"Willy Nagin and the Chocolate Factory"

In 2002 I spent several weeks in New Orleans. Most of it was good, but there was racial tension just under the surface; much more raw than a born-and-bred Yankee was accustomed to seeing. The natural inclination is to blame unregenerate white Southern attitudes, and there was some evidence to support that view, but it's only half of the story.

Here's the other half:

On Monday, Nagin said God wanted New Orleans to be predominantly black and said he didn't care what the predominantly white Uptown section of the city had to say about it.

"I don't care what people are saying Uptown or wherever they are. This city will be chocolate at the end of the day," he said. "This city will be a majority African-American city. It's the way God wants it to be."

After the statement, he insisted he wasn't being divisive.

"How do you make chocolate? You take dark chocolate, you mix it with white milk, and it becomes a delicious drink. That is the chocolate I am talking about," he said. "New Orleans was a chocolate city before Katrina. It is going to be a chocolate city after. How is that divisive? It is white and black working together, coming together and making something special."

Yeah, right. I've heard that kind of backpedaling from white bigots, too.

It's time for this clown to be shown the door.

1 It's blacks, not whites, who insist on perpetuating racism, because without it, they have nothing.

2 >>>It's blacks, not whites, who insist on perpetuating racism, because without it, they have nothing. But it's Liberal whiteys who taught them that trick.

3 "Chocolate City" .. interesting term .. guess he could have used Black Reservation or Township .. would have meant the same as the first.

4 Ray's a funny guy! I mean - God is mad at America? Er Ray - if you believe that, did ya notice that God smited a black city in his rage? What's up with that?

Posted by: hondo at January 17, 2006 08:18 PM (3aakz)

5 Ray's definitely not the brightest bulb in the room - or is he? Looks good for re-election and presiding over the biggest urban renewal construction boom in US history! All this in a city and state legendary for graft and corruption! Maybe Ray is a smart guy! Has he invested any money yet on property in a country without an extradtion treaty for future retirement (just in case)?

6 The big problem Ray has right now is that New Orleans is a white city and they are going to vote his sorry ass out of office forthwith. His "great black hope" is to convince as many of his former black squatters to give up their new squattances and return to New Orleans in as hasty a way as possible, preferably pulling their portable squattances(mobile homes, which is a terrible idea in an area prone to flooding and hurricanes). If they can only get there before the next election, he is confident of being re-elected. If, in fact, he is ever elected to any public office in Louisiana again, I say that whatever happens to his constituents will be because they had it coming for being so stupid. And because they made God mad! Haha!

7 JJ NO has a sizable white liberal population and it is intact in the city as we speak. Big push was on to get the colleges and universities up and running again. Students are residents for voting and under the current circumstances their election influence has increased significantly - and they are predominately white and liberal. Nagin's biggest fear is a viable black challenger - he doesn't want them all back! Just enough he can control - and white liberals are more than enough for him to win. Ray abandoned chunks of the city's black population during the crisis presicely because HE DOESN'T NEED THEM! Politics is numbers JJ, and I do understand the game. Winning by 20% is the same as winning by one vote, and winning is the only thing.

8 So true Carlos, so true. On that note, and considering to whom I am addressing this comment, I find it funny that according to liberals, Hispanics should be rising up in arms to demand equality and fair treatment, but they're not, which liberals find puzzling. What's funny about it is that the reason Hispanics aren't behaving as they're expected to by the liberals, is because they're too busy working and succeeding in the Land of the Free, and between raising their families and becoming prosperous, they don't seem to have time to complain. Imagine that. I read an article by a UT professor, Loida Velazquez, a couple of years ago, and she was going on ad nauseum about how Hispanics had to present a "united front" against white colonialist-imperialist racism, and other Marxist claptrap. It was sickening to say the least, especially considering that this is one of only two nations in the Western hemisphere that isn't Hispanic, but what was notable about it is that she seems to be one of only a handful of people in the Hispanic community, mostly well-heeled liberals, if you can believe it, who find cause to complain. Every day I see Hispanic immigrants and locals mixing and mingling in every way imaginable, and no picket lines or even dirt looks in sight. It's just killing the local libtards that immigrants and locals are getting along like peas and carrots, because it steals their thunder. I love it. The reason for this ease of mixing is simple; Hispanics and Southerners are much alike in many ways, and the cultural gap between the two groups are substantially less than they appear to be, though liberals can't seem to see past skin color and ethnic origin, but then, that's to be expected of the last officially acceptable racists.

9 hondo, Ray made some promises in NO that he reneged on. Plus he has shown himself to be not only imcompetant but irrelavant, so even white liberals will be shopping around for someone who is at least minimally competant. If a black man or woman falls into that category, then I think many whites, both liberal and conservative, would vote for them. I don't think this is a black vs. white issue, as anyone seen to be competant would have a good chance of being elected. I have talked to many of the refugees from NO, many of whom have decided to never return to that city. Regardless of what happens, suffice it to say that NO will be much smaller and a lot whiter. Ray is likely gone in the next election.

10 The reason (there are actually several) Hispanics aren't behaving like liberals expect is because they can see success, mobility, and acceptance constantly growing. The biggest advantage Hispanics (lousy term - very diverse group!) have is that a significant portion of the so-called white population view them as another white-ethnic group. In areas dominated by white ethnics (Italian, Greek, Irish, Polish, German) Hispanics fit right in - and we embrace and insult each other with gusto! Growing up in NYC we saw Hispanics as another ethnic group - not until I left NY for the Army did I encounter whites from other parts of the country who viewed them as "another race". I never understood it and never accepted it for myself (yeah! I know! Indian blood and stuff - sooo? I got no beef with amerindian peoples). Besides - they got the best looking women in the world! and I have travelled the world and notice things like that!

Posted by: hondo at January 17, 2006 09:40 PM (3aakz)

15 I don't know, but I eat one just about every damn morning. They are the best, and I ask myself every time, why is this little egg sandwich so good? Must be the cheese.

17 Good points hondo, especially about how most whites view Hispanics as simply another white ethnic group, which, generally speaking, isn't really inaccurate, though not really accurate either. The term "Hispanic", simply means someone who is of Spanish ancestry or who comes from a Spanish speaking country, and can't really do justice to the broad diversity of Hispanics, who may be blonde and blue-eyed Argentines, dark-eyed, black-haired Indios, or anywhere in between. The one thing that most Hispanics have in common with us Gringos is that we share colonial heritage, a hemisphere, and old-world values to one extent or another. This is one reason so many have settled in Tennessee; they fit in among native Southerners easily. A friend of mine, from Michoacan state in Mexico, told me he had lived all over the US before settling here, and he likes Tennessee better than anyplace else. I tend to agree, but then, I'm a native, and have known this all my life.

18 Nagin should face murder charges for refusing to bus out the elderly. Nuff said.

19 Nagin should be forced to live in a city full of uncivilized savages who behave like animals and... oh wait, never mind.

20 Ray "choclate Boy" Nagin is in the same catagory as "I need help Blanco". They are both not qualified for the job they are serving in,and not to blame for this. The people of Louisiana are the ones to blame. Sometimes I think that some people should not be allowed to vote simply because they Don't know what they are doing.
