Will The Real Conservatives Please Stand Up?

In catching up with the mail and stories that I've missed over the past week or so, I noticed one that seems to not be getting the full attention that it deserves. After Bush's whopping federal aid comittment to the people affected by Hurricane Katrina, and what is sure to be matching funds for Hurricane Rita, some people are beginning to ask where the money is going to come from. Of course when you ask the liberal side of the goverment that question, you get your stock answer. "We'll just tax the rich more." And if they were in control, I'm sure that's exactly what they would do. Of course with the state of our economy right now (high gas prices, other prices rising to compensate, distribution problems due to the hurricanes, etc), that reaction could very well send the US into a downward spiral from which we might never recover.

Instead, a small group of House Republicans have come up with a plan. It is being hailed as genius in some corners and most everyone agrees that it is a good idea. Of course I don't read liberal publications very much, but I have yet to read anything bad about it (and again, I'm not going to pay $50 just to hear Krugman talk about how it sucks). Everyone seems to be amazed at the ingenuity of the plan. So what is this plan? Act like a conservative. That's right, go back to the original conservative values of not spending more money than you have. These House Republicans want to start bringing government spending under control. And they want to start by reopening the atrocious highway bill that was just passed and removing 6,000 pork projects from it. There are many other changes involving cutting out excessive spending in many other areas as well, but this one stands out because most people are familiar with it.

But I have a problem with this plan. My problem is that we haven't been screaming for it from day one. How long now have we had a Republican controlled Senate, Congress and White House? Where was this group of brave Republicans when this highway bill was first passed? Honestly, some of them may have voted against it. But certainly not all Republicans did. If that were the case, it never would have passed. And our Republican President certainly didn't veto it. We would have heard about that. And what about all the other pork projects? Proponents of this plan are saying that we could save $1 Trillion dollars over ten years. Wow. That kind of money could sure go a long way toward making Social Security solvent. Or paying off our national debt. Or make one hell of a lot of tax return checks for us poor working stiffs.

So I'm asking you, is your Republican Senator or Congressman acting like a Conservatve? If not, maybe he needs a small reminder that elections are coming up very soon. And even if they aren't up for reelection this time, they are sometime. We've got Republicans back in office. Let's make sure now that we've got Conservatives.

2 Thanks, Howie. I guess I don't know Bluto, but if he reads this thread, my other blog is http://www.conservativefriends.com.

3 The hardest problem is getting them to admit that there is pork in the budget at all. So far, most reps contacted defend certain budgetary requests for necessary projects, but are careful not to mention those projects that are not necessary. To think that we would believe that there aren't any "unecessary" projects in the budget is insulting. I've been perusing TTLB's PorkBusters project and found some really interesting things. One instance is linked from there to punditeria.com. One rep, Senator Salazar(D) Colorado, has automated responses which are triggered by key words in the email they recieve. And the responses haven't even been updated. Sorry, I don't have time to respond personally. I'm busy learning Pig Latin. This is going to be a real uphill fight.

4 You talk as if I HAVE a Republican senator (Gordon Smith doesn't count) or congressman. I'm from Oregon, remember?

5 My condolences, Brian B. On the plus side, however, we would love to have you down here in Texas.

6 One of my earliest posts stated (in jest of course) that we should simply abandon the entire west coast to the liberals to let them govern how they see fit. Any liberals would be welcome to live anywhere else they pleased, but they would have to put up with our laws. If they wanted the liberalized version of the US, they'd either have to move to California, Oregon or one of the few existing communist states.

7 I wonder what the odds are that our wonderful beltway reps. will go without a pay raise this year? Although the amount saved would be paltry, it at least would be symbolic.

8 Either way, we have to pay for it. This is one of those s##t happens things - we have all experienced same situations in our own personal lives. Funding is longterm as is the funding solutions. Arguing about how now after just a few weeks is meaningless. What we need now is an honest cost assetment of the damages and honest good accountants - always in short supply in government - local state or federal regardless of persuasion.

9 It is great that the news of what these conservative representatives want to do is getting out, but unfortunately the Republican leadership in Congress is not too happy about even talking about cutting the pork much less doing it.

10 Cutting pork, enforcing immigration laws and being more forward thinking on environment and energy are their weak points. The Republicans we have now, I mean. We can do these things better without becoming extremists as the far left has. The answers to our problems do not require extreme measures. Just realistic ones.

11 My Senator is DICK Durbin. But I'll see what's up with Shimkus.

12 This just illustrates one of the myriad problems with the political slide to the left over the past decades: What with the Dhimmicrats acting in a manner that would make Nikita Kreuschev seem sane and pro-American by comparison, the Republicans have basically found that they can just coast most of the time and behave, (and vote), in a manner as unoffensive to media as they can manage. Theirs is generally a "don't rock the boat" policy, which is why they will neither fight the Dhimmis, nor support the President or the military. I think that for this reason, Congress needs about a 95% turnover as soon as can be managed. Throw the bums out.

13 On the plus side, however, we would love to have you down here in Texas. I just got back from Texas. nice people, crappy weather, too flat. Better idea: Move all the Texans here. Best of both worlds. I think Imp is onto something, and I shudder to say this, but maybe a stronger, healthier, more rational left is exactly what we need to make conservatives act like, you know, conservatives.

Posted by: Brian B at September 27, 2005 05:06 PM (CouWh)

14 Yes Brian, that's it in a nutshell; the Dhimmis' behavior is so outrageous that the Republicans can do pretty much nothing and still look good by comparison. They also seem resigned to letting Hitlary win in '08. What a bunch of milksops. THROW. THE. BUMS. OUT.

Posted by: Improbulus Maximus at September 27, 2005 06:05 PM (0yYS2)

15 Brian, I don't think Oregon is ready for a bunch of rowdy Texans to hit town. My, my, what a doing that would be, as my grandma used to say.
