1 I don't get it. If he didn't authorize the release, then why did he obviously give the photos to the military in the first place? To admire his handiwork?

2 I'm guessing: to allow them to use it, though not necessarily w/o cost. Allowing them to "admire" it isn't far off though, and I daresay there's a lot of "cultivating the field" in order to gain access. But that doesn't mean it's A-OK for them to exploit the hell out of the photo without compensating him. My guess, given his sense of mission, is that he'd be more than happy with a token payment. Just something so that the stare decisis isn't "exploit the hell out of every journalist with halfway decent intentions."
