The Taliban did not fight the Soviets - they watched from Pakistan and came later.
The muhjadeen fought the Soviets and the were mostly homegrown Afghani's - AQ and the foreign fighters fought seperately from the locals - they didn't like each other - and the locals saw the foreigners as ineffective & obnoxious.
I don't want to give these scums bags credit they don't deserve.

There's a great deal of confusion about that old Soviet affair. The Soviet military had NEVER been ordered to occupy the Afghanistan. Had they been they would have done so, no worries.
