Using an old Sith mind trick, I was able to convince the powers that be to put me on the Academic Appeals Committee. Students with weak minds and lame excuses beware! Blogging will be light.

You: "These are not the grades you are looking for."
Student: "These are not the grades I am looking for."
You: "Move along."
Student: [nods head] "Dude."

A very good standard is the old "I'll accept any excuse I've never heard before." After three years of teaching, I've found that now I only get reruns.

OT: Damn, that's a shameless "blogroll me" link at the bottom of every post.

Me: "I am not a shameless Blogger"
Chaos: "You are not a shameless Blogger"

Jedi Mindtricks don't work on Hutts or Academia.

More like:
You: "I am not a shameless Blogger"
Chaos: "You are not a shameless Blogger"
[pause]
Chaos: "You are a
totally shameless Blogger."

And Brian's right: quals and the dissertation defense are like the Jedi trials -- I'm immune to your silly mind tricks.

Actually, by comparing you to Hutts, I was implying that the reason you are immune is because you have to have a mind in order for it to be tricked.

Me to student: "I percieve the force is strong in you, but you are too old to start the training...yes, too old."

I went back to college in my mid-thirties, raising two boys, taking care of my household, sick, carrying 18 credits a semester, taught about 1/3rd the classes I was in and in four years finished four programs, was only allowed 2 associates although I finished 4 associates, graduated with a 3.98 average. I worked two jobs, volunteered for the deaf there that was attached to and was part of the college and wrote the best thesis a teacher ever read in his 20 years teaching there as a professor. Who knew I'd get so disabled and all the time and effort and work wasted? So definitely do not put up with kids with weak minds and lame excuses.

Just remember to give lots of credit for effort. It should matter at least as much, if not more, than actual demonstration of command of the material.
