NBC Reaches Out to Religious Viewers

With a Vicodin-addled Episcopal priest who drives Jesus around in his station wagon. Hey, they ate up the Passion of the Christ, right, so those religious folks will swallow anything with a whiff of incense. Right?

Okie on the Lam fisks an interview with the show's creator.

Does anybody remember Highway to Heaven? That was kind of sappy but at least the writers seemed like they weren't mainly concerned with subverting and mocking traditional ideas of religion.

1 The show sounds perfect for rectus and Smith. Mark my words, the gay dude on the show (like all shows with gay dudes) is the only "non-dysfunctional" person on the show. He's the rock of stability for the poor drug addled priest.

2 Dude, I have to admit The Passion of the Christ screwed me up for days. It was a very upsetting movie. It made me very emotional. Thinking back on it, I went to see it with my daughter and at one particularly heinous scene I covered my eyes and said, "Oh, god***n." My daughter elbowed me in the ribs for that one. Then a few minutes later, I covered my eyes again and said, "Oh, Jesus," and she elbowed me again and threatened to tape my mouth.

3 hey oyster, did it make you want to go out and kill jews? Libs liked to pretend that was the reason they hate the movie so much.

4 Sounds like it might work as a comedy. Or a lil' insight on the trials and tribulations of the vapid, shinking, listless (formerly mainstream) Episcopal Church or the handful of other "hell bent for new-age liberalism" protestant churches. Given Hollywood's idea of religion I'm surprised the this year's "Ghost Whisper" and the past "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" aren't promoted for their spiritual content".

5 Ya know, while it's people like Jim Jones and Jerry Falwell who give modern Christianity a bad name, it's anti-religious idiots like these who give atheists/secular humanists a bad name.

6 moobat: (Shouldn't that be moonbat?) After watching the movie I couldn't understand all the hooplah about the movie portraying Jews in a bad light. I didn't see Jews being so bad as I saw wicked people so concerned with their status quo and so frightened with the possibility that they may lose their control over the people that they took matters into their own hands and destroyed their source of frustration. Looks like they picked the wrong guy. I've never understood the "The-Jews-Killed-Him" belief. It had little to do with religion and everything to do with power and control. Religion was only a convenient cop-out. Wow. Why does this all sound so familiar?

7 So if the Passion didn't lead people to go out and kill jews the way Libs predicted it would, why do Libs still DESPISE the movie and the man who made it?

8 I'm tellin' ya, if Life of Brian didn't do it, then The Passion sure won't either. Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!
