Happy Valentine's Day!!

I'm off to make sure Mrs. Shackleford is a happy camper. Let me just leave you with this history lesson.

Can you tell me which factoid reminds me of the Religion of Peace? From Catholic.org:

Valentine was a holy priest in Rome, who, with St. Marius and his family, assisted the martyrs in the persecution under Claudius II. He was apprehended, and sent by the emperor to the prefect of Rome, who, on finding all his promises to make him renounce his faith in effectual, commended him to be beaten with clubs, and afterwards, to be beheaded, which was executed on February 14, about the year 270.
Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.....

1 Ah, maybe it's an "Italian thing", but why do I always think of the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" instead of a day for lovers? In fact, my dear, departed Dad was born Feb. 14th; he would've been 92.

6 Actually there are a few stories about "Saint Valentine." The one I choose to use is on my site, much sweeter. Rusty, I'm thinking Dr.S has no sweetheart...;-(

9 Hi, Rusty. It's TBF, or as you call me, BFH from smokefilleddoom. My wife found your site. Lovely place to visit and I see you get a lot more traffic. I'll try to drop by for needling once every so often. Oh, and the whole thing with Catholicism being the "religion of peace." Just read more history. Really. You know the highlights - think the Crusades, various Inquisitions and the like - but you've also got exciting moments like Renaissance popes riding off to war. Yes, very peaceful. The Church was a much sweeter, gentler thing before they seized power...and, really, since they've lost power in the secular sense.

10 Someone living in the past. Are the Mongols still sweeping thru asia, killing all in their path? Should we hold Mongolian history against those of today? Same ridiculous comparison.

11 Correct, greyrooster. The Church indeed has reformed itself and is no longer battling/killing moslems. Darn.
