Halifax and NatWest banks have led the move to scrap the time-honoured symbol of saving from being given to children or used in their advertising, the Daily Express/Daily Star group reported today.
Muslims do not eat pork, as Islamic culture deems the pig to be an impure animal.Salim Mulla, secretary of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, backed the bank move."This is a sensitive issue and I think the banks are simply being courteous to their customers," he said

I am offended that they have taken the piggy banks away. Ever since I was born, the piggy bank has been an integral part of my life since we have always stored money inside. Now, I must store it in my bra. Oh, the humanity!

The miserable buggers stopped giving them away free over 20 years ago. this is just an excuse to justify why they're such penny pinching bastards.
Nat West gave away a family of branded piggy banks away with their new accounts back in the 80's. These are now collecters items & sell for loadsa money. Nat west has complained that they don't get any of that money on a number of occasions.
Over the past 5 years I've opened new accounts for myself & my kids in both banks & no piggy banks were forthcoming then. IMO this story is either misreported or possibly fabricated.

Actually "good" Muslims normally use their own banks, because they do not want to earn interest on their money:

This is looking more and more like maybe a fabricated story. It's posted in the "religionnewsblog" and links to the Daily Telegraph.au index page which has nothing on the story. I did Google searches for some of the text that was ostensibly copied and pasted into the post and found nothing. Unless Google hasn't indexed it yet. That remains to be seen. I even searched the Telegraph's archives for the text string "piggy bank" - nothing.
There's enough evil going on right now with real Muslim fanatics without having to make stupid stuff up like this.

Golly gee. The people of Jewish heritage have the same prohibitions. So why is it now that everyone is concerned with pig-stuff? Could it be that the recently anti-pig Brits are fearful because violence has been threatened by those of the Moslem faith? Who has renounced these threats? I am from England, & as said previously, they don't give piggy banks away anymore anyway.
the Australian assoc press may have run the story, but that doesn't make it any more true! I can not find ANY reference to this in the British press, or on the Nat-west/Halifax websites - & I am a customer of both!
Also, with the current mood in Britain, such a move would likely bank-rupt said banks, as muslims only make up 4% of the British population, & we just love voting with our feet when it comes to financial institutions, France or British traditions (which we would consider th piggy bank to be).

A West Yorkshire head teacher has banned books containing stories about pigs from the classroom in case they offend Muslim children.
The literature has been removed from classes for under-sevens at Park Road Junior Infant and Nursery School in Batley.

I'm lucky enough to be in an area of the M.E. where I can wear civvies once in a while. I have a Pink Floyd T-shirt that features a big ol' pink pig on the front. I'm positive that the locals have seen me wear it, but haven't heard of any angry seething and gnashing of teeth........yet. Are they just more tolerant of Western symbols here? Maybe it's because I'm armed.
