Online Integrity: Protecting The Privacy of Bloggers
Josh Trevino has come up with a voluntary, nonpartisan and nonideological code, meant to bring a basic measure of decency to online discourse. As one of the last of the anonymous bloggers, I wholeheartedly endorse it.
I've never understood the need to make claims of authority when writing online. Either what I write makes sense, or it does not. As long time readers of this blog know, I never write anything on this blog which is related to my academic research. My graduate school training may have helped me learn to write, but it did not train me to write about terrorism, propaganda, or South Park. My field of expertise usually comes as quite a shock to those meeting "Rusty" for the first time.
You do not need to know who I am. I am not Dr. Rusty Shackleford. For those of you who know the real me and have helped me keep my identity private, I thank you. Even though I have not even met some of you personally, I consider you friends.
There have been various attempts to "out" me. For the most part, these efforts are attempts to shut me up. No untenured college professor would dare to say some of the things I've said over the years--even when they are in tongue-in-cheek. Thus, trying to dig into the personal lives of public figures is a way to squelch what they really think.
The tactic may be familiar for readers of John Aravosis' America Blog. Aravosis and his readers have made it their mission to "out" gay public figures who have taken public stances against issues they support. They justify this as pointing out "hypocrisy"--a gay Congressman is a hypocrite if he doesn't support gay marriage and thus "deserves" to be outed. But really, this is nothing more or less than the online equivalent of blackmail---either change your policy stance or we will reveal to the world embarrassing information. Closetted gay Congressman who agree with Aravosis need not feel threatened. Their secret is safe.
At the most nefarious level, though, trying to "out" anonymous bloggers can be dangerous. The recent online attacks against my long-time blog friend Aaron is evidence that the various death threats I've received in the past should be taken seriously. Thus, for those of us who use humor to take on the Islamists and jihadis, our anonymity is also our shield against potentially violent repercussions. While I don't think most jihadis have the means to carry out their threats, it is possible that some of them do. Yet another reason for me to remain anonymous.
1
You say: Either what I write makes sense, or it does not...You do not need to know who I am.
I totally agree. The nice thing about the internet is that if a blogger states facts which are fictions he/she is rapidly discredited by other blogger/readers. There's no need to know the identity of the writer. It might be interesting, but it's not necessary. This is doubly so in the case of op-ed blogs like yours. As you say, you make sense, or you don't. I agree with your opinions, or I don't.

It should be noted that there is a LONG history of anonymous political writing. Much of the debate over our constitution was conducted pseuodonymously, sometimes quite anonymously. A recent Supreme Court case argued that campaign finance laws that forbid the distribution of anonymous pamphlets violated the 1st amendment, since anonymous speech was still protected.
On the other hand: I don't think that the blogosphere really is that self-correcting. I've pointed out factual errors to bloggers, and they remain uncorrected. Not matters of opinion, but screaming howlers of stupidity--like JFK voted against the Civil Rights Act (he was dead). Moreover, I think that it is simply too much effort to evaluate each comment you read on the internet for truth. Over time, you learn who walks with the truth, and you give their claims more credence. You also look to see who corrects their errors when they make them. I'd rather read someone who is 70% correct, if they fix what is wrong, than read someone who is 90% correct if they never change the 10% that is erroneous. And sometimes, knowing that a blogger is a PhD in public opinion, for example (like Charles Franklin's wondrous website) gives his opinions about that question added weight with me. Qualifications do matter, as does fact checking and fact correcting.

I post openly under my real name. While other people seem to feel safer "in the closet" I do not think it offers much in the way of real protection. I will not post or say anything in secret that I would not say in public. Although I did make some prank phone calls when I was a child.

John--if you had a website, would you post cartoons of the prophet? And still be public about your name?
I've had people threaten me physically based on what I post (that's actually illegal, but whatever). And threaten to somehow send my computer viruses. I don't take those threats seriously at all. But if someone knows your name, and develops a hatred for you, there are a lot of little asinine things he can do to make your life miserable.
My own feeling is that death threats against bloggers by "terrorists" are highly uncredible. Why would they go after some minor blogger when they could take out some of the really high profile cons or libs who they could hate? It's not like Michelle Malkin, Andrew Sullivan, or Kos go around with phalanxes of security guards. Remember, publicity is to terror what air is to fire. Why would they risk their lives to get 1/10 of the publicity by killing Rusty (sorry to kill you as an example, Doc) when they could get their cause much more attention by killing, say, Hugh Hewitt?

Your privacy is, of course, your own business. But you don't mention the down side of privacy: You get to say any damned thing you want without having to take responsibility for it. That's a pretty interesting position from someone who believes in state censorship during times of war. But of course we should only censor/out/punish those who speak out against/expose state policies that you do support, right?

And for those who express concern that their may be economic setbacks if their potentai clients or employers found out about the secret thought posted here, well there are plenty of new jobs being created daily. For all the data Greg came out with (and I for one found it rather ummm amusing) I think he did it more for sport then to cause real harm. Aw Shaddap!
Not the kind of thing to say to bloggers since they are just waiting on an argument and have blogs.
Glenn Reynolds Via TCS Daily : It seems like a lot of people are trying to shut up bloggers all of a sudden. It also doesn't seem to be working very well.
One example from last week was a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack against a blog, Aaron's CC
I agree as strategy that is sure to backfire. Glenn includes other examples including Bill Hobbs.

This would be a "foot in the door" and the beginning of PC on the web. This is somthing we should fight against. Denial of free speech is against our first amendment rights. First one, then another, then just "approved blogs" by some council.

Hey, I grew up playing Cowboys and Injuns too ya know. And yeah I don't know of anybody around these parts that doesn't at least claim to have some "injun blood" in em. Davec,
Hard to say. It is their responsibility to maintain our society. What they should be doing is planning for the country's future energy needs. There is lots of flack given the oil companies that they are not spending enough on alternative energy. That's not their job. That is up to the Government to encourage research into those areas.
On the bright side, the high price of gas now makes alternative energy more viable, especially wind. The Europeans are actually complaining because the US is buying up all the wind generation equipment on the market and they can't get their hands on as much as they want any longer.

The hope is to tell via cartograms which areas were considered important and when. I'm hoping to get an article published about religious geography. I would greatly appreciate any division of labor help.

Spring By the Ocean
I was in my car when the rain began to fall. Large, unexpected drops hampering visibility and causing a small Mazda to swerve in front of me. I flicked on my windshield wipers and stared at the traffic in front of me. Like a swollen river, the freeway was suddenly clogged, unpredictable, and dangerous. I got off at Ocean, and unrolled my window. Wild blue waves crashed and churned the sand. The smell of the salty ocean spray mingled with the fresh rain.

What did you think Larry, that I was a barbarian or something? Just because I want to decorate every highway overpass and lamp post in the country with the stinking corpses of muslims and liberals doesn't mean I'm not civilized. Indeed, it is my love of civilization that makes me want to preserve it by destroying its enemies. Civilization wasn't built by gutless wimps, but by men with blood on their hands.
I really will pity liberals and muslims when TSHTF, because none are near as smart or as fierce as they believe themselves to be, and for all their violent demonstrations, I'm afraid they won't last long when it's time to start cutting throats.

Bringing a Knife to a Gun Fight
Rusty is back. Chicago was great. Thanks to all for covering for me while I was busy rubbing elbows with other political scientists, eating pizza, re-enacting scenes from The Untouchables, and hanging out at the Art Institute. Good times, all around.
At the MPSA I attended a panel of political scientists who blog. When I said my name was "Rusty Shackleford" they just looked at me like "so what?" Which was odd, because I had thought pretty much every one knew about The Jawa. If my plans for world domination are to ever come to fruition, I'm going to have to start working harder here. Much harder. Also, if any one has a spare monkey's paw, that might also help.
I have several hundred e-mails to answer. It might be a few days until blogging is back to normal.

Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. Michael and SeanÂ’s Trip to Iraq, The End
Read how they almost became evil tobacco smugglers too. And if poor old Howie can spare some change for Michael so can you. I enjoyed the whole series. Worth every cent I reckon.
Michael Totten :Hey, Joey. Have you ever seen the inside of a Turkish prison?
I did not want to see the inside of a Turkish prison.
Himdad handed Sean five cartons of cigarettes and pointed at his backpack. Sean looked at me without a word.
“I don’t know,” I said. “What do we do?”
If we didnÂ’t carry five cartons apiece Himdad would be busted for smuggling again before we even got back into Turkey. Then what? He was our ride. Would we get in trouble, as well? Aside from stupid tourists like us, who on earth goes into Iraq for six hours? Who tries to bribe his way across the border except people who are up to no good?

WTW Hilton Screws Over 100 Vets
No, not Paris screws over 100 vets you dirty, dirty boys, Hilton Hotels “screws over” 100 vets. There hope I made that clear. Paris does seem to have a heart and as we all know rich hotties like Paris pretty much get their way. So Paris, have a heart , raise some hell and get some arrangements made for this group. I’ll even put up a bottle of Howie’s wine for you. You can’t buy it with money honey! Only by helping these guys out.
Lisa Hoffman Via Capital Hill Blue :At Fran O'Brien's Stadium Steak House, hundreds of
soldiers and Marines maimed in the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan have dined gratis on thick steaks, tossed
back a few cold ones and basked in the normalcy and
comradeship offered there.
But come May 1, those much-anticipated outings from
local military hospital wards will cease. Hilton Hotel
Corp., landlord of the restaurant, is evicting Fran's
from its decade-long location in the basement of the
Capital Hilton in downtown D.C.
"For strictly business reasons related solely to the
inability to reach a new lease arrangement, the
Capital Hilton has elected to terminate the lease,"
hotel general manager Brian Kelleher said in an
e-mailed statement.

I dunno maybe. Actually Paris is pretty sharp. Wild but not a stupid person. Remember her last name is Hilton. I don't care how they work it out as long as it is. If she did she could generate some good publicity. It's doubtfull but worth a shot.

I'm with MOJO, they don't consult Paris Hilton when making any decisions concerning the business. She just primps and dresses and smiles for the camera. She has 'people' who think for her.

Yeah but this is background noises crusade this week. Ive been lucky enough to go with grandpa to some reunions with his buddies and It's pretty amazing the relationsships vets have. Now of course background and I are opposites as far as politics. But....If you are left and against the war it's unfair to saddle the soldier with the politics fo the war. They serve. If Hilton Hotels is just being cheap an inconsiderate that's not very good business. There is a lot of politics in business. So you pretty much hve to include Paris and her sister cause well you now. The general aim I have is to just bring a bit of attention in hopes that they will make some kind of arrangement to help these guys out. I don't really care what just do something nice. I's sure Hilton if they wanted to could help make plans for so these guys an continue to meet somewhere. From my experience it means a lot to vets to get together. All I ask. Background is still all wound up on this one so I will update tomorrow with newinfo he sent. See how this works. Background has an issue I can kind of see the point of. He sends me stuff and we tried to work out what we agree on and go from there. To me that's what blogs are for. Probably we won't have any luck as by now it's obvious Paris (or Hilton Hotels) does not read The Jawa Report. Making money is all good but you also need to have good will toward your business. Some times you have to invest a bit in that too. Note this is an issue a reader brought to us. I encourge similar participation from our regulars and readers left and right. This blog leans right but so what.
Be American first. I like for our men and women who have given so much to be treated well.

I really appreciate Howie's help on this. Anyone who takes a moment to think about this realizes it is not an issue of Right vs. Left. It is about Right vs. Wrong.
Now is the time for anyone interested in supporting the troops who really need it most, to join up for Operation Perish Hilton (tip of the hat to Chris Dickson for the name....brilliant)
Here are just some of the things we can do. It is time to boycott the following hotel chains:
Conrad Hotels
Doubletree
Embassy Suites
Hampton Inn
Hampton Inn & Suites
Hilton Garden Inn
Homewood Suites
Scandic
Another way to show support is for people who do travel to pick up the stationary from their hotel room and write a letter to Hilton corporate headquarters, the local newspapers, TV and radio stations saying:
"I'm sending you this note from [non Hilton property] to let you know I think the way Hilton Hotel Corp. is treating the people and patrons at Fran O'Brien's Steak House in Washington DC is wrong. I chose to stay at [non Hilton property] because I support our troops. I simply can't get a good night's sleep at a Hilton property as long as they turn their back on severely wounded soldiers."

Kitten: Now there you go again. You are so blinded by your anti bush thinking. Now I don't always agree with him either. I called him china's beotch Friday. Why because well some times he seems politically silly. Walking right into some. So the same qualities that make him stubborn and determined hurt us politicallcy. Now I work for a realy conervative company. The did an employeee survey a while back. Now you can just imagine some of the responseses. So at the meeting (these things always result in a meeting don't they) of course the companie stood fast and seems immoveable. But if you discard what they said and watch their actions obver time you see they do do things to make it better they just never admit to it. I dunno why fear that if they appear soft they will have to do way more. But their interet is keeping the best and they have to work on it. Several high level engineers who taught this associates degree their engineering skills have left. We workk your ass off and we have to but we also need to be responsive enoug to keep those we with to keep. It's a deliate balance. so conservatives often come off harsher than they really are. Now for the Democrats what bothers me and I'm a swing voter is the fact thay have become the party of inti this anti that. Progressive they call it. Ok to me the Democratic party is supposed to be about fighting for freedonm for all. In fact that's also a Republican value. So let's call it an American value. If you realy really think Bush is just fighting for greed then go meet up with abu muscab al zaqueery and talk him into peace. It's not going to work. The democratic leaders have pulled the leftish away from the roots of thier party. The Rerpubicans have sold it's small government lank of the platform out. Libertarian party just doent'have the pull. So i propose a new party the "I'm A Real American Dammit Party." The baisic idea is that there is a sliver of way too nutty conservatives who want to tell everyone what right is. There is the nutty moonbat wing of the Democratic prty who sells out America and freedom just to attack Bush becuase well he gets to fight for freedom and we cant' stand it. There are a hell of a lot more of the rest of us. You know normal people. My Parents are conservative union democrats. My stepays will be the first to say the main problem with his union is a lot of worthless bastards use the benefits and protections they worked so hard for to fuck off all day. I'm all for the right to bargain as a group but politics gets into the leadership and to increase their take they will sell out the memebership a short term raise for long term "damn I need a job". I'm a libertarian leaning Reagan Republican who thinks if you are depending on the government to solve problems other than roads and defense well your are an idiot. We have former Democrats on this site who have become so disgusted with the left they call "liberalism a mental disorder" Well it was't at one time. And that's a shame. Since background is so would up I saw that cartoon with the Taxi and damn strait. The mainstream Democrats need to put the hard left in their place. Also the mainstream right needs to box stand up to the far right of our party. I see a possible enlightenment since the Jill Carroll release. Terrorist hate liberals terorist hate Bush because he stands in their way. I like bush but I admit some days his political nose it clogged and he hands the democats and issue just like Hilton through is stubborness is getting a block eye. Now Hiton I'm sure can't afford to cave on every issue. But our men are fighting for us. There are Democrat voulenteers who serve. There are Republican voulenteers who serve. There are a lot of good Americans and the sooner we get ont eh same page and get bck to American ideal the better. The enemy is counting on us to not be able to come together as one. They depend on us to hate each other more than we hate them. It is their only hope of victory and it's not unreasonable to assume we will. War is not perfect it's a pain a struggle but it's ght right one. We can help what we can. We here piss off a lot of Muslims as well trying to fight the ones who have taken Islam which means peace and took the will of Allah as I understand it and twisted into a murderous bloody excuse for war at the pleaseure of Lucifer. I beg those true muslims to take up the fight aginst those who destroy Islam from within. We all need to fight for the right ideas. I'm not against core democratic prncipals one but I just don't see much of that anymore. I also don't see much core smal government out of out side. But right now I feel we have a chance to change that. The terrorist offensive this year seems pretty bad so for. Seemed powerful but we are still standing and so is Iraq. The kurds especially. Afghanistan is doing well too. Thay all have a long way to go adn we can;t hand em a pass. we have to push and help and assist. Fighting the terroists is required. But liberal charity and humanitarian help is just a required. Go back to your true values. Fight for freedom in a manner you feel confortable with. American needs true democratic values. America needs true conservative values. Muslims need out help to fight and regain respect for their faith. So be a True American Democrat or Republican. Fight for libery and freedom. Be an american dammit. If you are a Muslim fight the doctrine of evil. Or go to the mall and but an "I hate Bush sticker" if you are a damn fool. Be a real American Dammit. I'm disgusted with politics and it's about damn time we start using our heads and stop alowing politics in Washington to make enemies of our own countrymen. We can destroy our ourselves for politcal gain in the next election or we can all go back to being Americans first and Democrats or Republicans second. Be a Real American dammit. If you hate war I think you need to turn your attention to the actual enemy beause your fellow American bothers ain't it. We can'g fight it perfectly and it sure as hell is a lot harder when our own countrymen are not helping. I don't go to Kos much but what bothered me yesterday is the misguided hate of Bush and the Right. Out of the commnts I read very many were good. And then there were those that were just silly. Be a real American dammit.

Or, you can just wave me down. I'm kind of hard to miss. I'll be the only guy there wearing a fur coat, with an entourage--complete with at least two washed-up former child stars-- and four big Samoan bodyguards protecting my precious self. Come to think of it, better e-mail me first. The last guy that sought an audience with the Macktastick Rusty Wickedmeister without a formal letter of introduction had his arm broken by Tagiilima--the big one.
Hell if I knew. Fight him, I guess. It would be too late, though, once we figured out that such a thing would be necessary.
"Just make sure he sticks to the mountains," I said. "Mosul is down in the plains. As long as this road hugs the mountains, we're still on the way to Dohok."
I was annoyed at myself for feeling paranoid. I was the one who had earlier said We can hitchhike in Northern Iraq.
A half-hour later our driver took us back on the main road at a Peshmerga checkpoint. He turned the car toward the mountains, toward Dohok. Not toward the plains. Not toward the dangerous red zone and Mosul.
"I guess that was a shortcut," Sean said.
"

Buy your groceries in KY and no sales tax either. ThatÂ’s sticking it to the man! Never mind itÂ’s probably cheaper to pick up a bottle of ripple at the liquor store. Here in the first pic you see how the wine looked about 10 days ago. See the line itÂ’s clearing up.

Well said. Now for the important question. Will you drain the wine off more than once?

I'll try not to. I like the bottles up caps off fill one move on fill one move on. I try to keep the hose off the bottom a so as not to stir. Then when the booze gets really low I get what I can and mark that bottle as ?. Nver can get the last part(inch or three).

Jawa vs. Schlussel
Sources tell me that I'll be on the radio in a few minutes to challenge Debbie Schlussel. While I cannot reveal to you my sources, they seem pretty reliable. You can listen to Hoist the Black Flag here.
In case I'm incoherent, my main point is not that Jill Carroll was a saint or that she wasn't against the war, but only that she was a victim. Hostages are the victim and terrorists are the bad guys. In the middle of a crime, one does not attack the victim, you go after the criminal. That's all.
UPDATE: So, during the break, Schlussel says she doesn't want to talk with me and that had she known I was going to confront her that she wouldn't have agreed to the interview. She also had the audacity to call me a "nut". Me. The nut. Right Debbie, right. I'm a "nut" for saying it's not good manners to attack a woman who is being held hostage. You, on the other hand, are the voice of reason.
I won't be on. The offer was retracted after Schlussel threw a fit. I'm not blaming Ace or Goldstein. They were just trying to be good hosts and have some class since Debbie Schlussel was the original guest & I was kind of an afterthought.
Another update: I'm not even sure Ace knew I was calling in, but Jeff thought it would be good radio.
Oh, ye of little faith and reading comprehension skills. I never mentioned the video, only these facts, which remain the same. http:/(no link whoring for you! -Vinnie) Jill Carroll's an extremist. And you apparently have a problem with premature articulation. Next time, read first. You got something wrong, though. More than thirty seconds in a room with you, and I think I'd have to kill you. Debbie Schlussel
Don’t expect “journalist” Jillie to “investigate” that one. But hey, she says her Islamic terrorist captors treated her “very well,” and she talked about the nice shower and bathroom they gave her.
Since things were so great in captivity, maybe she should have remained at Terrorist Day Spa. And maybe they should change the name from “Stockholm Syndrome” to “Baghdad Syndrome.”
That is what Debbie Schlussel wrote after watching Jill Carroll's last two videos which were obviously coerced. Yes, Debbie, I'm the nut.
Another update: Ace has a post about it here. Like I said before, I don't blame Ace. Okay, I do blame Ace. But not for dropping my call. For dropping a Patrick Swayze reference into an e-mail conversation we just had. Now that, my friend, is out of bounds. No need to bring Patrick Swayze into the conversation.
The real problem we (and there are a lot people in that we) have with Schlussel is that when some of us pointed out that we disagreed with her, she responded by leaving some pretty inflammatory comments on our blogs. Then, after some of us called her on it, she played the part of victim.
See how that works, you leave nasty comments on our blogs, and then we we say nasty things back and you claim to be the victim.
And it's not just a few people. This has happened over and over again with Debbie who has either left nasty comments or written fairly nasty e-mails.
Now, she claims that she was really trying to point out that the Left supported Jill Carroll because she was one of them--a form of hypocrisy. Fair enough, and true enough, but in the process she also claimed Jill Carroll wasn't faking it when her terrorist captors forces her to say the most vile things about America. That, I think, is just stupid and, to be fair to Debbie, something I might have said at one time--and in fact, have said. But since I've actually been in contact with the families of hostages, since it's become somewhat of my cause, I've decided that such criticisms are usually out of bounds.
Again, my problem was in Debbie's reading of Jill Carroll's motivations, not in pointing out the dispicable way in which the Left often vocally supports the release of Leftist hostages but are silent when the hostage has no connection to the anti-war movement. But that's just the point: we should be against hostage taking because it is a barbaric practice, not be vocal only when it suits our political agenda.
Seriously, and I do mean to brag a bit, if you want to know anything about hostages in Iraq, this is the place and I am the go-to guy in the blogosphere. Check out our hostage archives for some evidence.
So, it's not that I disagree with Schlussel--I think you'll find I linked to her several times in the past, all positive--it's just that I (shall I say we?) don't like Schlussel.
Thanks again to Ace for offering to have me on the show next week. I dunno, though. I'm just not sure that Schlussel and myself have a real bone to pick and the only reason this has escalated the way it has is because some people are rather thin-skinnied, an attribute not well suited to the blogosphere.

Rusty, you are in good company. Debbie has threatened to call the FBI on me, she threatened Misha with a lawsuit and just out and out insulted my husband, John Donovan.
You are absolutely right about being kind to a victim - I was disappointed in Jeff and Ace - they both seemed to be saying that everything Debbie writes is okay with them.

In this battle, you are on the side of the angels. She's someone who believes that death is all too good for someone who criticizes Israel in any way. You are, I believe, a very very strong supporter of Israel who just thinks that no one taken by terrorists should be judged worthy of death, or unworthy of rescue, or unworthy, at the least, of our sympathy, and our restraint from mockery.
Incidentally, a recent column of hers has a howler of an error--she says that JFK voted against the Civil Rights Act...uh...no way.

jd, jfk was dead when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, so obviously he couldn't vote for or against it.

I can't imagine why you wouldn't like someone as charming as Death Threat Debbie. What's not to like? By the way, is "Schlussel" german for "Cupid Stunt?"

Schlussel is a whack-job. I have a hilarious ranting e-mail string from her from a couple months back when I embarrassed her on her blog. Anyone interested, shoot me an e-mail and I'll forward it.

Is there anybody Schlussel doesn't hate, or want to sue?

Schlüssel is German for "key." Unfortunately, while I'm rarely at a loss for snarky remarkies, I can't think of anything clever to say about keys.

I believe that was my point, Jesus land joe. Although, there were civil rights acts in 1957 and 1960. JFK voted for both. What she may be thinking of is that in 57 JFK was part of a key group of liberal and moderate northerners who voted with the South on the jury trial amendment to the 57 CRA. To many liberals, that defanged the act, since at the time, no southern jury would convict a white man, regardless of the evidence, of a crime against black voting rights or civil rights. But JFK ultimately voted for the 57 CRA, so she's still dead wrong.
I'm sure she will correct the error soon....
