Religion of Putting You in Jail (or worse) for Blasphemy Update

From fellow Jawa blogger Mike Pechar:

A high school chemistry teacher in Qassim Province, Muhammad al-Harbi (aka Mohammed Salamah Al Harbi), faced blasphemy charges after his students and fellow teachers filed legal complaints against him for questioning and ridiculing Islam, discussing the Bible and defending Jews.

In Bukairia, north of Riyadh, al-Harbi was convicted in court before Judge Abdullah Dakhil who sentenced him to 40 months in prison and public flogging of 750 lashes. Al-Harbi was also banned from teaching.

Washington Times (via Robert Spencer):
Last month, on opposite sides of the globe, two assaults on the freedom of speech began. In Afghanistan, the editor of "Women's Rights" magazine was convicted on "blasphemy" charges after a religious adviser to President Hamid Karzai accused the editor of publishing two "un-Islamic" articles: one criticizing the Islamic practice of punishing adultery with 100 lashes; the other arguing that leaving Islam wasn't a crime....

Indeed, it does, but that same constitution also guarantees that no law may contradict the law of Islam. And the law of Islam says no messing with Islam. And that's not all: Since March 2004, a new media law signed by President Karzai outlaws anything Islamically "insulting." In other words, hello totalitarian practices, goodbye protections and freedoms. And goodbye Ali Mohaqiq Nasab, the "blaspheming" editor sentenced to two years in jail. By all accounts, this was getting off easy: The prosecutor in the case was angling for a death sentence.

Heh, but there is no relationship between Islam and tyrrany. None. What. So. Ever. Move along.....nothing to see here.....

1 So does this mean the elections in Afghanistan were not as successful as we had hoped? Jawa report 09/23/2004 The problem isn't so much in their religion as that their culture is somewhat lacking in modern social development. Sort of like christianity about 500 years ago. If we want to change them we really have to start at the educational level, schools and radios will help. Democracy maybe just a little too complex for them at this point.

2 If it were 'culture' then you'd expect that in different Muslim cultures blasphemy would be treated differently. For instance, Saudi Arabia would probably be deemed 'Arab culutre', Turkey 'Turkic', Afghanisan 'Afghani', etc. But since in all of these 'cutltures' there is no varriance in religious tolerance (except by virtue of punishment, for instance in one they kill you in the other they put you in jail) than 'culture' cannot be the PRIMARY causal factor for religious intolerance.

3 Yep, John Ryan, their elections turned out about like those in Washington State, Wisconsin, Missouri, Minnesota, and several others here in the US that were decided by mulitple votes from the same person, dead people voting, double counting, just plain ficticious votes, voting places set up in Union Halls with people physically intimidated, assaults and attempted murder of candidates, slashing tires of the opponants vehicles, and votes already on the voting machines, just to name a few of the criminal convictions of people working for and on behalf of the Democratic Party in the last election. No wonder the Democrats support the insurgents and Islamists. They have much in common.

4 It seemed pretty clear to me it wasn't the "culture". Words like "un-Islamic" and Islamically "insulting" only have one meaning. Some people have trouble discerning the difference between culture and religion in Middle Eastern countires becuase they're so intertwined, but they really are two different things.

5 I recommend we give them control of the root servers.

6 There is culture in the Middle East? Outside of Israel. Where?

7 There is culture in the Middle East? Outside of Israel. Where? Well, I hear yogurt's quite popular.

10 John Ryan continues to bring up his favorite saying "Like the Christians were 500 years ago". That's the point you retard. They are 500 years plus behind. The Christians are not longer a danger to others. They have evolved. The muslim assholes you continually make excuses for have not. Hell these raghead cavemen are even a threat to themselves.

11 Do I read everyone correctly that the 'State' should not put people in jail for religious beliefs or infractions? Or that religious beliefs should not be decreed by the government? Or do I read that only evolved religions should be part of government and universally known bad religions should not? Democracy may be just a little too complex for me at this point. But what would we seriously do if the 40,000 muslims in the Detroit suburbs elected enough local officials to establish the daily call to prayer and created the first day of Ramadan as a city holiday? Would we respect democracy in this case? or separation of church and state?
