Best of the Worst or Worst of the Best?
This weeks
Bonfire of the Vanities is up. I will be hosting next weeks, so start writing your worst post of the upcoming week now!
Might I suggest this post over at Beautiful Attrocities for next weeks Bonfire? Jeff is hereby elevated to Sith Master and required to read this post before he goes accusing me of being a Star Wars fanatic again--and instead think more along the lines of South Park! (the Natalie Portman thing, though, is correct)
I also nominate Gordon the Cranky Neocon for not kissing but and not trying to score with blog-sista Jane (she's married dude). Jane, of course, doesn't qualify for the Bonfire because her recently published op-ed in the Lebanon Daily Star is brilliant.

Kill Baby Kitties
Come on you wimps. You know you want to kill cats. And not just the annoying ones in the alley that keep you up all night. The newborn kittiess too. One week old, eyes not open, suckling their mommy kitty's teet--you want to grab them and throw them down on the ground, then step on them and watch their brains ooze out. Cowards. Admit it, you love to kill kittens!
And while you're looking down at their brains on your jackboots, ask yourself this question--Can a kitty killer really love America?

Olympic Blog Ban
When the left starts talking about corporate censorship, and I read this story, I start thinking they have a point.
USA Today:
Athletes may be the center of attention at the Olympic Games, but don't expect to hear directly from them online — or see snapshots or video they've taken.
The International Olympic Committee is barring competitors, as well as coaches, support personnel and other officials, from writing firsthand accounts for news and other Web sites.
An exception is if an athlete has a personal Web site that they did not set up specifically for the Games.
The IOC's rationale for the restrictions is that athletes and their coaches should not serve as journalists — and that the interests of broadcast rightsholders and accredited media come first.
Participants in the games may respond to written questions from reporters or participate in online chat sessions — akin to a face-to-face or telephone interview — but they may not post journals or online diaries, blogs in Internet parlance, until the Games end Aug. 29.
PS-Just to piss the IOC off, why not visit pole vaulter Jill
ian Schwartz's blog? Or swimming relay bronze metalist
Nate Dusing's blog? Maybe Team USA racewalker
Phillip Dunn's photoblog is more your style? Or you can see the results of the ban at steeplechaser
Anthony Famiglietti's former blog......

They did this last Olympics too and there was some heated discussion about it at the time.
The IOC is notably sleazy, even for a corporate/NGO hybrid. All the worst of both components: the conscienceless grasping of profit and power from a leftie's worst corporate nightmare, along with the self-righteousness and totalitarian tendencies of a rightie's worst NGO nightmare. Ask anyone who's dealt with them - host cities in particular have told many a hair-raising tale.

I'm bigger than Chomsky!!
Did you know
Noam Chomsky has a blog?
Ghost of a Flea is in an all out race to beat Chomsky in the TTLB Ecosystem, begging for linkage. I just checked my own
TTLB rating, and I beat Chomsky by a full 192 blogs!!! Just two days ago I was another 20 blogs ahead (see what happens when you don't post for two days).
Since I'm sure Chomsky will begin to climb as soon as word gets out about his blog, here are my two goals:
a) never link Chomsky again. The TTLB Ecosystem is based on number of unique incoming links. NEVER link Chomsky. If you want to say something about his blog, don't link it. Why? This post explains it with a follow up post here.
b) get banned at Zmag, where Chomsky's blog has a home. You can wear that as a badge of honor. "I was banned at Zmag!" No, I take this one back. Zmag wants you to front $3 bucks for the honor of comenting. No wonder Chomsky has zero comments to his posts. You think any of his readers even has a job?
Those are my goals, and should be yours too!!!
UPDATE: Tuning Spork more thoroughly fisks Chomsky and doesn't drop a link!
Also, kudos to Mark and Comrade Rusty (wink) for also taking the pledge!

Whew! You're late to the party on this one, Rusty. This was news three months ago, and the reason he shut down comments was because every incensed whack job in the blogosphere was posting 30,000 anti-Chomsky screeds therein. At roughly 100 commenters a post that comes to (counts on fingers] 3 million anti-Chomsky words a post. Even his ego couldn't deal with that much hatred. It's too bad you missed it - those comments were a wonder to behold.
I mean, really - it was remarkable.

14
Wow, what's the big deal about Chomsky? He's actually pretty good. I mean sure he's saying all this bad stuff about the US, but it's all pretty much true. The thing is, I love the US unconditionally, but not the US government unconditionally (many mistakenly think its the same thing). So if you love capitalism and freedom as much as I do, and you want to promote it as best you can, you have to look at what the preeminant symbol of capitalism and freedom is doing for capitalism and freedom. THAT MEANS that you have to look at the actions of the US government (covert ops, low intensity warfare, subversion of foreign elections, removal of Aristride from Haiti, etc, etc, etc). If the US govenrment is actually hurting the cause of freedom and capitalism, then ultimately it's turning the world towards communism more effectively than communists ever could! (Not to mention that I actually do think killing for profit is wrong.)
So, if you love capitalism and freedom as I do (in a sane balanced way), then you have to read Chomsky because he is the best person to actually tell you about what bad things the US is doing (which ultimately creates communism). We can't be effective pro-capitalists without knowing what the US is doing in its name. Chomsky is without a doubt required reading for those of us who want to promote capitalism.
Posted by: Dusty at August 25, 2004 01:50 PM (ui96k)
15
Dusty, your words remind me of many Europeans' comment on how they "love" the Americans, but hate their government - and they don't hold it againsts the American "people" that their government sucks.
So far so good, but there is a fundamental flaw here, one they are not aware of and neither are you, as you blithely repeat how you "love" capitalism: their thinking derives from the socialist (therefore profoundly anti-capitalist) dogma they share with that treasonous weasel Chomsky. Saying that "people" are OK but their government is not denies the "people" their credibility and liberty in choosing how they live.
Novel thought, but did it ever occur to you that "people" in their majority actually do not dislike the current state of affairs? Listening for too long to communist propaganda from moveon and other moore-onic sources might lead one to believe that "people" really "suffer" - whereas the truth lies entirely elsewhere.

Where to start?
You don't post for two days and the whole world falls apart. First, you get the Swifties being
fisked all over the mainstream media while they let Kerry get away with
murder (and I mean that literally, if you take Kerry at his word that he was a war criminal). This is what Noam Chomsky calls the
'selection bias' or something to that effect (yes, I'm too lazy to pop open my copy of
Manufaturing Consent!)
On another front you have a (yet another--what is the plural form of truce?? tuces? truci?) truce with al Sadr being brokered and broken twice since my last post. Didn't any one at State ever read The Boy Who Cried Wolf?
So, I'm going to just ignore everything that has happened in the last 72 hours. Tuesday and Wednesday didn't happen. Ah, this is what it feels like to be a Democrat! It's not as bad as I expected.

Self-explanatory. Take carne asada (a marinated, grilled mexican flank steak that gets served whole, or diced and served on burritos or tacos. Standard toppings include diced onions and tomatoes, Cilantro, cheese, guacamole, and Crema), derve it over a pile of french fries. I prefer mine lite on the toppings, no guac or crema.
Sounds analexplodalicious.

What's the matter, Rusty?? Having a bad day? I know you post and are a guest host on other websites, which ones I have no idea, but what made you say today "Screw You Guys, I'm going Home!" ??? Need a partner? Too much to do?? What blew your cork today?? Just curious.
I know that this is probably not the right place for this and if not, you may remove it - not sure if people actually comment here or on the links you send them to or what BUT I would like to bring up the fact that our NATIONAL GUARDSMEN AND WOMEN and RESERVISTS from all branches of the service, ARE LOSING THEIR LIVELIHOODS, THEIR HOMES, SOME EVEN THEIR FAMILIES because the government is PLUCKING them right out of society, disregarding the purpose they play in their society, to serve their country, to protect American, to fight for us and what do we do and what does the government do to help these soldier's out. I really think an AWARENESS has to be made regarding these individuals and that ALL OF US and our GOVERNMENT owe them more than just a debt of GRATITUDE, they deserve our HELP. And AWARENESS OF THEIR SITUATION IS UTMOST. I'd also like to see all the groups out there helping our fellow people - not just Florida who needs our donations desperately, but all around this country. Why can't we FOCUS on the GOOD things we do FOR A CHANGE?? Then let me know what I can do to make you NOT say "Screw you guys, I'm going home!"
I realize you are getting ready for school - teaching college or higher ups and there's a lot on your mind and this can't take the place of everything when you have so much to do. I don't know who you are, or where you are from, or where you teach. But when you get disgusted, try not only going home, but find a comfort movie or a comedy and sit back and relax. If you're married and have kids, snuggle up and appreciate what you have and in the meantime, consider yourself lucky. I have no one and it's very lonely and someone as chronically ill and disabled as I am living - if that's what you want to call living - on $584 a month for 17 years now, life is very difficult for me. Consider yourself blessed. At least you have a family and a life worth living, so be grateful for that and protect that with all your might, because it makes you what you are. I really do hate listening to people blogging who make no sense whatsoever and I scream at the computer "SPEAK ENGLISH" but we have people to take care of, including ourselves and those who are losing more than we can imagine. "Some gave some; some gave all" and we never forget them. I don't know whom you are sending the screw you guys, too, but it can't be this gimp - I have had my own hell, some worst that another. Consider yourself Lucky, Rusty, and consider yourself lucky.

Now that is just plain stupid - when I actually care about Rusty and why he just posted that one line - which does not link to anything, so it seems to me he is obviously upset about something and I'm sticking out my hand of friendship to someone who just might need it. FBA,
Just as a guess, I also think Rusty was being a bit tounge-in-cheek, although I'm sure appreciates the sentiment behind your inquiry.

FBA: "Screw you guys, I'm going home" is a line from South Park. It permeated Rusty's old site and is just a way of saying "see you later."

Yeah, Rusty, WTF? Don't you know you have a public duty to only blog morally uplifting themes that will help spread the news to the gulags about all that BusHitlerMcSmirkyChimp and his evil Sith Masters at Bechtelhalliburtonharkencarlylegroup are doing to supress America? The memory, she's seared---seared!---in my memory, more so than the mental image of a $10 pegging from Jessica Cutler on Christmas Eve in Phnom Penh!
Sheesh. Some people have no respect---that's why we are paying you the big bucks in subscription fees to read MyPetJawa. The next thing you're going to tell us is that "Rusty Schackleford" isn't your REAL name!
PS--why isn't "blogging in your underwear from the basement" one of the seven deadly sins?

Steve,
Blogging from the basement in your underwear is not a deadly sin.
However, blogging in your underwear at work is usually considered grounds for termination in most work environments.

Too funny. Steve, why can't you change LLAMABUTCHERS to something else. I will not visit your site - you see, I raise and breed LLAMAS!!! he he he

Cindy, thanks for your concern. But Bill and GCL have it right, this was just a way of me saying 'later'. It's one of those inside references that only SP fans get.
And to Bill, GCL, Steve, BRD, Brian, & Gordon--thanks for defending my honor--now cut Cindy some slack.

The In Between Meetings Post
Meetings all morning. One good thing is that I grabbed one of the precious back-row chairs. What was the meeting about? No idea. I did get a chance to read chapters one and two of
Campaigns in the 21st Century, by Richard J. Semiatin, though. The book is assigned reading for my Campaigns and Elections class I'm teaching this fall. So far, so good. The author seems pretty fair and picks on Dems and Reps pretty equally.
One interesting bit from chapter 1 was the way the author characterized Karl Rove vs. Dick Morris. Dick Morris is said to be a professional opportunist who works for the money. Karl Rove, on the other hand, is described as a loyal friend of the Bush family who turned down opportunities to make millions in the private sector for a White House appointment. Interesting.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Blogging: 3-D
Like the famed Phoenix of Arizona, this post is reborn out of the ashes of my archives. What started as a silly post to indulge my vanity has made the internet rounds.
Like a DJ at a top-forty station I will suck every last hit out of this post until the public cries in unison, "Enough! Away with your foul reposting!!" Besides, with mucho responsibilities around the Ivory Tower and with the relatives in town, I really haven't had time to sit down and write anything meaningful. Not that I ever write anything meaningful....
If you've already read it, act like you're at a party. You know, they start playing Nelly's It's Gettin Hot in Here and someone invariable says what a cool song it is, but you can't really say anything about how that song was interesting the first bajillion times you heard it.....Act like that.
__________________________________________________________________________
You miss a day blogging. No time for a serious hard-hitting post. Hits are down. What do you do? Engage in the blogosphere's oldest vice: Link dropping!!!
But that's just one of the mortal vices of blogging. What are the others?
Rusty Shackleford presents: The Seven Deadly Sins of Blogging: a brief guide.*
1) The Link Drop Post: Steven Taylor and I prove kindrid souls on this one. Don't think this one works? Do you actually believe Glenn Reynolds was born Satan's right-hand man or had to work on it?
2) Search Terms Post: Google not treating you right? BRD has a full discourse on the merits of porn and conspiracy theories. Sure fire way to up the ol' sitemeter .....and send your soul right to Beelzebub's dominion.
3) The Re-post Post: Had a popular post in the past? Hits down? Ace re-introduces us to one of his greatest hit-jobs. Remember, this sin sometimes counts double.
4) The Blogroll Post: Get bloggers attention fast! The Llama Butchers are ordered to do 5 Hail Mary's and an Our Father for jeapordizing their immortal souls.
5) The Breaking News Post: The blogger ethos requires a link to the first person breaking the story. MH King, Amanda Doerty, Jeff Quinton, James....I say to you repent!!
6) The Caption Contest Post: Win the caption, get a link. See how this works? This sin seems to be reserved for Fridays. Shame on you Kevin!
7) The Recipricol Link Post: Want to up your TTLB Ecosystem rating? Easy. Start an 'Alliance' of 'like-minded bloggers' to recipricate links. (via Commissar) Jessica and Boi From Troi are warned that this mortal sin will not go unpunished!!
In the Name of He Who Rules the Blogosphere I Warn All of You to Repent! Any other Bloggers who engage in these sins have been forwarned. Hell-fire and brimstone await if you do not change your wicked ways!
*Mia Culpa. Yes, I have been guilty of all these vile acts in the past. I have seen the light! I once was lost, but now I'm saved.....

Morning Editorial. check (finally!!).
Hey, didn't post until AFTER meetings ended. How did they go? Splendid. And by 'splendid' I mean 'ended early'!!

WaPo on Jessica Cutler: Genius, Martyr
Just wait til
Ace and
Bill hear about this. Via
nTodd who dropped a comment to me comes word that Jessica Cutler is back in the limelight. Before I go on, can I just ask how Washingtonienne is 'news', but the fact that John Kerry was never in Cambodia is 'not news' according WaPo?
WaPo (subscription):
Jessica's blog (short for "Web log") was the online diary she had been posting anonymously to amuse herself and her closest girlfriends. In it, she detailed the peccadilloes of the men she said were her six current sexual partners, including a married Bush administration official who met her in hotel rooms and gave her envelopes of cash; a senator's staff member who helped hire her, then later bedded her; and another man who liked to spank and be spanked.
Wait, the nation's premier politcal news source is talking about spanking???? More in extended entry. But I warn you, this reads like a lurid novel.
Rob, James, David, Eric Scoles, and (shock) Kevin already on the case.
UPDATE: Why is it that when we think Washingtonienne or Jessica Cutler we think of Bill at INDC? The Llamma Butchers are officially Munuvians, and they get the ball rolling right! And when Jeff Goldstein thinks of sex-for-money blogging, he also thinks of Bill.

"She posed for Playboy in a pictorial that will run this fall, just in time for the erection."
Makes perfect sense considering both the subject and the horrible writing of this piece.

"Soon, the answer to that question would be writ large, not only across Washington, but around the world."
Oh, I don't know - I'm willing to wager that 99% of the world doesn't have a clue who the hell she is.
Regardless, I'm just glad they told me what a blog was - I mean, given that Jessica's story is being writ large around the world, I must be the last person to get this whole blog thing.

Probably overkill to point this out, but...
Your excerpt from the Washington Post article mentioned Republicans twice in just a couple of grafs ("...a *married* Bush Administration staffer" and that she worked for "Republican" Mike DeWine of Ohio). But when I see wire-service stories on corrupt, now-outed New Jersey governor McGreevey, the name of his party is never mentioned.
But I'm sure this is just coincidence.
Posted by: sf at August 17, 2004 10:08 AM (cK2TE)

SF: Hmm.... it seems to me that every single story I heard about McGreevey took great pains to repeatedly establish that he was a Democrat.
Cutler worked for a republican, so it's natural (especially in view of the current armed-camp mentality between the parties -- traceable directly to Newt Gingrich's "never surrender" attitude, I might add) that she would -- er --
consort primarily with Republican men. And again, in view of the current climate, it's practically required that you situate everyone you talk about somewhere on the political spectrum as soon as they're named. Otherwise, you're accused of being "policitally correct" or "biased" by the side opposed to the person named. You're damned if you do, and mocked if you don't.
Anyway, any whore in DC will tell you that Republicans are much kinkier than Democrats (which, in most stories that mention that nugget, is taken as a compliment to the republicans).
