Three Christians Await Execution in Indonesia

If these guys are guilty of involvement in a massacre that killed over 200--mostly women and children, let me volunteer my services for the firing squad. However, the Indonesian court system is based on Islamic law and, as we have noted here on several occasions, is a complete sham. Not a single Muslim has been brought to justice for the killing of Christians during the same period--even though far more Christians were killed in the sectarian violence than Muslims. Not. A. Single. One.

Dog Pundit has more.
VOA:

Three Christian militants sentenced to death for killing Muslims during sectarian violence that shook Indonesia's Sulawesi island six years ago may be executed this month. Supporters of the three men say they are not guilty, and are being used as scapegoats.

The three Indonesian Catholic men, Fabianus Tibo, Dominggus de Silva and Marinus Riwu, were convicted of killing Muslims during Muslim-Christian clashes in the central Sulawesi town of Poso in 2000.

The men have exhausted most avenues to stop their execution, two higher courts and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono have rejected their appeals.

But the chief attorney for the three men, Stefanus Roy Rening, says they are still waiting for a reply from Mr. Yudhoyono on a second clemency appeal, filed last month.

He says all three men are innocent and being used as scapegoats in an unfair justice system. He also says the three are not the masterminds of the Poso violence, which is why they should not be executed.

The men are convicted of a massacre of more than 200 unarmed people, mostly women, children and students, who were shot and hacked to death while hiding in a Muslim school. It was one of the worst incidents in the clashes between Muslims and Christians that claimed more than 1,000 lives.

But the three deny being at the scene of the killings, and police are investigating 16 other men as the real masterminds of the massacre.

1 The TRUE face of islam can be seen in countries where it is the majority religion. In the West, where islam is in the minority, you get a very false picture of islam and muslims, because whenever they are in the minority they tow the line and put their best foot forward. Behold islam.

2 Not only is islam the religion of peace, but also of equal justice and enlightened objectivity for everyone..........What a country! We could n't bomb islam back to the stone age, because they never left it.

3 Hey I've got an idea. If the "government" of Indonesia is just another Islamist gang, why should anyone listen to it? Good job to the Christians. I don't share their silly faith but at least they know the proper way to deal with fascists.

5 Indonesian law is not based on Islamic law, it is based on Dutch law with some revisions having been made over time. There are some attempts to introduce aspects of Islamic law but these mainly occur at the local level.

6 The world will be better off when all the muslims are exterminated. Islam is a weapons-grade virus that cannot be made safe, and must be wiped out.

7 Indonesian law is not based on Islamic law, it is based on Dutch law with some revisions having been made over time. But apparently the Indonesian government selectively decides when to apply that Dutch law (only against christians)-- that's the islam part.

9 Independtly of the awe I have at the ideas of the massacres that were conducted by both sides in Sulawesi, I want to stress the issue of death penalty. It is certainly not a way to solve the violence, especially political or community violence by creating three martyrs. Also, the trials were not really fair, with the presence of an angry armed crowd intimidating the court and their lawyers. Execution of these men would also kill some useful witnesses if some other persons were to be tried in conjunction with these acts. Finally, execution is a blattant violation of human rights as a cruel treatment negating the right to life. (You may find more information in the attached website). I believe that Indonesia should join all the countries that have abolished this cruel penalty and as a first step comute these death penalties to life in prison.
