The Shaheed That Wasn't

I've held off posting about this because this is the Jawa Report, one of the premier counter-terrorism blogs in the 'sphere, and by the time I have a chance to post about something counterterrorism, it's usually already been covered. Which should explain why I spend most of my posts here being the Imperial Court Jester.

Well, every dog has his day, I guess.

Turns out the story about the attempted suicide in Gitmo was more attempted than suicide:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ten Guantanamo prisoners lured U.S. guards into a cell with a staged suicide attempt, then attacked them with light fixtures, fan blades and other improvised weapons while guards fired rubber balls and used a grenade launcher to subdue them, U.S. officials said on Friday.

The blog-grandfather
(stein hoist for the Reuters link) speculates that it coincides with the reported release of 16 Saudi prisoners.

I think it has more to do with the simple fact that Gitmo is populated with people who want to kill Americans no matter what. Either that, or the inmates heard about the so-called UN Human Rights Commission demand that Gitmo be shut down, and tried to create an international outcry.

So sad that they were betrayed by of all sources, MargaReuterville.

Stein hoist to co-blogger Bluto for the MSNBC link. Dude, you should update and stuff.

1 Is it smart to bring out this kind of news? Here we have a group of detainees trying to capture their guards, maybe with the idea of killing one. This gives the image that even in captivity they still fight us, and thereby boosting moral of others still out there. If they were fighting in Chechnya and captured, the Russians will throw them into a stinking pit with no water no food no healthcare no reading and no contact to family members. And if you do not talk quickly enough they throw in a hand grenade, and then the next detainee is thrown in, standing on and between the body parts of his fellow comrade! Till that pit is full! Guantanamo Bay is not a bad place to be, Hadji!

2 No Dan, the right-wingers say that news should be suppressed at all costs ...
