VOA:
President Bush has picked John Bolton to be the United States' new ambassador to the United Nations.Speaking to reporters Monday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Mr. Bolton is a tough-minded diplomat who knows how to get things done. She said he will be a strong voice for U.N. reform.
Mr. Bolton currently serves as undersecretary of state for arms control and international security.
In that post, he helped set up the Proliferation Security Initiative, a global effort to stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
He has spoken out in favor of isolating Iran and North Korea because of their suspected nuclear weapons programs.
Mr. Bolton is known for a blunt speaking style that has sometimes caused friction with other countries. But Ms. Rice said some of Washington's best ambassadors have been those with the strongest voices.
If confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Bolton would succeed John Danforth, who retired in January.
