Kill her quick, she's moving

This is very bad:

A comatose girl beaten with a baseball bat is responding to medical stimuli, officials said Wednesday, a day after Massachusetts' highest court ruled the state could take her off life support.

The state, which has custody, had asked that Haleigh Poutre's ventilator and feeding tube be withdrawn after doctors said she was in an irreversible vegetative state.

Her alleged piece of dirt stepfather allegedly hit her with the bat. He is now in the interesting position of trying to keep her tubes in place, because if the state pulls the tube and she dies, he will be charged with her murder. But as the state is her guardian, the state (specifically the Massachusetts Department of Social Services) can ignore his wishes, finish the job he started of murdering Haleigh, and then throw him in jail for it.

It's not that I'm decrying the rough justice against the stepfather, Jason Strickland. Hell, hang him up for a pinata.

But the state is acting as his accomplice.

This really frightens me. The state shouldn't be pulling the tubes on eleven year old girls. Unlike the Schiavo case, not only has Haleigh not told anyone of her true wishes, but she legally can't make these kind of decisions. There should be a presumption that people, that children, even brain-damaged orphans, ought to live.

But the social services bureaucrats in the State of Massachusetts have decided she must die, and they are preparing to take affirmative acts to carry that decision out.

If she dies, however, the state's accomplice in her murder will not die. Massachusetts decided this year that murderers will not face the death penalty.

Keep Haleigh in your prayers. And keep America in your prayers.

2 She doesn't have much of a life left.

3 There you have it folks. Sometime between popping his new zit and asking dad for the car this morning, an 18 year old has OKÂ’ed the death of a completely helpless human being. What is it about libs and this unquenchable thirst to kill our most helpless citizens?

4 >>>What is it about libs and this unquenchable thirst to kill our most helpless citizens? And how they thirst to save our most hardened evil criminals from their just desserts. What a bizarre worldview.

5 This is OT but I haven't seen it brought up anywhere else: There's a black man named Cory Maye on death row in Mississippi for killing a white cop. Big deal, right? Well, the cop he killed was breaking into his house in the middle of the night, he was raiding the wrong house, and Mr. Maye shot him in self defense. What else would anyone do if they found a man breaking into their house, where their children were sleeping, in the middle of the night? Offer him a beer and a hug? My question is this; where the hell are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, or any other liberal trash? Why haven't all the libtards on this blog made any noise about it? the silence is deafening.

6 Perhaps she could get a videotaped diagnosis from Bill Frist.

7 There is something about assisted suicide and assisted death that brings out the damn nuts. I hope the hell they find themselves in the same position as this little girl is in with the state of Massachusettes as the exucutioner. And I hope they are mentally conscious. Maybe right before they die, they will realize what the hell is going on here. And the other thing that really bothers me about this case is that the state can choose to let the little girl die but cannot exact the same punishment for the beast who murdered her. Damn cluster f... is what it is.

8 Xnay, someone already used that line. Was it you? Or is it a talking point?

9 From the article: "This is exactly the point we were trying to make. What's the rush? Just give her a chance," attorney John Egan said. "Medical science is not that certain. We would hope the whole process will slow down, and everyone will step back and end the compulsion to end her life." This is a fine illustration of the problem of getting lawyers and politicians involved in medical care. Lawyers think in terms of weeks and months; doctors think in terms of hours and days. 3 days on life support is a long time to the people involved (especially the patient). The sort of response you get out of a severely brain-damaged patient is used to judge brain death. Certain responses, such as decerebrate motions, are very ominous signs. You may think (like the lawyer above apparently does) that any response would be a good sign, but some responses point to the fact that the brain has been disconnected from the body. Loss of inhibiting influence from the brain can cause simple motions that have been programmed into the spinal cord to come to the surface as so-called "Lazarus reflexes". If you pith me like Haleigh and bush my fingers on a keyboard, you might see my hands make typing motions. Unless we know what "responses" the hospital is talking about, we don't know enough to criticise them. This is not an uncommon situation. I review about 10 death charts per week at my job in a hospital. In about a quarter of those deaths you get to see some sort of fussing about when the time is right to throw in the towel and let the patient die. This decision is never made casually--it's as serious as you can get--but when the patient's condition meets the criteria you've got to pull the plug. Keeping someone propped up for a few hours to give the family time to assemble at the bedside for the death happens sometimes, but supporting them for days just to satisfy people who neither understand the situation nor even know the patient is out of the question. Frankly, I think this case got singled out for reasons that have nothing to do with medicine. The patient here is a cute little girl who had a life ahead of her rather than an 80-year-old with cancer, which is type of patient that this sad drama plays out for every day in this country.

10 Fuck you Brad. Fuck you very much.

11 For the last god damn fucking time. I AM NOT A LIBERAL. The girl is BRAIN DEAD. She's not alive. She's a vegetable. If I was like that, I would want my family to pull the plug. Being fed through your stomach is crazy. So Jesusland Carlos and Brad, you shut your fucking mouth. You don't know me. Yeah I do have zits. I haven't asked my dad for a car yet though. I failed my driver's test. Haven't gived up yet though. How dare you insult me. I'm not a liberal. I just don't want the poor girl to suffer. Fucking bastards

12 Oh Brad, how I would love to break your back with my baseball bat.

Posted by: George Ramos at January 19, 2006 07:28 PM (5E0ex)

13 George, You are overeacting. Brad made a point, and sometimes you or I can be used as a foile. Don't worry too much about it, and don't get so mad.

14 Hey George, LetÂ’s get a few things straight. I do not get into fights with kids. I am a board member of my son and daughters Little League and of course, fist fights with young ones are not acceptable. Young man, I just wanted you to pause and reflect a bit before we actuallyÂ…yÂ’know did her in. My thoughts were, sort ofÂ…along these linesÂ….. First you would go to school, take in a few classes, recess, hot lunch etc. Then come home and, if you felt the sameÂ… that isÂ… pull the plug on this helpless girl,Â….well then sure, letÂ’s do it. Your convincing arguments in the first two posts have persuaded me that this girl must be killed. Ok, now that homework is done and TV time is over,Â…and you still feel we must kill this girl. GEORGE, IM WITH YA, LETS DO HER!!!!! Note to self: Ask neighbor who works at Northwest Hospital if they have a MALE employee named Shannon. If so, transfer primary and emergency care to Evergreen Hospital ASAP.
