French Arrest 20 Members of 'Islamic Network'

France's domestic counterterrorism agency, Direction de la surveillance du territoire (DST), arrested twenty people in pre-dawn raids around Paris today believed to be part of "...an Islamist network linked to terrorism".

From the BBC:

Some of the suspects are believed to have been involved in crimes to help fund Islamic groups.

The raids on homes and internet cafes were ordered by French anti-terrorism magistrates.

Most of those detained were young men of Tunisian and Moroccan origin, some holding French nationality, officials told AFP.

French politicians have not yet agreed on a new anti-terror bill that would allow terrorist suspects to be held up to six days, instead of four. We'll have to check back in four days to see if the French government is busy negotiating terms of surrender with the Islamists.

The Mistakes of Able Danger Live On

Answers to some of the troubling questions about the Able Danger data-mining project can be found in this National Journal article posted at Govexec.com. In interviewing Erik Kleinsmith, the officer who destroyed the Able Danger electronic data, Shane Harris has managed to resurrect quite a bit of the short history of the Information Dominance Center, of which Able Danger was a part, and offers this explanation as to why the massive stores of data and analysis were destroyed:

In early 2000, in the midst of Able Danger, a lawyer with the Army's general counsel visited Kleinsmith. As Kleinsmith testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee in September, the lawyer reminded him that under Army regulations, any data the IDC collected on U.S. persons -- even inadvertently -- had to be destroyed within 90 days. If analysts could establish a legitimate reason to investigate a person further, they could keep the corresponding data.

But with potentially tens of thousands of names, checking each one would have been impossible, Kleinsmith said. In the Pentagon briefing, Gandy concurred: "I don't think they had the capability to scrub it in the fashion that the oversight rules could live with."

So two and a half terabytes of data were sent to oblivion. This is not to say that the work of Able Danger would have prevented the 9/11 outrage. more...

Jawa Taking it to the Terrorists

It has just been brought to my attention that, er, certain things are being done by, er, certain "authorities", about, er, certain things said in the previous post, and that certain, er, companies are fully cooperating with said authorites. As you can see, I have taken down that post. If you read that post then you are probably as shocked as I am that we, er, were able to get, er, well, you know what I'm talking about.

If you didn't read the post than that will teach you for not checking the Jawa Report every two minutes! And you call yourself a loyal fan?

What was this mysterious post about? I know nothing. Besides, doesn't all the mystery kind of add to the ambience around here?

But, seriously, I'm pretty freaking flabbergasted that my little investigation that I started and e-mailed a few "authorities" about before putting up the post is being taken seriously. Very seriously.

Comment thread on this post will be closed because some of you blabbermouths can't be trusted! More later (fingers crossed, knock on wood, etc.)

Senior Chechnyan al Qaeda Leader Reportedly Killed in Suicide Blast

The Counterterrorism Blog reports that Abu Omar Mohammed bin Abdullah al-Saif, a Saudi al Qaeda in Chechnya commander, has killed himself in Dagestan to avoid capture by Russian forces:

Unable to escape after Russian soldiers backed by helicopters surrounded his temporary hideout, Abu Omar allegedly detonated an explosive device he was carrying and collapsed the building on top of himself. Known as the "Imam of the Chechen mujahideen", Abu Omar was an original founder of the Arab-Afghan mujahideen movement in Chechnya and was named by Russian officials as a suspect in numerous Caucasus-linked terrorist attacks, including the Moscow theatre siege and the Beslan school hostage massacre.
The Counterterrorism Blog has more, including a 2000 interview with Abu Omar.

(Images/Video) Terrorist Videos Reveal Weakness and Lies of Insurgency

al_qaeda_terrorists_ramadi_1.jpgUPDATE: The video has been debunked and is NOT the Fallujah attack but some other attack. See this post.

The Islamic Army in Iraq has released a video of an IED attack against Marines in Fallujah. The attack killed 10 Marines. Images from the video are posted below. They are not graphic, but may be disturbing.

Al Qaeda in Iraq has also released a video of its Ramadi offensive. Images posteed below and right. For links to video, please e-mail author.

The video shows a Marine patrol and a Hummer rolling down an alley or a narrow road, on which civilians are present. The Hummer passes the Marines as it approaches the terrorist's position. The IED explosion is large and does damage to the Humvee, but the driver inside appears to be able to continue to drive the vehicle. Civilians can be seen panicking and fleeing. The video then becomes shaky as the terrorist flees the scene.

The video reveals why the IED attack was so devestating. Presumably, like most incidents of this nature, the IED was planted with the expectation that it would be exploded as a vehicle or convey passed. The terrorists, it would seem, just got 'lucky' in that on this particular day a foot patrol decided to walk down the wrong alley.

Despite media reports of 'mounting casualties', attacks are down in Iraq. The IED attack reveals that the so-called insurgents cannot mount even an effective attack against U.S. positions.

Yesterday, propagandists for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's al Qaeda in Iraq posted a message claiming they had taken 'control of Ramadi'. This despite the fact that the terrorists were only able to fire a single mortar shell at a U.S. position and less than 300 U.S. troops and 200 Iraqis were used in the counteroffensive. The counteroffensive turned out to be nothing more than the troops entering Ramadi unnoposed and turned into a routine search and sweep operation.

The only evidence that al Qaeda offered that they 'controlled' Ramadi was a short video by their IMC media arm showing a group of masked young men in cheap warm-up pants and tee shirts slowly going down a narrow alley. There are no more than seven or eight terrorists in the group. That's right, 7-8 terrorists with AK-47's and a single RPG! An image from that video is posted above and a few more are posted below.

Oddly enough, the IMC (Islamic Media Center) cameraman hides from the terrorists while he takes the video. The IMC has recently pledge its loyalty to Osama bin Laden and urged others to do the same. It appears that even the jihadi supporters are afraid of the brave and noble mujahidin!

So, if the 'insurgency' cannot hold any territory, is not very popular in the eyes of even Sunnis these days, and must resort to remotely detonated bombs and hostage taking, in what lies their hope of victory?

The media and spineless politicians in Washington D.C.

The spinmeisters at al Jazeera, Jihad Unspun, and Uruknet report the communique as fact and then, trying to turn this into some grand irony, announce that the Ramadi 'victory' comes only days after Bush announced his strategy for victory. As if a single IED and a handful of sweat-pants clad 'insurgents' are a threat to U.S. victory in Iraq!

It would all be very laughable if the U.S. media wasn't so busy hand-wringing and having LSD induced flashbacks of Vietnam. The media spin then leads the American public to think that this insurgency poses an actual threat and that somehow we cannot win in Iraq. All of this is not helped by the extreme Left wing of the Democratic party which is all to eager to see America lose in Iraq.

Folks, the only threat to our long-term victory in Iraq comes not form the terrorists, but from spineless politicians in the U.S.

Images below. more...

Morocco Nabs 17 Al Qaeda Suspects

The Moroccans are continuously in a state of high security alert after suicide bombings in Casablanca killed 45 people in 2003. As a result, extremists are watched very closely.

From Ninemsn:

Morocco security forces have arrested 17 radical Islamists on suspicion of belonging to a "terrorist structure" linked to al Qaeda, state news agency MAP said, quoting a police source.
Bully!

[Update 11/20/05, 2350 EST]

(via In The Bullpen) According to ABC News, two of the suspected terrorists apprehended are former prisoners from the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Brahim Benchekroun and Mohammed Mazouz were arrested in late 2001 and accused of participating in weapons training conducted by al Qaeda. They were released from Guantanamo Bay in August 2004.

Al Qaeda Targeted Intel Meeting in Amman Blast

DEBKAfile reports that the al Qaeda bombing at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Amman last Wednesday specifically targeted a secret intelligence meeting. The attack wiped out the entire group of senior Palestinian, Jordanian and Saudi intelligence officers. With the arrest of the unsuccessful fourth bomber, Sajid Mubarak Atrous al-Rishawi, Jordanian investigators have a possible lead to identifying who leaked the time and place of the secret meeting.

Agreed, DEBKAfile sometimes comes across as a little loosey-goosey in its assertions. In my opinion, that doesn't seem to be the case with the latest report.

Jordan's King Abdullah Vows to Get Zarqawi

(Amman, Jordan) Here's some strong language from an Arab leader.

From ABC News Online:

Jordan's King Abdullah has vowed to track down the militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, after officials announced they hold Zarqawi's group "Al Qaeda in Iraq" responsible for the blasts in Amman that killed 57 people.
In addition to Jordan, I'd like to see some other mid-eastern countries aggressively pursuing Zarqawi.

Multinational Force Spokesman: Media Being Manipulated by Terrorists

Stating a blindingly obvious point that has somehow escaped the Western media, Army Major General Rick Lynch today said:

"Half the battle is in the battlefield of the media. The terrorists will use the media as a combat multiplier to hide their limited capabilities."
It's a shame that the General has to spoonfeed the press like this, but with the massive egos occupying the brainpans, especially in television news, of reporters there just isn't much room left over for analytic ability and common sense.

Common sense should have told even the dullest newsperson in the Palestine Hotel that it had no intrinsic military value other than as propaganda, yet each network dutifully carried water for the terrorist insurgency by replaying the "spectacular explosions" over and over.

Odd, given the broadcast media's fascination for brilliant flashes of light and shiny things that there has been an embargo of images from the 9/11 attacks for years. The excuse given is that they don't want to "inflame" the American public. Unfortunately, there seems to be no equivalent concern about inflaming the ignorant, bloodthirsty, and illiterate buffoons who make up the bulk of the "Arab street". more...

Islamic Army in Iraq New Video

This week on Infovlad a new and old video were posted from Islamic Army in Iraq. So what is the big deal? IÂ’ll tell you, the new video lacked a header, singing voices and all the other post production details and fancy bells and whistles. Also after Al-Qaeda announced a weekly news program they have failed to deliver the goods. Add to that the capture of their main webmaster and you see why. See itÂ’s not so much the machines but the people to run them as well.

Then terrorists attacked the Palestine hotel attempting to capture journalists or possibly take the building for a 1970's Olympics style operation. They failed, while they killed some people the IraqiÂ’s and Americans they had much bigger plans. Also think about the not so obvious targets there equipment, producers and technicians. So while they are bound to pop up the 2 month drought combined with the low quality release make this Jawa feel pretty good.

Saudi Anti-Terror Program: Perfume On A Pig

(Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) According to a report in the Arab News, an unnamed source said yesterday that a sweep of a Riyadh neighborhood resulted in the arrest of 13 terror suspects believed to be members of al-Qaeda. Notably, the group is primarily boys under 16, one is a 13-year-old boy, and one is the brother of an al-Qaeda member who is on the government's most-wanted list.

Notwithstanding the importance of rounding up any and all terror suspects, a rational observer has to be somewhat skeptical of the Saudi anti-terrorism commitment given the following:

The arrests in Riyadh coincided with reports of the release of a number of suspects involved in terrorist operations who had given shelter to terrorists after they repented their wrongdoing, said Abdul Mohsen Al-Obaikan, a member of the Shoura Council and the committee of scholars assigned to hold dialogue with the militants.
Therefore, if the terrorists say that they are sorry to a group of scholars, everything is okay and they are free to go. Great! Scholars ask a bunch of fanatics that are schooled in dishonesty to truthfully say they are sorry. I have no confidence that this criminal justice technique produces anything but laughs.

Consequently, it seems that the Saudi efforts to combat terrorism are more cosmetic than substantive. The efforts are also inconsistent since the Saudis have historically chopped off body parts for less significant crimes. If the terrorists lost a body part every time they were implicated, I guarantee that the glory and honor of terror would be greatly diminished and recruiting would suffer dramatically. No longer would people be predisposed to worship the memory of glorious martyrs in heaven enjoying their 72 virgins. Instead, they would see the martyr-in-training with one arm, one leg, or better yet, missing his manhood. In fact, the loss of manhood would be the recruiting deal-killer since the promised reward of 72 virgins would be meaningless. That is, unless the martyr-in-training found it appealing to have 72 women that he couldn't mount chewing on his ear for eternity.

Egypt Builds Anti-Terror Fence

(Cairo) As a result of being a target for terrorists, the popular tourist destination of Sharm El-Sheikh will be a city surrounded by a security fence.

From ArabNews.com:

Egypt has started building a wire fence around Sharm El-Sheikh's tourist spots in a bid to prevent attackers from crossing into the Red Sea resort that was hit by deadly bombings in July, a security official said yesterday. "The fence aims to block cars from entering tourist areas except from four designated points and thus prevent possible terror attacks," the official said on condition of anonymity.

The fence would span 20 kilometers, stand one-and-a-half meters high, and be patrolled by security forces, the official said. He said work started on Saturday but did not say when it would end. Once the fence is complete, access to the city will be restricted to police-monitored entry points, equipped with state-of-the-art explosive detection equipment, he said.

Obviously, the question has to be pondered of how the Egyptian fence is any different from the wall being constructed by the Israelis for the same reason. And, the last I checked, every group that can sniff a goat from the European Union to the Arab League and to the United Nations has denounced the Israeli wall as the inhumane "Apartheid Wall."

Will these groups now also denounce the Egyptian fence? I think not. The opposition newspaper Al-Wafd in Egypt, however, did ask the question and remarked that the fence would only attract terrorists. We'll just have to wait to see how the rest of the critics respond.

[Update 10/20/05]

(From Ritzy) It seems that news of the fence was incorrect or plans have changed. According to this report, Governor Mustafa Afifi of South Sinai said that 80cm concrete walls are being constructed to keep out the camels and prevent accidents. Evidently, terrorists will continue to be allowed access to Sharm El-Sheikh as long as they don't travel by camel.

Al Qaeda Orders Strike on Nuclear Power Plants in U.S.

AdamGadahn_abu_azzam_al_amriki.jpgA posting at an Islamic forum on Oct. 3 relayed a command order to "the al Qaeda Organization in America" to strike nuclear power plants in the United States.

Centcom, which translated the original message, is skeptical of the authenticity of it, calling it a "fantasy threat" that would "go unfulfilled". However, a veiled threat was included in Centcom's statement alluding to the ultimate destruction of al Qaeda should they successfully carry out a nuclear attack on U.S. soil.

The message by 'Ayef', who claims to be working under the direction of an al Qaeda leader named 'Abu-Jandal', was directed to 'Abu-Azzam al-Amriki' (Abu Azzam the American)--named as the leader of al Qaeda in America--and other al Qaeda members in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. The specifics of the attack, the message implied, would be further designated by Abu-Azzam al-Amriki.

'Azzam al-Armiki' is the nickname of Adam Gadahn, the Orange County California native that appeared in an al Qaeda propaganda film last year. Gadahn, aka 'Abu Suhayb Al-Amriki, Abu Suhayb, Yihya Majadin Adams, Adam Pearlman, Yayah', is wanted by the FBI 'in connection with possible terrorist threats against the United States'.

Ayef claims to be an aide to al Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The statement further claimed the al Qaeda has not been in communication with 'Ja'far al-Tayyar' who had been previously assigned the task of blowing up a nuclear reactor in the U.S. for several years. Ja'far al-Tayyar has been presumed killed or captured by the U.S., the message says.

'Ja'far al-Tayyar' is the nickname of Adnan El-Shukrijumah, a naturalized U.S. citizen who set off alarms last year when the FBI announced he was the leader of a suspected plot to detonate a dirty bomb in the U.S.

World Net Daily today ran a story about El-Shukrijumah in which they allege he is the mastermind of a plot to detonate full blown nuclear bombs in the U.S.

Centcom also published the e-mail of the al Qaeda terrorist, 'Ayef', who posted the message.

Here is your chance to e-mail a terrorist with the reminder that if you receive an e-mail back from them, please promptly FORWARD it to me: cade7722@yahoo.com and boda_8899@hotmail.com

Bush Speech on GWOT

I was able to catch Mr. Bush's speech via a stream. He presented the Terrorists as they are. But then again we already knew that. Below find a link to the entire transcript and a few choice quotes. If anyone anywhere has any doubt about the GWOT read it!!!!

Transcript via The Whitehouse.

We know the vision of the radicals because they've openly stated it -- in videos, and audiotapes, and letters, and declarations, and websites. First, these extremists want to end American and Western influence in the broader Middle East, because we stand for democracy and peace, and stand in the way of their ambitions. Al Qaeda's leader, Osama bin Laden, has called on Muslims to dedicate, quote, their "resources, sons and money to driving the infidels out of their lands." Their tactic to meet this goal has been consistent for a quarter-century: They hit us, and expect us to run. They want us to repeat the sad history of Beirut in 1983, and Mogadishu in 1993 -- only this time on a larger scale, with greater consequences

The Root Cause of Terrorism isÂ…Terrorists Duh

Slate:

But if JI were rational, it wouldn't have attacked the bars and clubs and beaches of Kuta and Jimbaran in the first place. Indonesia is a mainly Muslim society, whose government takes a stern line against the war in Iraq and even Afghanistan

Ok so Hitchens has that part right why is he the only one on the left with his eyes open?

Dr. Sanity has a good explanation.

Hitchens is being logical. Hitchens is trying to appeal to the principles that he believes are the foundation for Leftist thoughtÂ…Â… He is able to see the essential truth about the Islamofascists, and has accordingly supported the war in Afghanistan and the removal of Saddam. He thinks he is supporting the principles of his ideologyÂ… Â… if he thinks for one moment that people like George Galloway and the members of ANSWER or the rest of the lunatic fringe of the Left give one whit for any rational arguments--he is deluding himself

Rational thought has never been a strong point of the Left or the terrorists. The terrorist will blow you up right in the middle of the apology and then dance on your broken body afterward. Trying to ascribe reason to an enemy that doesnÂ’t play that is just silly. The only reason to try and understand the terrorists is so you can kill them first. Oh yes they can use reason or emotion as a tool for the deception of the infidel. Let me be clear it's the terrorists and those who follow them. Don't want to be like evil or anything.

Score One for the Good Guys

New York Governor George Pataki finally reached down and grabbed a pair today. He has told the International Freedom Center that they are not wanted at Ground Zero.

"Freedom should unify us. This center has not," Pataki said. "Today there remains too much opposition, too much controversy over the programming of the IFC. ... We must move forward with our first priority, the creation of an inspiring memorial to pay tribute to our lost loved ones and tell their stories to the world."

For those of you not familiar with this controversy, the International "Freedom" Center has been trying to exploit Ground Zero to build what amounts to an anti-American monument. They wished to build a museum to show how American intervention has ruined lives around the world and how the "peaceful Muslims" have been persecuted and terrified. Of course that's not EXACTLY how they put it, but the message remains the same.

In the spirit of cooperation, Pataki was even generous enough to offer to help find some other location for the IFC to build their museum. Of course their reply was much less gracious.

Pataki initially said the state would help the International Freedom Center find another home, but center officials said they weren't interested and considered the project dead.

As expected, not everyone is happy about the center being closed down. Mayor Bloomburg has been quoted as saying "Although I understand Governor Pataki's decision, I am disappointed that we were not able to find a way to reconcile the freedoms we hold so dear with the sanctity of the site." Of course if he thinks that the center had anything to do with freedom, he sould probably go back and read his literature again.

For more information about just what the IFC had planned, you can visit Take Back The Memorial or check out this Opinion Journal article.

Thanks to my ever-vigilant CF readers for bringing this story to my attention.

Al-Jazeera Reporter Convicted in Spanish Terrorism Trial

Buried far down in a report about the conviction of a Spanish al Qaeda cell leader is this nugget, which confirms what most reasonable people have suspected about the pan-Arab propaganda outlet al-Jazeera all along.

From the Associated Press via Yahoo! News:

Twenty-one others also stood trial, but on charges not directly related to Sept. 11. Of those, 16 were convicted of belonging to or collaborating with a terrorist organization and five were acquitted.

One of the 16 was Tayssir Alouny, a correspondent for the pan-Arab TV network Al-Jazeera. He was convicted of collaboration and sentenced to seven years in jail.

Al-Jazeera condemned Alouny's verdict.

"It was a black day in the history of the Spanish justice," Al-Jazeera news editor Ahmed al-Sheik told the broadcaster from Madrid. "We were all shocked because everyone expected Alouny to be freed. It is a regrettable event in the history of international journalism when a journalist who sought the truth becomes the accused."

Alouny is one of the "journalists" who interviewed Osama bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks and subsequently, al-Jazeera has become virtually the only "news organization" on the al Qaeda press release list. This is a good start, but now the civilized world needs to get serious with the rest of the terrorist sympathizers and collaborators at al-Jazeera.
