Troll Hunting

I've already mentioned that I forwarded some e-mails to various law enforcement agencies, including one that threatened the President's life. I also e-mailed several host companies in the UK letting them know some of their subscribers are violating terms of usage. I really didn't expect to get anything back, but the webmaster over at NTL got back to me within hours and is busy hunting down one of the culprits. Thanks for everyone's input and advice.

On a related note, Jane pointed me to this great article by American Warmonger on how to hunt trolls the right way. The good news is that no dogs, tree stands, or orange vests are required! One advantage of MT over Blogger is that it records IP addresses of everyone who comments.

1 Point #1: What if I like hunting from a tree stand, wearing an orange vest? (Actually, it's a blaze orange camo anorak, or parka) Point #2: As a Blogger blogger (as opposed to a Blogspot blogger, which is a different beast entirely), I don't use Blogger comments because they're still substandard to Haloscan, which also provides Trackbacks and has been around for a relatively long time. And with Haloscan, I have your IP address, Rusty. [evil grin here]

2 Hi Rusty, Some of the UK bloggers seem to have a personal investment in flaming me....see the blogs on Kenneth Bigly...the one with over 300+ posts. Seems they are all attacking me for my views on the war in Iraq. That's okay, I'm from NYC originally, and can defend myself. Where it gets scarey though, is one poster who calls himself "Satan" and says that I am HIS. Maybe I should watch what I say, since you said that ISP's, email addy's are easy to obtain. Not that I have anything to hide, I just don't want to get a threat from any of these wackos. What if any of them are from the Mid East and are reading our comments? Scarey, huh?

3 Yeah, pretty scary stuff Laura. I saw some of the comments about you, but they mostly centered on your crack about nuking them all or something. Personally, I've never minded when some caring Christian folk tell me I'm not forgiving enough or whatever. Boyd, yeah I know about the haloscan IP thingy. I guess it's just the risk I take when I comment at people's site. I trust in their decency not to out me.

4 Yeah, I'm a big girl and I don't mind being attacked or flamed, but when they start saying shit like "I am Satan, and your soul is mine"....stuff like that, it begins to worry me, that maybe I have gone over the threshold. Surely, there are others with the "nuke em mentality" that have said much worse than I have, but have disappeared from the blog, only to make their presence known once or twice. I, however, have managed to stick around, thus their attempts at making me leave the blog are futile, making them even more pissed off! I don't see anyone saying what they would've done about the war on terrorism, only attacking every word I've typed. Others now, have read the comments and are joining the bandwagon, even if they agree, I seem to be the easy target lately...hmmm...because I have identified myself as a female, so I'm "easy pickins"?? Who knows, who cares....well I do, if it turns out that someone really is out to "get me". Thanks for listening.

5 Actually I was Jeremy's first commenter. He wrote a post called "She Popped My Cherry" and I've had a special fondness for him since then.

6 Jane, You never forget your first. Love ya' babe. Rusty, I've got a good suspicion that some of these guys are of arab decent. Not many non-arab or islamic types use the word "halal" in regular conversation frequently. So when we beat them back, the terrorists lose!...just a thought. Thanks for the shout out. And remember, the offer still stands for any and all who need a hand. (Network security is actually my day job.)

7 Hey Jeremy, who has used "halal"? Most of the obnoxious people who have attacked me seem to be from the UK, and they are hell bent on trashing their Blair for joining forces with Bush in his invasion of Iraq. I just received a very nice email from a British gal, apologizing for those guys, and says they're not really representative of the folks in UK. She said she was very enraged at their attacks of me, even though she may disagree on some of my views, she wanted to let me know she respected me, praised me for hanging in there and speaking my mind without fear of reprisal, and wanted to let me know the people in the UK aren't all that bad, just that some are idiots. Nice lady. I've received a few others too. Too bad they are being scared off by the likes of COOgarUK and Cas, to name a few. Good night.

8 Laura, I doubt very much you have received such emails, who are you trying to kid? when us over in the UK are mostly all thinking the same way!!! People always the use the old trick of 'I have support' people are sending me supportive emails. The problem is that you talk out of your backside and it enrages people. You are typical of the Americans that have been blinded by their government and made to believe what you want to believe. No I am not a what you call that racist comment people keep making,...oh yea 'Raghead' and not I am not male I am very much female and I am white and one of the ones that are sick of your 'nuke' mentality which you still do not deny or take back. Nuke em...

9 Just look how that sounds... Such a controversial blog is going to attract people from all places.. and you shouldn't let them think that Americans have this NUKE mentality it is far too dangerous!! You are saying this to the ordinary Iraqi people who could be reading this and thinking.. They don't give two shits for us really do they!! Then get all scared and start making little Osamas!

10 Laura, Mine was from some college in Japan it appears. However, it turns out it's an international college. The guy made reference to polish kielbasa not being "halal". Sounded like an arab student in Japan to me. I think your breed of troll more closely resembles what some call the "soccer hooligan". Mosly just a bunch of pompus asses and not limited to Europe. They usually run in packs. Law_Raw, ...blinded by their government and made to believe what you want to believe. I'm sure you just mistyped this but, how exactly does the government FORCE free will? Perhaps you meant to say "made to believe what they want you to believe? (I'm not trying to insult you but some extra time on grammar could have done you some good.) One last thing: the beauty of a "blog" is that you don't have to be politically correct. In fact, the opposite is implied in many cases. Although "nuke em" may be a highly unpopular solution, it is one that would be successful: No more people, no more problem. But what would I know about what "blowing up ragheads" would really do? After all, I'm just another stupid American Warmonger. You on the other hand have information sources that are so much better, right? (sarcasm implied)

11 Rusty, is there a prob with posting? I'm getting error messages again.

Posted by: Laura at October 13, 2004 11:32 AM (ptOpl)

12 Law Raw, don't have to prove anything to you really, but I have several emails I can forward to you if you don't believe me. MissBrit is one of them, who formerly posted on here, but unfortunately, she is afraid of being attacked for her views. She said not everyone in the UK is like that and she is ashamed that people would gang up on me for my views, instead of discussing it intelligently. She's actually Scottish descent but is tired of people representing the whole bunch as "UK". She says that a lot of Brits think Americans and stupid and being misled by our govt. I would like to know who the British feel is capable of running their country, if they don't like Blair? If Blair didn't enter Iraq with us, would they still like him or would they find another reason to attack him? Wait till the terrorists hit your soil, Law Raw. You may think differently. So far, I am the only one who is personally involved in 9/11, knowing victims in the attacks and having friends that lost loved ones there as well. You all can say and think what you want, because you have not personally been involved and are talking out of your "arses", easy to do when you can sit back in your English gardens, drink tea and eat crumpets and dare to come on here and attack us Americans. Shame this has turned into a UK vs US debate, and for the ones that aren't from the UK but agree with them, I put you in their group as well.

13 Rusty..... I know you must have thought of this and maybe I missed it... Why didn't you ad a CHAT room to this enormous site you have here. Would save you email overflow. You could do it as a sign up in order to chat... With confirmation email addy as to collect ISP's. I KNOW there would be chaos sometimes.. do to issues of discussion, but also give those of us with big ideas and big mouths room to do so... C'mon wut do ya think???? Andrea Let me be room monitor hehehe

Posted by: Andrea at October 13, 2004 11:53 AM (AaBEz)

14 A chat room would be great! But then, we'd never get anything else done, now would we? You can be the monitor Andrea, and when the UK bloggers get too insulting, we can "toss" them out just like they do in the AOL chats! hehe.

15 LAWRAW: You're not fooling anyone. Now adjust your veil and shut up.
