RIP: America's Deputy - Don Knotts Dies At 81

fife.jpg

From the LA Times:
Don Knotts, the saucer-eyed, scarecrow-thin comic actor best known for his roles as the high-strung small-town deputy Barney Fife on the 1960s CBS series "The Andy Griffith Show" and the leisure-suit-clad landlord Ralph Furley on ABC's '70s sitcom "Three's Company," has died. He was 81.

Knotts, who lived in West Los Angeles, died Friday night of lung cancer at a Los Angeles hospital, according to Sherwin Bash, his longtime manager.

When I was a kid our TV got only two stations. One of them carried The Andy Griffith Show. The world will be a less interesting place without Deputy Barney Fife.

2 I suppose I have watched every black and white Andy Griffith episode at least 100 times, yet I never tire of the back and forth banter between Andy and Barney during those times they were together at the jail. I have laughed and laughed thousands of times. What a great show! Don, rest in peace, knowing that you have made so many people happy and blessed so many with the great gift of laughter. Go with God, Don!

3 Yep.. the Andy Griffith Show was like an oasis for me. And Don Knotts was awesome. They had some real strange characters in Mayberry. One of my favorites was Floyd, the barber. Gawd he was strange. We used to call him Pink Floyd. But Don Knotts was the greatest and I'll never forget him.

4 I was in a really good mood until I read about Mr Knotts passing. The Andy Griffith Show was THE funniest show ever (OK, so was Seinfeld...)

5 Truly a sad day. I really loved Don Knotts. I watched The Andy Griffith Show when I was in elementary school. (I am over 50 now!) -- gunjam

6 For about the past year or so I've been watching the reruns daily on TV Land. He was the perfect Barney. I thought I was a little wierd not getting tired of the show's character humor and wholesome entertainment. Not now tho. I didn't even know Knotts was still alive, I can't remember anything about him after Three's Company.

9 We've just recently lost four 60's comedy icons. (Don Adams from "Get Smart," Bob Denver from "Giligan's Island," Al Lewis from "The Munsters," and Now Don Knotts.) Very sad.

10 Bummer: My dad too me to Apple Dumpling Gang. If Andy's on, I'm watching it. They don't make em like that anymore. Plus I'm in love with Thelma Lou too.

11 Sad, but think of this......... Barn will still be chasing Earnest T. Bass (Howard Morris) up there. Earnest T. must have a plethora of glass panes to throw rocks at.

12 I personally will miss America's Favorite Deputy. He made us laugh with his antics, but his heart was always in the right place.

15 BARNEY WAS THE EPITOME OF HUMANITY. THERE IS JUST NO WAY TO DESCRIBE THE WONDERFUL FEELING I EXPERIENCED WHILE WATCHING THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW. IT WAS SOFT RAIN AND MELLOW SUNSHINE, IT WAS YOUTHFUL DAYS AT PLAY, IT WAS HOME AND PARENTS AND EVERYTHING WONDERFUL. MOST OF ALL, IT WAS BARNEY, I WOULD LOVED TO HAVE LIVED IN MAYBERRY AND BEEN AQUAINTED WITH ALL THE CHARACTERS. GO WITH GOD, DON KNOTTS.

16 Dear Don Knotts, Thank you for the many memories. Thank you for being you! We will all miss you dearly; however, you live through the Andy Griffith show. Always remember that you and Andy will always be the model of my life, and more importantly, my idols. We will all see you on the other side my friend....and do look forward to that day!!!
