Troll Hunting
I've
already mentioned that I forwarded some e-mails to various law enforcement agencies, including one that threatened the President's life. I also e-mailed several host companies in the UK letting them know some of their subscribers are violating terms of usage. I really didn't expect to get anything back, but the webmaster over at NTL got back to me within hours and is busy hunting down one of the culprits. Thanks for everyone's input and advice.
On a related note, Jane pointed me to this great article by American Warmonger on how to hunt trolls the right way. The good news is that no dogs, tree stands, or orange vests are required! One advantage of MT over Blogger is that it records IP addresses of everyone who comments.

Point #1: What if I
like hunting from a tree stand, wearing an orange vest? (Actually, it's a blaze orange camo anorak, or parka)
Point #2: As a Blogger blogger (as opposed to a Blogspot blogger, which is a different beast entirely), I don't use Blogger comments because they're still substandard to Haloscan, which also provides Trackbacks and has been around for a relatively long time. And with Haloscan, I have your IP address, Rusty. [evil grin here]

Hi Rusty,
Some of the UK bloggers seem to have a personal investment in flaming me....see the blogs on Kenneth Bigly...the one with over 300+ posts.
Seems they are all attacking me for my views on the war in Iraq. That's okay, I'm from NYC originally, and can defend myself. Where it gets scarey though, is one poster who calls himself "Satan" and says that I am HIS.
Maybe I should watch what I say, since you said that ISP's, email addy's are easy to obtain. Not that I have anything to hide, I just don't want to get a threat from any of these wackos.
What if any of them are from the Mid East and are reading our comments?
Scarey, huh?

Yeah, pretty scary stuff Laura. I saw some of the comments about you, but they mostly centered on your crack about nuking them all or something. Personally, I've never minded when some caring Christian folk tell me I'm not forgiving enough or whatever.
Boyd, yeah I know about the haloscan IP thingy. I guess it's just the risk I take when I comment at people's site. I trust in their decency not to out me.

Yeah, I'm a big girl and I don't mind being attacked or flamed, but when they start saying shit like "I am Satan, and your soul is mine"....stuff like that, it begins to worry me, that maybe I have gone over the threshold.
Surely, there are others with the "nuke em mentality" that have said much worse than I have, but have disappeared from the blog, only to make their presence known once or twice. I, however, have managed to stick around, thus their attempts at making me leave the blog are futile, making them even more pissed off!
I don't see anyone saying what they would've done about the war on terrorism, only attacking every word I've typed. Others now, have read the comments and are joining the bandwagon, even if they agree, I seem to be the easy target lately...hmmm...because I have identified myself as a female, so I'm "easy pickins"??
Who knows, who cares....well I do, if it turns out that someone really is out to "get me".
Thanks for listening.

Jane,
You never forget your first. Love ya' babe.
Rusty,
I've got a good suspicion that some of these guys are of arab decent. Not many non-arab or islamic types use the word "halal" in regular conversation frequently. So when we beat them back, the terrorists lose!...just a thought.
Thanks for the shout out. And remember, the offer still stands for any and all who need a hand. (Network security is actually my day job.)
Posted by: Jeremy at October 12, 2004 02:41 PM (farnf)
7
Hey Jeremy, who has used "halal"? Most of the obnoxious people who have attacked me seem to be from the UK, and they are hell bent on trashing their Blair for joining forces with Bush in his invasion of Iraq.
I just received a very nice email from a British gal, apologizing for those guys, and says they're not really representative of the folks in UK. She said she was very enraged at their attacks of me, even though she may disagree on some of my views, she wanted to let me know she respected me, praised me for hanging in there and speaking my mind without fear of reprisal, and wanted to let me know the people in the UK aren't all that bad, just that some are idiots.
Nice lady. I've received a few others too. Too bad they are being scared off by the likes of COOgarUK and Cas, to name a few.
Good night.

Laura,
I doubt very much you have received such emails, who are you trying to kid?
when us over in the UK are mostly all thinking the same way!!!
People always the use the old trick of 'I have support' people are sending me supportive emails.
The problem is that you talk out of your backside and it enrages people.
You are typical of the Americans that have been blinded by their government and made to believe what you want to believe.
No I am not a what you call that racist comment people keep making,...oh yea 'Raghead' and not I am not male I am very much female and I am white and one of the ones that are sick of your 'nuke' mentality which you still do not deny or take back.
Nuke em...
Posted by: Law_Raw at October 13, 2004 03:43 AM (4YWe7)

Just look how that sounds...
Such a controversial blog is going to attract people from all places.. and you shouldn't let them think that Americans have this NUKE mentality it is far too dangerous!!
You are saying this to the ordinary Iraqi people who could be reading this and thinking.. They don't give two shits for us really do they!!
Then get all scared and start making little Osamas!

Laura,
Mine was from some college in Japan it appears. However, it turns out it's an international college. The guy made reference to polish kielbasa not being "halal". Sounded like an arab student in Japan to me.
I think your breed of troll more closely resembles what some call the "soccer hooligan". Mosly just a bunch of pompus asses and not limited to Europe. They usually run in packs.
Law_Raw,
...blinded by their government and made to believe what you want to believe.
I'm sure you just mistyped this but, how exactly does the government FORCE free will? Perhaps you meant to say "made to believe what they want you to believe? (I'm not trying to insult you but some extra time on grammar could have done you some good.)
One last thing: the beauty of a "blog" is that you don't have to be politically correct. In fact, the opposite is implied in many cases. Although "nuke em" may be a highly unpopular solution, it is one that would be successful: No more people, no more problem. But what would I know about what "blowing up ragheads" would really do? After all, I'm just another stupid American Warmonger. You on the other hand have information sources that are so much better, right? (sarcasm implied)

Law Raw, don't have to prove anything to you really, but I have several emails I can forward to you if you don't believe me. MissBrit is one of them, who formerly posted on here, but unfortunately, she is afraid of being attacked for her views.
She said not everyone in the UK is like that and she is ashamed that people would gang up on me for my views, instead of discussing it intelligently.
She's actually Scottish descent but is tired of people representing the whole bunch as "UK". She says that a lot of Brits think Americans and stupid and being misled by our govt.
I would like to know who the British feel is capable of running their country, if they don't like Blair? If Blair didn't enter Iraq with us, would they still like him or would they find another reason to attack him?
Wait till the terrorists hit your soil, Law Raw. You may think differently. So far, I am the only one who is personally involved in 9/11, knowing victims in the attacks and having friends that lost loved ones there as well.
You all can say and think what you want, because you have not personally been involved and are talking out of your "arses", easy to do when you can sit back in your English gardens, drink tea and eat crumpets and dare to come on here and attack us Americans.
Shame this has turned into a UK vs US debate, and for the ones that aren't from the UK but agree with them, I put you in their group as well.

Rusty..... I know you must have thought of this and maybe I missed it... Why didn't you ad a CHAT room to this enormous site you have here. Would save you email overflow. You could do it as a sign up in order to chat... With confirmation email addy as to collect ISP's. Too Hot for the UK: Steyn's Censored Column
Mark Steyn's publishers at the Telegraph thought that readers in the UK couldn't handle this piece of solidly British advice.
Here's a tidbit.
I’d written about Kenneth Bigley, seized with two American colleagues but unlike them not beheaded immediately. Instead, sensing that they could exploit potential differences within “the coalition of the willing”, for three weeks the Islamists played a cat-and-mouse game with Mr Bigley’s life, in which Fleet Street, the British public, governments in London and Dublin and Islamic lobby groups in the United Kingdom were far too willing to participate. As I always say, in this war the point is not whether you’re sad about the dead people, but what you’re prepared to do about it. What “Britain” – from Ken Bigley’s brother to the Foreign Secretary – did was make it more likely that other infidels will meet his fate.
It gets better from there. I echo his sentiments that we do not honor the memory of Kenneth Bigly by mourning for him, we honor his memory by hunting down and killing those that murdered him in cold blood. (Hat tip:
James Joyner)

I'm a Telegraph reader. Not a bad paper, probably the best broadsheet in the UK. Pundits such as Steyn are nothing but self publicists. Even though Barbara Amiel, excuse Lady Black is no longer there, Steyn still carries her torch. At the risk of being banned I will state Steyns hatred of anything Arabic or Muslim is comparable to Hitler's hatred of the Jews. And of course he is also never wrong, has an opinion on everything, in other words, he's a loud mouthed shmuck.
Never the less, I read his piece with interest. Nothing there really, it's what you would expect from the man. I would suggest that the next time another person is taken hostage (God forbid) Steyn offers to take his place and show's us how he would face such a grizzly end.

Hey Rusty, why the light blogging today?
Sorry, I had to clean out my inbox. I probably read like 100 messages, banned at least 5 readers, and deleted about 30 or so comments. I'll blog more tomorrow, I promise. Also, if you sent me an e-mail and I didn't respond I apologize--another victim of the collateral damage of a Google bomb. Traffic seems to be getting back to normal so I'll respond to any new e-mails you send my way.

Reader Love Mail and Help
I've been getting a lot of 'love mail' as of late, and thought I'd share one of the comments with you. Some of it is too sick to pass along, some predictable, and one that I forwarded to the FBI. Maybe a techie out there could help me figure something out: is there an easy way to locate a person through their IP address?? Not necessarily their physical address, but maybe their ISP? How do I do that?
Ok, here's some reader mail:

Try entering the IP address at
Sam Spade. Some sites will give you more info than others, but it's a very good start.

Sam Spade is good, generally speaking. Keep in mind that if the person is a wizard, they will be masking the actual IP address. If you trust the information you have, by all means, report them to their ISP. Good luck!

Hmm... After you have forwarded the email to the Feds and if SamSpade has been helpful, be sure to forward this link (which I found at JYB and have been abusing) to the next "Ahmed".

Go find "geektools" and then download a trial version of "traceroute" (you'll find a program link available or just go goole that last name)...then purchase the program if you find it as handy as I do.
You can't find a person by the actual physical address (a good thing, when you think about it) but you can locate the I.S.P. for an I.P.A. and then complain to the I.P. Administrator.
I've had a few of the more ugly, upsetting sort of comments and took that course of action, and in one case, telephoned the I.P. Admiministrator when I didn't get a response and made a very stern verbal complaint -- was asked to quote some of the most abnormal of the comments, did, and the Administrator became concerned at that point...in one case, the I.P. identified the actual user of a business network on an I.P., so it was clear who wrote what.
I also have site logs (you may also, from your own hosting service) and those have made it possible to track the actual time of the visit to my site compared with the time posted of the corresponding comments, and, the site logs remain with my own hosting service on their server (as all do, meaning, it's server based log content until you download a copy but the originals remain on the server unless someone with server access deletes them), so the content is incontestible within a reasonable deliberation.
So, all this means: you complain to the I.P. that is providing service to the creepy commentor, and then you complain next or mutually to your local police if the comments are threatening. Someone threatening another person's life is something I'd consider should be reported to your local police.
Then give them what they need to determine who made the threat.
I've had one of those already, too, so it's not a pleasant thing to experience, I realize.

"geektools" is a site that lists all sorts of trace helps and things to use to better understand information over the internet.
"Traceroute" is a program...offers a trail download and then you purchase a copy if you find it's helping you. I recommend "traceroute" because it not only traces an I.P.A., but it locates the area where the message originated and also shows you all the hops it can "trace" that the message took to reach your site, or you. A very good program.

Just to let you guys know, I used some of the aforementioned tools. Some of the most vile comments were coming from the UK. So what? The good thing side (of mostly bad) hate speech laws is that this kind of activity is illegal in Mother England. So I sent off a nasty letter to the guys ISP asking them to revoke the guys service and forward to authorities. (Not from the letter I showed, but from even more vile stuff)
Will it work? No idea.

Note to Readers/Friends: G-mail vs. Yahoo

As you can see, My Pet Jawa is growing up. Most of the 374 e-mails that I found in my mailbox today are the comments you leave which are forwarded to my old Yahoo account. I've asked friends to start e-mailing me on my G-mail account because at some point it just becomes unmanagable to sort through 300+ e-mails. Here's the dilema: since I use Yahoo messenger I am alerted whenever a message comes into the Inbox--I love this feature of Yahoo mail. On the other hand, last Friday I got slammed with well overn 45k hits and 100k page views--this translates into a lot of comments and a lot of e-mails. After awhile I just tune out and ignore e-mails in my Yahoo box. On normal days it's not that big of a problem, but when the Google bomb goes off my Yahoo account becomes a graveyard of unread messages (which is why sometimes I get right back to readers/blog friends and other times I never reply).
My G-mail account is much more managable. Only people I have e-mailed or who take the time to look up my e-mail account on this page write me there. The disadvantage? No way to let me know when I get a new e-mail--I have to refresh the page just to check. When a blog friend or reader e-mails me with a breaking news tip I sometimes don't get the message for awhile.
So, here's the question: does any one know of a G-mail plug in that will notify you when a new message is received? That feature would be very helpful.

Actually, we're talking about two different things, Jeff. I was talking about a Firefox extension, but it appears you're talking about a Google-created Gmail notifier that sits in the system tray on Win2K or WinXP (and presumably Win2K3 Server, but they don't list it explictly).
And the reason I wasn't talking about the same one as you, Jeff, was because I wasn't aware it existed! Thanks for mentioning it. It can be found at toolbar dot google dot com slash gmail-helper. I tried including a link, but apparently google dot com is considered questionable content.
Go figger.

Electoral-Vote.com Hacked?
I snapped this photo from
electoral-vote.com earlier. It seems that they got hacked. The map shows a clear Bush lead, but if you look at the total it shows Kerry every electoral vote.
Charles over at LGF theorizes that the site got hacked. My theory? Let's just say I'm not ruling out a prank by the leftist asshat who runs the site. Note to Charles: the person/persons who run the site make Michael Moore look mainstream. Just click around the links some and you'll see why. I also have an earlier post on the site's moonbattishness here.

I found another poll today that 10,000 people took and over 85% of the people who responded to the poll voted for Bush. I think it was called "If the election were held today, who would you vote for?" Since there were names on there I've never heard of, I'm sure it wasn't hacked
or broken into like hundreds of offices and places throughout the country in the past week when it came to the Republican campaigns offices in every state. I hope they catch the bastards that are doing this criminal behavior and throw them in jail for a long, long time - just goes to show you how desperate Kerry followers are...
Tomorrow night should be quite interesting.

Ummm, isn't it possible that the 538 Kerry thing was an honest mistake? It's interesting to me that so many people target this guy for essentially just posting a bunch of Zogby, Opinion Dynamics, and other polls. I mean, what's the big deal? The polls exist whether or not electoral-vote.com posts them.

No idea what happened. Just found out the server went down. See what happens when you move to a more powerful server with a bigger pipe.

I love your shameless expropriation of a line from the best of all Mike Myers films. It was the one where he unveiled about half of the material that he was later to use in his other films.

The utes of America are getting me down
Light posting--stupid job wants me to
work for my money! Just graded tests. Only half of students could identify the Attorney General of the US. One student thinks the Sec State is 'Colin Pile'. These are all Juniors and Seniors. I've decided to stop passing out voter registration cards to all my students. Seriously.

I used to laugh off people who made fun of "man on the street" interviews where folks...on the street...were asked about politicians - they always resulted in pretty strange - and scary - answers.
While I can't say I agree with not passing out the voter registration cards, I can see why you're at this level of frustration.

I'd imagine the student that wrote down "Colin Pile" was making a poltical statement. Then again, that student doesn't know how to spell Colon so maybe that is why they are in a political science class rather than a pulic relations class.

Kos flunks my Introduction to American National Government Class
Note to my students: the 'President of Senate' doesn't really do anything. He doesn't even
preside. When he does show up, he bangs the gavel and then gives it to a Senator chosen to preside for the day.

What movie did the Veepbate most remind you of?
Wall Street, Cheney as Gecko;
Rocky, it's a draw;
Rocky III, Cheney as Clubber Lang;
Star Wars, Cheney finds Edward's lack of faith in the Dark Side of the Force disturbing;
The Empire Strikes Back, evil wins--but only
temporarily;
Return of the Jedi, Cheney takes off mask;
Spaceballs, Cheney as Dark Helmut;
Turner and Hooch, aka Cheney and Edwards;
Happy Gilmore;
Godzilla vs. Bambi;
Terminator, and not the gay part 3;
The Godfather;
Godfather II;
Vision Quest, VP wrestler barely outmaneuvers skilled opponent;
Jaws, Edwards as the Mayor;
Alive, Cheney eats Edwards. A little salty;
Memento;
Being John Malkovich, puppetmaster he aint;
The Day After, Cheney as da bomb;
Used Cars, Edwards as Rudy Russo.
And what movie did the debate remind me of the most? The Big Sleep.

hahahahahaha all funny, all true. So see Rusty, you can make a joke without trying; it's the trying that gets you in trouble. The big sleep is right, so I just switched to "Primal Fear" and that kept me awake. Still have not watched my taped copy or typed it up, don't think I will, either because when I read "SLAMMED" and the word for word quote under it that Cheney said to Edwards at the end, noting this is the first time I have ever met you, was enough for me. Back to sleep.

Well, it isn't a corolation (sp) to a movie as far as the way it played out, but I personally see Cheney more as the Godfather (and he shares the initials "DC" with Don Corleone) and I see Edwards more as either Peter Pan or Robin the Boy Wonder. Who would YOU rather have advising and working with the President, The Godfather or Peter Pan?

Posted by: Brian B at October 06, 2004 01:06 PM (OnnW3)

NO! Steve, no way you can convince me of empowering the llama; I hate the name and you know it. Brian, they are Dream Walker, Conquistador, Silver, Bucci, Black Ice (Shadow), Elton for the males. Misti, Mocha, Sparkler, Sno Pastel, and StellaLuna. I only named Silver and Shadow and those are just their nick names. Conquistador, my major stud, died suddenly in July from one of the aortic arteries burst. I only got him studded to one female. All females were supposed to be pregnant before they got here but only two have been born. The boys (Mr C and Dream Walker) were only yearlings. Now Dream Walker and Bucci - my mini stud are more than ready to go and I have tried to hand breed them. Not exactly sure who may or may not be pregnant by those two. But the whole herd is for sale anyway. Answer your question, Brian? :-)

Glenn Reynolds income watch
Holy schneike! You mean people actually get paid to do this?? And here I've been giving it away for free!
Ok, so Glenn Reynolds gets $4k a month for a premium blogad.
His 'second slot' blogad goes for $2k a month (x2).
For 'regular' blogads you pay $1k a month (x5)
Pop quiz cowboy: How much does Glenn Reynolds get paid to blog a month?
Answer: $13k a month!!!
What change since August 4th, when I first ran the numbers? Reynolds raises his slot one price by a grand a month, and this is enough to make up for losing one advertiser in the regular slot. Total revenue change: none.

Little Miss Attila Scores Medved Interview
I've met Michael Medved on a number of occasions. No need to bore you with the details here. Of course, I never thought to open my piehole and ask him some really interesting questions.
Little Miss Attila, on the other hand, does just that. But let me get one thing straight:
there are Jews in Hollywood? Wonders never cease to amaze!

Yeah, yeah

It's interesting to reflect that a large component of the development of motion pictures (both as commerce and as an art form) had to do with Jews being locked out of so many other industries and lines of work. It's as if, in the first half of the 20th Century, a group of Eastern European immigrants found themself here, and realized they had to earn a living. So they invented their own line of work.
As a resident of L.A. I have that LA/New York mindset and am always shocked anew when I hear the real statistics about the proportion of Jews in the population at large: it sounds like such a tiny number, compared to my own circle, which is probably 45% Jewish.
My favorite little detail about the evolution of Old Jewish Money is when some of the newly wealthy entertainment people wanted to join a country club, but couldn't join the ones dominated by WASPs. My recollection is that it was Harpo Marx who argued that, no, it wouldn't be ethical to exclude non-Jews from the new club they were creating at the time: that would be bringing themselves down to the bigots' level.
I say all this, of course, as a blue-collar WASP (though one who converted to Catholicism a few years ago for complex reasons).
