Leftist McCarthyism in the Academy

If you haven't been following how one Professor of History at the University of Northern Iowa has been trying to sink the academic career of Ph.D. student (and good friend of the Jawa Report) Paul Deignan of Info Theory, you should. It seems that Paul had the nerve to make a pro-life argument in the comments section of a liberal blog. And that, says the liberal professor, should disqualify Paul from getting a Ph.D.

Jeff Goldstein has summarized the exchange here along with phone numbers and e-mails of the relevant parties. Go give Paul your support.

Note to fellow non-tenured academic bloggers and graduate students: blog anonymously or risk your career. Yes, it is that bad at the modern university.

1 How can they claim to have free spesch/debates on blogs, if only left thinking people can comment on leftish blogs and only right thinking people can comment on right wing blogs? What's the point? Talk about preaching to the converted! I deliberately look at & comment on blogs that do not think the same way as me, so I can understand their point of view better & sometimes to try and show why my stance is as it is. I don't expect to "convert" anyone, but do have the right to express my views reasonably, and be treated courteously if/when re-buffed. Surely the professor has to justify his decision to someone if it is questioned/appealed? A difference of opinion (political or otherwise) can not be a reason for giving or witholding qualifications.

2 You ought to get in touch with David Horowitz over at Front Page Magazine (www.frontpagemag.com) He's been leading the acedemic freedom movement to expose left-wing professors within the country's colleges and universities.

4 The best thing about the coming breakdown of order in the world is that we will have the freedom to hunt down liberals and hang them by the dozens, as we should be able to do now were it not for this pesky law and order that, ironically, the liberals have been trying to destroy for so long. As they say, be careful what you wish for... If they want a total collapse of law and order, well then, let's give it to them.

5 As a former 31 year resident of Iowa I find this disturbing. To think that part of my tax dollars from the age I started working at age 14 until I moved to Oregon in 2002 went to pay this moron professors salary upsets me. I called both the dept. head's office (Prof. Martin was in a meeting) and the UNI President's office (he was out also) but I did speak to a nice lady at the presiden't office and I voiced my displeasure to her about Hettle's behavior. I also gave her the URL of Paul's blog and also the URL to here at Mypetjawa. I also gave her my name and number and told her to call me if she had any other questions. She said she would forward this info to the university's law dept. Hopefully we can get this Hettle idiot punished for his assinine behavior.

6 You mean, of course, give Paul your support... unless you're in academia. I despair.

7 If what Paul Deignan wrote is cause for banning or worse, the harassment from a jerk prof, almost every post I've ever read from anyone should be banned!
