The Science of 'STAR WARS'

I thought I'd point out an interesting article from MSNBC about the science inspired by the movies. Enjoy!

It's as ridiculous to point out the scientific "slips" of Star Wars as it would be to point out the unrealism of LOTR. It's meant to be believable, not real.

I don't think that was the point of the piece...I read it as an homage to the technology that was inspired by the films, not as a slam on what Lucas got wrong. Maybe I'm not reading it as critically...

A related take on this is at: http://www.intuitor.com/moviephysics/ "...The Matrix has not just become a popular movie but also a somewhat popular insanity defense. " Read their movie reviews.

'Star Wars' Raises Questions on US Policy http://www.commondreams .org/cgi-bin/print.cgi?file=/headlines05/0517-07.htm “Without Michael Moore and "Fahrenheit 9/11" at the Cannes Film Festival this time, it was left to George Lucas and "Star Wars" to pique European ire over the state of world relations and the United States' role in it. Lucas' themes of democracy on the skids and a ruler preaching war to preserve the peace predate "Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith" by almost 30 years. Yet viewers Sunday — and Lucas himself — noted similarities between the final chapter of his sci-fi saga and our own troubled times. Cannes audiences made blunt comparisons between "Revenge of the Sith" — the story of Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side and the rise of an emperor through warmongering — to President Bush's war on terrorism and the invasion of Iraq. Two lines from the movie especially resonated: "This is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause," bemoans Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) as the galactic Senate cheers dictator-in-waiting Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) while he announces a crusade against the Jedi. "If you're not with me, then you're my enemy," Hayden Christensen's Anakin — soon to become villain Darth Vader — tells former mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). The line echoes Bush's international ultimatum after the Sept. 11 attacks, "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."”

Greg, What the $%## does this crap have to do with the science of STAR WARS? Or aren't you capable of reading AND comprehension?

Posted by: Matt Hurley at May 17, 2005 03:01 PM (vQcWL)

Matt, It's a little off topic but no one is commenting on your post anyways. Remember, the Empire Strikes Back!

Nobody cares about your leftist tripe either, but that doesn't seem to stop you...

Yum, leftist tripe is a Roman specialty!

There are MUCH better Italian food choices than that...

I should think you blood lusting Zionazis would delight in feasting upon the bowels of a leftist.

"bloof lusting Zionazi" - You don't know anything about me, dude...so stop slandering me. And I find leftists tend not to lead cleanly lifestyles, so I can't imagine that I'd find their particular crud all that tasty...

One thing about the Matrix and such. I saw a medical show on the Science channel where they had a quadrapaligic man who had an operation on his brain to place in his head some inputs that could be used to move a cursor around on a computer kind of like how a cursor is moved by a mouse or trackball. Well later on they showed the same man with his matrix like output on his head moving around a prostectic hand wired into the output in his head. The neurologists explained that they had found the centers in the brain that control hand/arm motion and where working on creating ways in which people who have severed nerves that cause paralysis to beable to have some sense of a life again. Very facinating stuff.

Hmmm...great ideas from Star Wars: 1.) Let corporate America arm themselves with a droid army like the trade federation. Then they can do all the covert crap the press won't let our military get away with. 2.) Black, floaty ball droids with horse needles flying around Gitmo. It would certainly be more humane than, say, having a female soldier flash her ankle or neck at a prisoner.

Is New 'Star Wars' an Anti-Bush Diatribe? http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/national/2005/05/17/Arts/starbush050517.html CANNES - "Since Revenge of the Sith debuted at Cannes on Sunday, Star Wars creator George Lucas has been answering questions about the movie's political subtext. The question on the minds of many people who have seen the new film: does it contain rhetorical jabs aimed at U.S. President George W. Bush? " The Empire Strikes Back!

Again, I ask you...what the heck does this leftist crapola have to do with the SCIENCE of STAR WARS??? There were folks having a pleasant conversation that ws actually relevant...

Posted by: Matt Hurley at May 18, 2005 09:55 AM (vQcWL)

Matt, This site is devoted to Star Wars and to glorifying the current war. I should think it would be of interest for you all to know that Lucas is against the war and has taken potshots at the war and at Bush in Episode 3. How ironic for you all. Do continue with your pleasant conversation.

Greg, One problem with that...Lucas has contridicted himself so many times on this subject, that nobody but you cares what he thinks about Iraq. He said over and over again that STAR WARS was about Vietnam and Richard Nixon (never mind that it was JFK who got is into the war and LBJ who lost it through his micromanagement)...

Matt, You address me as if you assume I'm a Democrat. I'm a Libertarian Catholic. I hate both major parties. I can heap a mountain of crap on both of them. But stick with the majors if you like and support their spending us into oblivion.

Posted by: greg at May 18, 2005 10:37 AM (/+dAV)

What I assume is that you aren't for taking down evil dictators like Saddam Hussein...which, if you can live with that and still look yourself in the mirror while calling yourself a human being, that's okie-day by me...I assume nothing else about you. You can call yourself a libertarian if you want, but if it talks like a jawa and smells like a jawa...it's pretty much a jawa in my book. What I find interesting is that when I say that Lucas' views are off topic, I get lectured about how the site is all about STAR WARS and stuff; but when I refute the actual bile being spewed, I'm criticized for making assumptions based on your postings.

“While premiering his film, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, at the Cannes Film Festival George Lucas was asked if his new film was a social commentary on George Bush and the Iraq invasion (which even our own government admits is part of America's new "kindly, helpful and loving" imperialism). How can they not ask this when Darth Vader says to his former teacher Obi-Wan Kenobi, "if you're not with me, then you're my enemy." Remember that Lord Bush, after the 9/11 attacks said, "either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists." Lucas responded to the reporters by saying that the original Star Wars was developed in the early post-Veitnam War era shortly after Richard Nixon left office amidst a byzantine scandal. He continued by saying, "The issue was, how does a democracy turn itself into a dictatorship...When I wrote it, Iraq (the U.S.-led war) didn't exist.. but the parallels of what we did in Vietnam and Iraq are un believable ...I didn't think it was going to get this close." Speaking about present day America he said, "I hope this doesn't come true in our country."” http://www.infowars.com/articles/ps/darth_nwo.htm

Don't you suppose that Lucas is trying to create contrioversy to generate "buzz" for this movie? He's speaking to the FRENCH press for crying out loud...they actually liked that craptacular Michael Moore "fake but accurate" (in his own mind and the fever swamp left) mockumentary. Of course he's going to trash America and President Bush on foreign soil...that's what leftist airheads do. What's to debate here...Lucas is an idiot. I love how this leftist windbag goes on about trade federations and banking guilds when he is the king of franchise marketing...of course, his target is kids too.

How ironic that this site bases itself on Star Wars if in fact, "Lucas is an idiot" as Matt says.

Posted by: greg at May 18, 2005 11:59 AM (/+dAV)

While I won't speak for Rusty, I'll say that I don't think the site is "based" on STAR WARS, I think Rusty used the STAR WARS universe as an analogy in order to explain things in an entertaining way. I don't have a problem with that and experience nocognitive dissonance in accepting that Rusty chose this analogy while at the same time knowing that Lucas is an idiot. Since you seem bent on getting the last word, you shall have it...for whatever it is worth.....

It it not a contridiction to disagree with a particular person while still enjoying their work. While I personlly find Lucas not all that cool. I love his work. I would not elect him president but I would probably see the flick. Why do I suddenly find myself thinking greg is OK??? Wierd. I think the use of the terms "jawa" and "star wars" a blog masterpiece. How many searches with those terms will be run this week and how many people will click on this site just for the hell of it??. My answer. A bunch. Hell type Star Wars a few more times maybe a few more posters will turn up.
