Iraqi insurgents urge Sunnis to vote, warn Zarqawi

FALLUJA/RAMADI Iraq (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein loyalists who violently opposed January elections have made an about-face as Thursday's polls near, urging fellow Sunni Arabs to vote and warning al Qaeda militants not to attack.

In a move unthinkable in the bloody run-up to the last election, guerrillas in the western insurgent heartland of Anbar province say they are even prepared to protect voting stations from fighters loyal to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of al Qaeda in Iraq.

Graffiti calling for holy war is now hard to find.

Instead, election campaign posters dominate buildings in the rebel strongholds of Ramadi and nearby Falluja, where Sunnis staged a boycott or were too scared to vote last time around.

"We want to see a nationalist government that will have a balance of interests. So our Sunni brothers will be safe when they vote," said Falluja resident Ali Mahmoud, a former army officer and rocket specialist under Saddam's Baath party.

"Sunnis should vote to make political gains. We have sent leaflets telling al Qaeda that they will face us if they attack voters."

This is the most significant development in Iraq since the first election and it's the beginning of the end for the terrorists. The only meaningful ally these murderous scumbags have is turning their back on them and joining the political process. In the very near future al Qaida will become so isolated and marginalized in Iraq as to be completely irrelevant.

2 Oh, but we can't possibly win this war, saith the Democrats. Beginning to look more and more like a win. Now where is that screw em guy when you need him?

3 Cmon.. you guys aren't actually suggesting that the Democrats want us to lose this war just for political advantage {sarc}

4 traderrob, no, of course not. I would never question their patriotism.

6 This'll make thinking up the usual not-so-clever protest slogans far more difficult. "Iraqis out of Iraq" doesn't have a good ring to it.

7 BAGHDAD, Dec. 11, 2005 – Almost 90 percent of Iraqis want to vote in Dec. 15 national elections, according to an Iraqi poll. A total of 89 percent of respondents to the poll indicated they want to vote in the election of a permanent democratic government. The intent to vote is strong across ethnic and religious lines. The Kurds have the highest percentage, with 95 percent telling pollsters that they want to vote. Sunni Arabs have the lowest percentage, but that is still pegged at 87 percent. This will make the MSM and the left hard pressed to continue to spin this using their prevailing narrative. You know the one..... "elections are all well and good except that a significant portion of the population is disenfranchised(Sunnis)so the elections mean nothing blah blah etc etc."

8 Never trust a hippy nor an imman. They just make the rules up as they go along. More fool the liberals that go along with them. I hope the 90% turn out to vote. Real democracy takes balls, rise above the shackles of islam.

9 I'm glad the US stayed the course this far, if it was up to the waffling democrats, the US would have withdrawn with their tails between their legs after the first IED. Its high time the Iraqis decided to turn on the insurgents and give them a proper shafting, they have been murdering iraqis for so long, i'm surprised they let them go for this long. It must have been all the support from across the borders and from the left wing peace movements that emboldened the insurgents.

10 So now, not only are the dhimmicraps losing in America, they're losing in Iraq too! Of course they've already lost Afghanistan, so they try to pretend it doesn't exist.

12 By the way, did anyone else see on the news where people in Australia are kicking ass and taking names of muslims after some attacked a lifeguard? I can't find a good link to it yet, but then I'm editing images and don't have a lot of time. I say good on 'em!

Posted by: Improbulus Maximus at December 11, 2005 07:22 PM (0yYS2)

13 I predicted this would happen in Australia after Bali. It will happen in other countries too if we keep experiencing terror from the muslims. The media are dismissing it as the work of right-wing drunken louts.

16 "...the US would have withdrawn with their tails between their legs after the first IED." What? Like the UN? Does this mean that it's that much less likely the Iraqis will descend into civil war? Dang. And it was quickly becoming the liberals "last great hope". What a shame for them.

17 Yeah, Oyster, and you know what, when their last, best hope is a civil war, it shows the total and complete bankrupcy of the Democratic Party.

18 I'm afraid, given the landslide of good news of late, that the heretofore seemingly inevitable "progressive revolution" that I have been hearing about for so long simply may not happen, and the "progressive movement" may end with a whimper instead of a bang. Of course, I can't claim to be surprised, because the leftards are all talk and no action anyway, unless it's the odd bit of vandalism or hacking; they generally don't have the balls to take real action, unless they can do it in mass mobs while wearing ski masks. Cowards. It would be a shame really, for all the leftard assholes who have been committing treason for so long to get out of it alive. I really want them to start a war, because then we can thin the herd. I really, really want to thin the herd.
