U.S. Retains Control of Internet Traffic

(Tunis, Tunisia) Some members of the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society wanted to transfer control of Internet traffic from the United States to the United Nations. They failed.

From Reuters:

The United States will keep control of the domain-name system that guides online traffic under an agreement on Wednesday seen as a setback to efforts to internationalise one of the pillars of the Internet.

Negotiators at the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society said they had agreed to set up a forum to discuss "spam" e-mail and other Internet issues and explore ways to narrow the technology gap between rich and poor countries.

But oversight of the domain-name system will remain with the United States, a setback for the European Union and other countries that had pushed for international control of one of the most important technical aspects of the Internet.

The European Union said in a statement that the agreement would lead to "further internationalisation of Internet governance, and enhanced intergovernmental cooperation to this end."

This is good news. I foresee nothing but chaos if the UN or the EU were put in charge.

1 That would be fun with the Internet being down for weeks because some African warlord forgot to reset the servers.

4 Let me see. We invent the computers. We cause the internet. We get it started. And someone else wants to control it. Nothing ever changes.

5 If anyone's interested - ghost's man-behind-curtain heroic source of information and beliefs is a man named Kurt Nimmo based out of New Mexico. uruknet is part of the radical fringe new-age western socialist/communist movement. net itself is heavily associated with remnants of Saddam's Baathist regime in exile (in Europe no less). Kurt is a trip. He & they are all over the map with conspiracies and global issues. Take a peak - its kinda funny. Oh - and they loathe libs too. It's really qiute funny.

6 Today the Greyrooster and snooter will go to a certain city in La. and bitch slap the same raghead at the same convenience store as last year. We have been getting the same reports about him as last year. Only reason we allow the worm to stay is that it's funny to watch his store. He has big signs on his gas pumps that say pay first. If you are white or asian you can pull up and the pump will be turned on. If you are black you must go inside and pay first. Racist? Or is he reacting to something in the past? Or is reacting to reality (driveoffs)? Or is this a fair muslim????? Since whites and asians have never left without paying why should they be punished for what members of another race do? Maybe we won't bitch slap him today. Just a good talking to.

8 Thank goodness. The UN couldn't even oversee a few billion dollars meant to care for children and families in Iraq. Why would we give them control of half a trillion websites?

9 Not really 'traffic' but the root name servers.

10 “Further internationalisation of internet governance, and enhanced intergovernmental cooperation to this end” aka chaos of the highest order which the United States will be expected to fix at some point in the future.

11 Graeme: yeah. And it'll be all our fault for not divining the future.

12 What actual use does the domain-name-control-thingamagic have? Stuff like "No, it can't be ihatej0000s.se unless it's a company in Sweden. We suggest ihatej0000s.com"?

13 Thankfully, we get to avoid the Internet For Food scandal that was sure to follow.

17 We are the U.N. We are N.A.T.O. Well, at least we fund more than two thirds of it. If they try to take it than we should cut off U.N. funding. The U.N. will die the next day. If that is too much then give them the internet. It's old anyway. We will switch to IPv6. We will prevail, meanwhile the rest of the world doesn't have the work ethic to manage the damn thing. Either way we win.

18 Lonely, you fail to take into account the fact that they don't need to manage it, they can hire American educated IT professionals like construction foremen hire day laborers on the streets of LA. All modern dictatorships depend upon the free world for the tools and skills they need to survive.

19 Raghead at the so called conveinence store, swears to Allah that he never said anything bad about Americans, Christians, Jews or Shites. "Everyone lies about me. I am good man, I works hard. I never short change people". Next week we will return and talk to him again. This time we will hide a tape recorder in the chips next to the register and see what he says after we leave. Works every time. Play back is a riot. Sort of like letting the air out of a ballon.
