Commissar's response to terrorists? F**k You!

To Spoons: What the hell does Commissar living his life have to do with Sep. 10th thinking? It is possible to be both vigilant in the face of our enemies and live our lives normally. I just don't see the connection between someone's personal activities (such as going to work) and his vigilence?

1 To be clear, my use of the F word was directed at terrorists, not Spoons.

2 Rusty, why do I suspect you didn't read all of the links? This and this, in particular. I have no objection to Der Commissar's going about his life. I object to his mockery of Annie Jacobsen, or anyone else acting to be vigilant about potential threats.

3 I understand your difference of opinion on the Terro-skies stories that you linked. That's cool, and you know that I would rather err on the side of caution and offend some people than err on the side of civility and have people die. But in my mind, 9/10 thinking is DANGEROUS and is worse than saying eff-you. So, I just object to giving the Commissar the 9/10 award for THAT particular post. It seems to me that the Commissar has learned from the Israelis. That is, in the face of incredible fears and dangers--celebrate life. Live.

4 Still think you're misconstruing the post, Rusty. It's all well and good to go about living your life. But part of living your life should be keeping vigilant about threats. Mocking people who do that shouldn't be. It's not just that the Commissar and I disagree about the Jacobsen story -- although I think that the evidence strongly supports a conclusion that the Jacobsens acted reasonably. Even if the Jacobsens had overreacted, though, the attacks on them were completely uncalled for, and make us less safe.

5 I haven't read all the posts, but I have to agree with and amend Spoons' last comment: what he seems to be saying is that "living your life" has a different definition post-9/11, and I don't think The Commissar would disagree.

6 I think its about keeping a sense of perspective, a sense of humor and a sense of COMRADEry, so I have to weigh in with the Commissar and Rusty here, but honestly, I would weigh in with them in most any circumstances, that's just the way we do it in Brooklyn. (Did I win run-on-sentence-of-the-week?)

7 I find that the perfect compromise is to be a paranoid in denial. A cocktail of equal parts dexetrine, valium and Stolichnya helps immensely. (Jane, if not the winner, you've made Letterman's Top 10 List, although we love you anyway because you write with style, grace and power, while not usually running overlong clauses into the same tortured sentence, unlike some of us who can't help ourselves.)
