Top Zarqawi Aide Captured

- Novnite

US-led multinational forces have detained a key leader in the Muslim militant network in Iraq headed by al Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the U.S. military said Saturday. Abdul Aziz Sa'dun Ahmed Hamduni, also known as Abu Ahmed, had also served as the deputy of the top Mosul militant leader identified as Abu Talha, the statement said. "Abu Ahmed admitted to receiving money and weapons from Abu Talha as well as coordinating and conducting terrorist attacks in Mosul, the statement said. It said Hamduni was detained on December 22. "The capture of Abu Ahmed, and the subsequent capture of Abu Marwan on 23 December, show significant progress in the inevitable destruction of the Abu Talha-led Al-Qaeda-Zarqawi terrorist network in Mosul," said U.S. Brig. Gen. Erwin Lessel, spokesman for Multi-National Forces-Iraq, in the statement. Earlier in the week the Emirate newspaper al-Bayane reported that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, declared "target number one in Iraq" by the US authorities, has been arrested in the city of Baakuba.

I heard this on Fox News earlier today but have been unable to find an article on it until Novinite. The arrest of Abu Talha means one of two things. Either we recieved a tip and caught him or this was the result of the arrest of Zarqawi. Right now the arrest of Abu Mossab al-Zarqawi is just a rumor, however there could be more truth to the rumor with the arrest of a top aide of Zarqawi's.

Perhaps the greatest terrorist arrest in the past year was that of Muhammad Naeem Noor Khan, a computer and communications expert operating inside of Pakistan. Following the arrest of Khan, the CIA found and broke Al Qaida's code, arrested several other Al Qaida operatives, found out Al Qaida was contacting sleeper cells in the United States and England arrested more than eight connected to a plot inside of England. Clearly the arrest of only one terrorist led to a treasure trove of information.

While the arrest of Zarqawi would presumably lead to the arrest of Abu Ahmed. If Zarqawi has not been captured, it could very well work in reverse. Each time a terrorist is arrested rather than killed, it is a far greater accomplishment based upon the intelligence that can be gathered from the captured terrorist. The intelligence can save lives as well as help the U.S. and Coallition forces find and capture more terrorists.

1 I would just like to comment briefly on the earlier post about the Tsunami being sort of a payback for the "fornicators". Indulge my ignorance for a moment, will you. It is my understanding that the terrorists, or "insurgents", are recruiting suicide bombers left and right and promising them a free trip to the Holy Land if they sacrifice themselves in the name of this "Allah" character. Upon arrival, they are to receive 72 virgins. What are these "warriors" going to do with 72 virgins? Fornicate, possibly? Perform devious sexual acts, possibly? Or are they just going to hang out? Let me get this straight "Fornicate and die": or "die to fornicate"? Seems like a bunch of BS to me....

2 Not for anything, but how long is Rusty's vacation, anyway? Jesus, he's been gone for weeks.

3 It just seems to me that we've arrested or killed many different people who are supposedly the top aides to Zarqawi. How many TOP AIDES does he have anyway? If we have him; show him, let us know. Yes, I know they are all over the world but I'd like to see more of them chained in a row in an orange jumpsuit on their way to those special cells in that secret jail at Gitmo including a 6 foot one, who really doesn't stick out over there; their size is no different than ours. I want some really really good news. I know we'll get there but the sooner the better. Cindy

4 Laura, College breaks are usually 6 weeks, sometimes longer and yup, he's been gone, what, 4 weeks already? He promised to bring his laptop but he lied. :-) If he doesn't get back soon, he may not have a blog to come back to... Cindy

6 They talked? What about their commitment to jihad and such? They must have threatened them with women's undergarments. My question has always been, do the virgins get a say in the deal? And who came up with 72? It seems that 63 would be more than enough.

7 Roger, it's all in the Kuran/Quran. The hard core islamists use in as a weapon of destruction and as far as they go, if a member of the family does a suicide bombing, not only does he go to paradise, but those of his family goes to Paradize. Very strange religion; the more infidels they kill, the better. Roger and Richardo: One thing about this war is there are no lines drawn since the terrorist are dressed just like a regular civilian. I still think tho that those in Iraqi dress makes it hard to tell the difference. Our troops have it quite difficult. On Wizbang, and the discussions, tomipoo, focus, there are discussions going on there regarding the radical islamic part of the Kuran. Some leaders are trying to rewrite it, taking out the violent part of it but I doubt that is going to change much since violence is built in these extremest Islamist who made it home and not to a hero's welcome - which make them feel just awful, which is why everyone that comes home should come home to a heroes welcome despite your personal feelings about war. They all should be treated with respect, gr gatitude and honor. Always. We cannot let happen to any of those soldiers what happened in the Vietnam era. We've learned a lot from these terrorists - just wish more we could blow themselves up as they make the bombs i their home. Their hero of the Kuran was a warrier and the terrorists are following in his footsteps. It's strange that Jesus walked through this area of the world but it didnt take but Allah/Mohammed did take; so does that make these people inherently evil? So Roger, that's where they are getting it from. Kill the infidels but many that have been killed are also Muslim and people from other countris who are also Islamic, so right now this point, they do not seem to care about the religious affiliation of the people they nab. Yesterdy, 2 Lebonese were kidnapped and I wonder how well they are trained so that they can resist such actions and stand up against those who are destroying their country and their infrastrure.
