Howdy folks.
I mean, if there was a state-funded program to distribute bibles to every prisoner in a state prison, they'd blow a gasket.

Excellent point. What has happened to all these organizations who used to simply be champions of human rights? Over time they've become political wings of radical beliefs. They've become discriminatory. The change has been subtle over the years, but they've finally crossed the line between advocacy and bigotry. Their focus has changed from equality to double standards.

There are jurisdiction problems with gitmo. There is also the problem that this would pass strict scrutiny, given the compelling reason (interrogation) and very limited accomodation given.

doesn't seem to make them keep their mouths shut on any other issue.

You don't get it See-Dub. I believe the Korans were paid for by an NEA grant. Flushing Korans is the latest in avante guard performance art!

See-Dubya:'I mean, if there was a state-funded program to distribute bibles to every prisoner in a state prison, they'd blow a gasket.'
No way!
Only if Bibles were forced on people who didn't want them, would the ACLU care.

How naive. This is a classic separation of church and state issue. The U.S. army is clearly establishing islam here. The government is promoting islam by spending money on Korans but not Bibles.

ACLU Applauds Supreme Court Ruling Protecting Religious Liberty in Prisons (05/31/2005)
WASHINGTON -- "The American Civil Liberties Union today applauded an unusual unanimous vote by the Supreme Court upholding the constitutionality of a federal law that requires states to allow prisoners to practice their religious beliefs."

In addition, the arrows on the cell floors pointing to Mecca are clearly giving a competitive advantage to the Kingdom, at the expense of, say, Toledo Ohio.

greg,
the case in question there was Cutter v. Wilkinson. John Cutter, the plaintiff, is an avowed Satanist. That explains the ACLU's interest.

'Possessed' nun crucified after row with priest
By Kate Connolly in Berlin
(Filed: 20/06/2005)
“A Romanian Orthodox priest who faces a murder charge after ordering the crucifixion of a young nun because she was "possessed by the devil" was unrepentant as he conducted a funeral mass for his alleged victim.
Father Daniel Corogeanu, 29, said that the nun had been "possessed by the devil" and was "beyond salvation" in life.
He claimed that from the religious point of view, the crucifixion of Maricica Irina Cornici, 23, was "entirely justified", but admitted that he faced excommunication as well as prosecution, and was seeking a "good lawyer."
The nun was found dead last Wednesday, gagged and chained to a cross, after nuns from her order, the Holy Trinity, called for an ambulance in the remote mountain village of Tanacu in north-eastern Romania.”

Carlos,
I don't have time to check you on that, although I should. But, it's irrelevant. The case is a broad judicial ruling that applies to ALL religions, including our beloved Christianity. So it was a good ruling and the ACLU had their fingers in the cake. They are to be congratulated. And maybe I'm not as naive as you claim. For you to sugggest that the ACLU was only interested in the case because they are pro-Satan is laughable. I know you got away with this sort of shit while I was gone, but I'm back now brotha.

Greg: Carlos is right. Go ahead and check. But you're right too. If they were going to allow traditional religions to be practiced, they really have to allow all. I only have a problem with supplying them all the materials for their religious rights and the way it can disrupt institutional routines. These guys are in prison, not a friggin hotel. I must admit I also have a problem with the ACLU's long silence until a satanist speaks up.

Wacky Romania story. What kind of legitimate religious order lets someone become a nun after three months? IT TAKES YEARS. Something's up.

Should they allow the guy to practice satanism? Only in an insane world. Which we have.

YBP,
When I was a postdoc, our Canadian lab tech was a witch. She claimed her sister and mother had the witches' teet (a third tit).
She freaked me out!

Carlos,
If you still want to fuck with some libs, go to:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wrh/
There is a message board that you can post to. There are currently only 45 posting members, but there are many readers.
You'll encounter some of the same people that came over during the Morgan Reynolds postÂ…

IÂ’m sorry I canÂ’t be of more help, but preaching to the choir is not any fun for me, so I really donÂ’t know any great lib sites where you can post.

The ACLU should also be upset at how our soldiers are forced to treat the koran as if it is some kind of special book. Baloney! It should be given the same treatment as any other book, and those kooks down there at Gitmo should be fed the same food as everyone else. By giving them special food, special prayer times and rugs, etc., the government is saying that their religion is superior. This only encourages the idiots!
