WTW Barbecue
One of the ways Howie had been fighting high gas prices is I had a deep freeze full of deer. I had one big ass roast left. Monday I rested from a 64 hour week and celebrated my first death threat by having a glass of fine homemade wine and slapping that sucker on the Barbecue for 7 hours, tasty. Rick sends along summer barbecue rules for those of us that need refreshing.

Howie,
BBQ deer roast? Say it ain't so. BBQ the brisket, make steaks, sausage, and deer hamburger out of the rest. BBQ raccoons every time, as the taste of the meat is better when hidden by BBQ sause.
And the last bit of deer meat, and season is several months away. Better crank up that 4x4 and do some night riding in hopes of getting some fast food. Haha, great post, Howie!

I had never done a deer roast so I gave it a try. It's was pretty good really. Good excuse to sit by the grill all damn day too. We had some smaller roasts and we did those in the oven and used the leftovers for stew. I have no idea what the guy at the locker plant was thinking. This thing was huge would nto fit in the pan. So...
Anyway Grandpa's chest type deep freeze was stuffed a fe weeks ago with. One cow. Two pigs, Two deer and about 50 lbs of fish. He was here take this and that and some of this. He's always ahead of me. We'll be OK.

BBQ Raccoon, JJ? Are you serious? You learn something new everyday.
Posted by: Graeme at May 10, 2006 10:15 AM (7lUwZ)
5
JJ: Sausage? Surely you jest. What a waste of perfectly good venison. The parts most folks use for sausage I either bar-be-que [ribs, brisket] or cut into 1/2" cubes to make chili. The rest of the deer is made into steaks/chops and some small roasts.
I'm with you about B-B-Q ing roast, though. Pot roast, iron pot, low and slow.
If you're short, Howie, I still have plenty from last season that I'm trying hard to deplete before the season. Can't let the wife think that I don't need to go to the camp for a week or so.

I do not understand why there was no snake, or turtle. I have them with my deer, and raccoon every time. Wash it down with some ice cold Foster's Bitter.
Your wife sure had it easy, while you had all that hard work.

Yeah, Graeme, raccoon is pretty poor eating, but my dad always said, "if you kill it, you eat it". No wasting meat in our family. That's why I quit hunting raccoons in about the 10th grade.
And Charlie, I had a guy process some of my meat into sausage, and it is the best sausage I have ever had. Very lean, with cajun seasoning, and is it ever heavenly. Even the Islamos can eat deer sausage, not that I would give them any, mind you.

That clears things up for me JJ. I just wondered why, with an abundance of fish and game in Texas, you were running around hunting raccoons. I'm not one for the unusual varieties of wild game. As a kid I tried armadillo, but I suffered an allergic reaction (not sure if it was the meat or the seasonings) so I stay away from them. That makes me one of the few odd ones in my family. I've got relatives who love making and eating stewed possum.
Posted by: Graeme at May 10, 2006 06:30 PM (7lUwZ)
9
Graeme, are they from the American South? A possum eater who tried armadillo sounds like a true blue, or should I say gray, confederate. Where in the wide world did you get armadillo, Graeme?
And as a kid growing up, there was hardly anything more fun than staying up all night listening to the hounds running and then treeing a coon. Then it was helter-skelter through the woods to see who could be the first one to get the coon. After I had to eat a couple, I always let my friends win the race, but I enjoyed the hunt, and staying out all night by the campfire, and shooting the breeze, and smoking cigars, and drinking Lone Star long necks(don't tell my mama I did that), and Lisa and Joanie sneaking out of their house and joining us, and, well, one does have to be discreet about some things, right.
Posted by: jesusland joe at May 10, 2006 07:08 PM (rUyw4)

Enough with the coons! I've got 3 cute lil' bandits living in my backyard woods who come down at night and hang out on my back porch with me (of course I feed them).
You guys are .... savages!

Help Free Egyptian Bloggers
We've already brought you news that
Egyptian blogger Alaa was arrested. Egyptian Sandmonkey makes the following suggestion to help:
We have started an e-mail campaign to the Egyptian embassies and the US State Department in order to push for his release, and have started protests in front of the Egyptian embassy and consulates in the US for his release. We will also hold protests in France, Italy and Gemany. We could use your help in getting the word out and sending them an e-mail demanding his release.
Addresses for the Egyptian embassies in the US and Canada are available here, templates for e-mails to be sent to the embassies here, and the contact information for the person to e-mail in the US state department is here. If you are a journalist or know one, help us spread the word by writing about this or demanding your local newspaper write about this. If you have a blog or a website and would like to raise awareness about this issue, banners for the Free Alaa campaign can be found here and here. We could use any help we can get, so if you have any ideas or ways to help us, please do.
He also notes:
Egypt has fewer than 830 bloggers all in all, 60 of whom are political and less than 30 are politically active. Now 6 of those are in jail - 20% of all politically active Egyptian bloggers - and amongst them one of Egypt's most highly profiled one.

Egyptian blogger Arrested
Via Rantings of a Sandmonkey:
Alaa, blogger, co-founder of the egyptian blog aggregator Manalaa and democracy activist, got arrested today during a protest to support the Judiciary's branch fight for independence. He, and about 10 others, were rounded up in the street, beaten up and thrown in a police car. Amongst those who got arrested were at least 3 girls, and the police beat up at least another 2 girls as wellÂ…
Â…I will be damned if we let the regime get away with this. So, readers, if things come to that, we will need your help. The Committe to protect bloggers is no more, we are on our own and the regime is getting more desperate, paranoid and brutal by the minute. We will most certainly need your support to get him out, but let's just hope it doesn't come to that.

This is the most unintentionally funny thing I've seen in ages. Usually, inarticulate fury on the internet comes from the middle school crowd, and they necessarily lack the imagination to craft comedy gold like this.
Then again, maybe I can laugh at this because I'm not a christ, so I'm not going to end up with my hand cut whiche sacrileged the holy qouran. Nevertheless, I kinda like you gents so it's a little upsetting to think of u with ur neck cut and ending up as devilled meetballs in hell while Hashim is balls-deep in houris in the pleasure gardens of Allah. Online Integrity: Protecting The Privacy of Bloggers
Josh Trevino has come up with a voluntary, nonpartisan and nonideological code, meant to bring a basic measure of decency to online discourse. As one of the last of the anonymous bloggers, I wholeheartedly endorse it.
I've never understood the need to make claims of authority when writing online. Either what I write makes sense, or it does not. As long time readers of this blog know, I never write anything on this blog which is related to my academic research. My graduate school training may have helped me learn to write, but it did not train me to write about terrorism, propaganda, or South Park. My field of expertise usually comes as quite a shock to those meeting "Rusty" for the first time.
You do not need to know who I am. I am not Dr. Rusty Shackleford. For those of you who know the real me and have helped me keep my identity private, I thank you. Even though I have not even met some of you personally, I consider you friends.
There have been various attempts to "out" me. For the most part, these efforts are attempts to shut me up. No untenured college professor would dare to say some of the things I've said over the years--even when they are in tongue-in-cheek. Thus, trying to dig into the personal lives of public figures is a way to squelch what they really think.
The tactic may be familiar for readers of John Aravosis' America Blog. Aravosis and his readers have made it their mission to "out" gay public figures who have taken public stances against issues they support. They justify this as pointing out "hypocrisy"--a gay Congressman is a hypocrite if he doesn't support gay marriage and thus "deserves" to be outed. But really, this is nothing more or less than the online equivalent of blackmail---either change your policy stance or we will reveal to the world embarrassing information. Closetted gay Congressman who agree with Aravosis need not feel threatened. Their secret is safe.
At the most nefarious level, though, trying to "out" anonymous bloggers can be dangerous. The recent online attacks against my long-time blog friend Aaron is evidence that the various death threats I've received in the past should be taken seriously. Thus, for those of us who use humor to take on the Islamists and jihadis, our anonymity is also our shield against potentially violent repercussions. While I don't think most jihadis have the means to carry out their threats, it is possible that some of them do. Yet another reason for me to remain anonymous.
You can find the online statement of principles here. Here is the part that attracted me:
Persons seeking anonymity or pseudonymity online should have their wishes in this regard respected as much as is reasonable.
Indeed.

You say: Either what I write makes sense, or it does not...You do not need to know who I am.
I totally agree. The nice thing about the internet is that if a blogger states facts which are fictions he/she is rapidly discredited by other blogger/readers. There's no need to know the identity of the writer. It might be interesting, but it's not necessary. This is doubly so in the case of op-ed blogs like yours. As you say, you make sense, or you don't. I agree with your opinions, or I don't.

It should be noted that there is a LONG history of anonymous political writing. Much of the debate over our constitution was conducted pseuodonymously, sometimes quite anonymously. A recent Supreme Court case argued that campaign finance laws that forbid the distribution of anonymous pamphlets violated the 1st amendment, since anonymous speech was still protected.
On the other hand: I don't think that the blogosphere really is that self-correcting. I've pointed out factual errors to bloggers, and they remain uncorrected. Not matters of opinion, but screaming howlers of stupidity--like JFK voted against the Civil Rights Act (he was dead). Moreover, I think that it is simply too much effort to evaluate each comment you read on the internet for truth. Over time, you learn who walks with the truth, and you give their claims more credence. You also look to see who corrects their errors when they make them. I'd rather read someone who is 70% correct, if they fix what is wrong, than read someone who is 90% correct if they never change the 10% that is erroneous. And sometimes, knowing that a blogger is a PhD in public opinion, for example (like Charles Franklin's wondrous website) gives his opinions about that question added weight with me. Qualifications do matter, as does fact checking and fact correcting.

I post openly under my real name. While other people seem to feel safer "in the closet" I do not think it offers much in the way of real protection. I will not post or say anything in secret that I would not say in public. Although I did make some prank phone calls when I was a child.
Posted by: john Ryan at May 03, 2006 12:55 PM (TcoRJ)
5
John--if you had a website, would you post cartoons of the prophet? And still be public about your name?
I've had people threaten me physically based on what I post (that's actually illegal, but whatever). And threaten to somehow send my computer viruses. I don't take those threats seriously at all. But if someone knows your name, and develops a hatred for you, there are a lot of little asinine things he can do to make your life miserable.
My own feeling is that death threats against bloggers by "terrorists" are highly uncredible. Why would they go after some minor blogger when they could take out some of the really high profile cons or libs who they could hate? It's not like Michelle Malkin, Andrew Sullivan, or Kos go around with phalanxes of security guards. Remember, publicity is to terror what air is to fire. Why would they risk their lives to get 1/10 of the publicity by killing Rusty (sorry to kill you as an example, Doc) when they could get their cause much more attention by killing, say, Hugh Hewitt?

Your privacy is, of course, your own business. But you don't mention the down side of privacy: You get to say any damned thing you want without having to take responsibility for it. That's a pretty interesting position from someone who believes in state censorship during times of war. But of course we should only censor/out/punish those who speak out against/expose state policies that you do support, right?

Aw Shaddap!
Not the kind of thing to say to bloggers since they are just waiting on an argument and have blogs.
Glenn Reynolds Via TCS Daily : It seems like a lot of people are trying to shut up bloggers all of a sudden. It also doesn't seem to be working very well.
One example from last week was a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack against a blog, Aaron's CC
I agree as strategy that is sure to backfire. Glenn includes other examples including

This would be a "foot in the door" and the beginning of PC on the web. This is somthing we should fight against. Denial of free speech is against our first amendment rights. First one, then another, then just "approved blogs" by some council.

That's one of the reasons I decided to blog. Too good to last. I hope it stays as wide open and free as it has been especially in 2004-2005 but history says no. Do it while it lasts however long that may be.

Send a Trackback, Get a Fatwa!
I'm busy preparing for finals today and putting last minute touches on my London trip. How can you help? Send us a trackback, and we'll issue a fatwa against you. Getting us to link you has never been so easy!

I always wanted a Fatwa against me!

Rusty,
Unfortunately, your software makes it as hard to get a fatwa from you, as it is for you to get one from the jihadis.
Neither the WordPress, Haloscan, or Wizbang pinger will get through.
I don't know if this is a MT thing or not. Maybe Pixy can fix?

I don't even know HOW to trackback.

confirmed via haloscan TB is not working right. maybe down to prevent spam I'll try again later. Odd because one just posted about 30 minutes ago.

When you get to London just travel to a suburb like Wembley or Ilford and profess your hate of Islam. A Fatwa will come thick and fast, probably a pavement beheading too.

Yes I get errs too. Seems that the port is closed whatevber that means. It was odd becuase our last TB was posted this afternoonh from April 12th and then they stopped working. I've emailed Pixi and sorry about that they broke just before Rusty posted this. Email links and I'll add em to the post until Tb gets fisked.

Oh! I've tried TB a couple of times through Simpletracks, but I thought it was just me having problems.

What is the position of the American Indians on this immigration issue ? I am thinking that they may have some strong feelings on this.

john ryan,
The American Indians didn't enforce their borders and look where it got them. Time to throw out the trash!

Indians? Why do you always think of Indians as on the reservation oppressed. Many intergrated into white society. My ancestors were German Irish and Shawnee. Have one Indian and his wife indian too two doors down from Mom another across the way. They check white on their census and are accepted as such. Well except they tan well even in winter.

American Indians was the preferred term before the PC imbeciles decided it wasn't.

PC or not, it does make it easier to distinguish between the two when we white folk are talking about them, when there are so many Indian nationals in this country, saying "Indians" gets kinda confusing. Hey, I grew up playing Cowboys and Injuns too ya know. And yeah I don't know of anybody around these parts that doesn't at least claim to have some "injun blood" in em. But there are more Indians from India than the native kind around here. I became a lot more senstive to the whole issue when I met my girlfriend who is 1/4 Miwok.

Last Day of Classes Blues (London Calling!)
Actually, tomorrow is the last day of classes, but since most classes follow a M-W-F schedule, today is really the last day.
Seriously, I think my head might explode. Just one more paper on why drugs are bad, mmm-kay, and I think I might help my head along.
So, if I don't post today it's because I'm: a) dead--suicide b) dead--murdered by student c) in jail--for murdering student d) passed out--drunk
On that note let me remind my British friends that I'll be in London from the 14th - 20th and I'm trying to put together a wee shin dig. Contact me directly.

Yes, drugs are horribly, horribly bad. I believe I'll do a ten paragraph post above the fold on just why drugs are bad.

Ahhhhhh, the inevitable college drugs are bad papers/speeches.
Almost all the people in my IPC course were doing 'drugs or binge drinking is bad' as their topic. I was supposed to do immigration, but got sick of writing papers on it for policy class, so I decided instead to fall back on banning Dihydrogen Monoxide just for a lark.

This semester damn near wasted me, too. Thus far, I've managed to score a B, C- and an "incomplete"--meaning I'll have a few
additional months to successfully finish what I should've during
these. I only wish I could drink with ya in meatspace. As it is, I can only state that, in all honesty, I'm doing pretty well with the spiced rum and crappy American beer I've got at hand. (My other grade had better be an A, dammit.)
