I've been getting a lot of 'love mail' as of late, and thought I'd share one of the comments with you. Some of it is too sick to pass along, some predictable, and one that I forwarded to the FBI. Maybe a techie out there could help me figure something out: is there an easy way to locate a person through their IP address?? Not necessarily their physical address, but maybe their ISP? How do I do that?

Try entering the IP address at
Sam Spade. Some sites will give you more info than others, but it's a very good start.

Sam Spade is good, generally speaking. Keep in mind that if the person is a wizard, they will be masking the actual IP address. If you trust the information you have, by all means, report them to their ISP. Good luck!

Hmm... After you have forwarded the email to the Feds and if SamSpade has been helpful, be sure to forward this link (which I found at JYB and have been abusing) to the next "Ahmed".

I think
Jeremy gives us a step by step analysis here. I'll see if he can stop by.

I know people in IT who can help you with that if you'd like - just let me know and I'll pass on the information.

Go find "geektools" and then download a trial version of "traceroute" (you'll find a program link available or just go goole that last name)...then purchase the program if you find it as handy as I do.
You can't find a person by the actual physical address (a good thing, when you think about it) but you can locate the I.S.P. for an I.P.A. and then complain to the I.P. Administrator.
I've had a few of the more ugly, upsetting sort of comments and took that course of action, and in one case, telephoned the I.P. Admiministrator when I didn't get a response and made a very stern verbal complaint -- was asked to quote some of the most abnormal of the comments, did, and the Administrator became concerned at that point...in one case, the I.P. identified the actual user of a business network on an I.P., so it was clear who wrote what.
I also have site logs (you may also, from your own hosting service) and those have made it possible to track the actual time of the visit to my site compared with the time posted of the corresponding comments, and, the site logs remain with my own hosting service on their server (as all do, meaning, it's server based log content until you download a copy but the originals remain on the server unless someone with server access deletes them), so the content is incontestible within a reasonable deliberation.
So, all this means: you complain to the I.P. that is providing service to the creepy commentor, and then you complain next or mutually to your local police if the comments are threatening. Someone threatening another person's life is something I'd consider should be reported to your local police.
Then give them what they need to determine who made the threat.
I've had one of those already, too, so it's not a pleasant thing to experience, I realize.

"geektools" is a site that lists all sorts of trace helps and things to use to better understand information over the internet.
"Traceroute" is a program...offers a trail download and then you purchase a copy if you find it's helping you. I recommend "traceroute" because it not only traces an I.P.A., but it locates the area where the message originated and also shows you all the hops it can "trace" that the message took to reach your site, or you. A very good program.

Just to let you guys know, I used some of the aforementioned tools. Some of the most vile comments were coming from the UK. So what? The good thing side (of mostly bad) hate speech laws is that this kind of activity is illegal in Mother England. So I sent off a nasty letter to the guys ISP asking them to revoke the guys service and forward to authorities. (Not from the letter I showed, but from even more vile stuff)
Will it work? No idea.

RUSTY,
Gawd I hope I wasn't one of those folks you turned over for ISP trace. When I told CAS for me and her to go out into the parking lot and only one of us was going to come back in... ME ... was my attempt to let her know that I had had enough of her attack's in a FUNNY kinda way. Unlike some I have a sense of HUMOR... Having been a cop, and Navy officer I tend to let my COP mentalilty over run... jeeeeesh

Shit. Never mind,Rusty, I had to "click here" to go to the page...can't scroll down anymore, too many articles now to be contained on the first page.
Found it, thanks anyway.
