Jawa Vacation: Day 1-2

Hey all, I made it to Kalifornia. It's still here. Seriously. All of it. The land of my birth. Kalifornia, uber alles (ten points for any punk-rocker-wannabe who can succesfully differentiate the major difference between the first version of the song just alluded to and the later remake).

Last night was spent at a Holiday Inn Express. Very nice. The pool was great and the people even more so for not laughing at my pasty-white skin. And you know the best part about staying at your average middle-class motor-lodge?

No European banana-slings around the water!!

Seriously, don't ever stay at a Hostel in the summer. Ever. The only thing worse than a twenty year-old German in a speedo and Birks are a 40 year-old German in a speedo and Birks.

Oh, and the difference between your upscale urban hotel and the hostel? The 40 year old German in the speedo and Birks is actually pretty thin, has a pony-tail, and has recently been bikini waxed.

If you're a red-state American, it's safer to stick with your freeway accesible motor lodge. Day 2 we took the shuttle over to the airport. One of the lesser-known secrets about hotels near airports is they usually have a park-n-fly deal. We actually paid a lot less to spend the night at the hotel and leave the car then we would have just parking the car. Plus the kids love the pool and we didn't have to get up at 3:30 in the morning to make it to the airport on time. Next time you're heading out of town for an extended period of time, check in with the airport hotels.

What started as a good day got worse as it went on. You ever try to drag 3 kids on an airplane? Now imagine taking those three kids on four seperate airplanes. That's right, it took me four airplanes to make it to Los Angeles. Hey, you try making it from Tatooine to LA in less than four planes!

So, we make it to the case de Shackleford here in the beautiful suburbs of LA only to find the air conditioning broken. And let me tell you it's hot.

How hot is it?

Think, Africa hot.

Ok, I'm going to bed Remember, I'm sort of out of the loop for the next few weeks, but if you want to drop me an e-mail I'll be checking that at least once a day.

Asta.

1 I heard that song sang by a country group in Sherman, TX. I can no longer see that song's title without laughing my ass off as a bunch of cowboys trying to rap.

2 Dead Kennedys The first "California Uber Alles" was about Governor Jerry Brown (always smiles but never frowns) The second was about Emperor Ronald Reagan. The Tricky Dicky Screwdriver: 1 part Jack Daniels 2 parts Purple Kool-Aid And a jigger of formaldehyde we got from the jar with Hitler's brain in it we got in the back storeroom.

7 How many rightISH/neocon bloggers are former punk rock kids? Seems like the percentage is way up there. Have you seen Dr. Frank's weblog (MTX)? Not too shabby.
