, Bill Ardolino is a blogger.
Kudos to Kevin Aylward who did his best to vet the process. I guess I'm partially to blame for some of the undeserving nominees making the final cut--I had promised him I'd help with the awards and then sort of cheesed out. Sorry, finals take a lot out of a guy. I had to decide whether to help with the awards or keep blogging. I chose the latter.
In the future, though, let's make sure blog awards go to, you know, bloggers. Not everyone who has a website is a blogger. Not everyone who writes online is a blogger. Bloggers are a community of the unprofessional. We are the pajamahadin. We are media entrepreneurs. We are what democracy looks like. We are the voice of the people.
We need to come up with a better definition for 'blog' and 'blogger'.
Ok, end pontification.
It was enough for me to make the final cut for Best New Blog of 2004. Thanks for the many endorsements--I lost track of them a day or so after the voting began. Shout out to all of you who didn't vote for me as instructed. Some props, too, for the homies who gave me their own awards. For instance, I received an award for Best Blog By A College Professor Who Can't Spell While Live Blogging During A Final Exam (in your face Llama Butchers) and one for Blogger most likely to appear under the headline 'Man Kills 5, Shoots Self' (update: read that one wrong earlier---I'm much happier with this one!!). I gladly accept those awards and thank all the little people that made this great occasion possible.....

We are the pajamahadin.
Ironic, isn't it, considering Geraghty was the first recorded instance of "pajamahadeen". This does not mean I disagree with you. Geraghty is good, but is he a blogger? And more importantly, does anyone care?

I"m afraid that you didn't quite pick up the right award statue from sortapundit. He actually named you the "Blogger most likely to appear under the headline 'Man Kills 5, Shoots Self'" and not the kind gay one.
That's not quite so good, I don't think...

Jimmie's right, Rustmeister.
I mean it in a good way, though. You're a little, er, unbalanced - but funny with it.
P.S. Frank J wants that gay statue back.

On the contrary, that is a blog. A corporation can have a blog and it's still a blog.
However, Best of the Web Today, while wonderful, is a column, not a blog. It shouldn't have been a nominee, never mind a winner. Nor should it and other non-blogs ever be in the Ecosystem.

Hm. There are a lot of people out there who are being paid to blog, but none of them are right-of-center. That said, there is something vaguely oxymoronic about calling something a "blog" that is part of an established media website.
And something a little weird about the Kerry Spot still being a web presence anyway. Election's over, you know?
The Best of the Web thing is a little the the Drudge Report thing: they both seem to be to be blog precursors. Taranto once called his thang a "bloglike column," and I liked that.
Personally, I'd love to be paid to blog, even if it meant that you'd never regard me as a True Blog again. I'll bet my husband would like it, too.

Jay, I just don't see it that way. It's like calling the Dallas Cowboys a great college football team. And I'm not knocking Geraghty, he's great, he's just not a blogger.

Rusty,
I think that's exactly what Jay was saying - the winner should not even have been on the list, should never have won because it's not a real blog nor is it done by a blogger under "Best of the Web." Either I'm mistaken but you both said the same thing, just differently.
I know, happens all the time. And Rusty, I did vote for you!!
Couldn't vote for you Jay because I couldn't find your name anywhere; maybe next year will be different and like the llamas, you'll have a partnership on a blog. (hint)
You're both great as far as I'm concerned.
