Comedian trying to reconcile Muslim beliefs with irreverent show.Ok, as an avid Dave Chappelle fan, I've got to say that this one totally is throwing me for a loop. The star of the drug comedy Half Baked and the man who single-handedly made the word bitch acceptable in every day usage doesn't drink alcohol and won't eat pork?
Something is not right in this story.
Aha! It is all making sense now. Check out this part of the story:

To be fair, many American stars continued doing what they were famous for after converting to Islam... take Muhammad Ali as an example. (1) Didn't Wacko Jacko claim to convert to Islam sometime last year in yet another pathetic attempt to draw publicity?
(2) Not only did Muslims formerly enslave blacks, they still do so with great enthusiasm in Sudan. Of course, it's black Muslims enslaving non-Muslim blacks, so it's okay, as long as no white people are involved, so it's not newsworthy or anything.

Personally, I feel this is a much bigger issue than Islam...you simply have to dismiss the ignorance of those individuals who started this raid. But their stupidity (literally) has generated POSITIVE discussions; something that is lacking these days.
The DISAPPOINTMENT is that you no longer see or have a positive icon in black culture who's not afraid to challenge the subtle racism and RACIAL DISPARITY in today's society (i.e. all ghettos, prisons, even lower tier schools are dominated by blacks/hispanics; and congress, private schools, elite universities, businesses, ALL dominated by whites [as a % of their race for those of you wanting to play the "greater-numbers" game]). AND CHAPPELLE WAS WILLING TO MAKE IT PUBLIC while reaching a large audience, but reminded us that we all - blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, indians, etc. - could be cool b/c we all like to do the same thing...smoke (j/k), and we all have strengths and weaknesses as a race.
I'm definitely proud of Chappelle, and hopefully it's just time for him to move on to BIGGER AND BETTER things like the movie he has coming out (which I have to go see). But he was definitely an Islamic icon in the black community to stir up discussion AND ACTION, which is needed. I'm not a Muslim, but I would think it's important to not simply Praise Islamic ideals, but help bring about these positive characteristics of Islam in those who need it MOST (i.e. the young ignorant boys who started this)...Two great men Malcom X and M.L. King tried to do that...GO READ THEIR AUTOBIOGRAPHY, and take action!!!

cool discussion. just wanted to inform the nonmuslim here that the Qur'an actually is a book that highly advocates the freeing of slaves. God commands us many times to free slaves for it is one of the greatest things one can do. the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his companions would buy slaves from other ppl and free them (whether they were muslim or not).
about chapelle, me as a Muslim see it as a great thing that he has found peace in Islam and I wish him luck for his quest to improve himself. Whoever doesn't agree just think about what walking away from $50 million dollars and fame means. his whole extended family was pressuring him, wanting this house and those cars, and he left that pressure and walked away from $50 MILLION. how many of us Muslims today would do that. That is how strong the message of Islam is. it preaches letting go of earthly things and doing good deeds for the hereafter.
and also about the fact that he left comedy...it isn't cuz comedy is a sin under islam (as some1 commented), it's actually that the comedy he's doing is a sin. i mean he curses all the time, something islam preaches not to do. he makes skits where he drinks or does drugs, or is with a woman whose tit pops out of here blouse. that stuff woud be something not compatible with islam. just wanted to give in my two cents.

I wonder if you were so shallow as to think that Chappelle has made no commentary whatsoever concerning Islam in all the shows and standup he's ALREADY released and performed. For example, in his "Killing 'em softly..." he cracks a joke about a Chinese guy pretending to be Arab so that Muslims will be blamed for yet another plane hijacking. And that's only one example...
Another thing... The brilliance behind Chappelle's comedy has nothing to do with his sexual jokes or foul language (which is the only thing you picked up on in your lame and misguided attempt at making Chappelle-an jokes)-- it has everything to do with his subtle communication of his strong political and racial views. To top it all off, your "jokes" are pretty much a repeat of stereotypes concerning Muslims. There's nothing original to them, nor anything funny about them. They are serious attacks against Muslims that would hold up as "hate speech" in any civilized court.
You need to learn about what Islam really is before you try to speak of it and its followers. And you need to learn from Chappelle-- be he Muslim or not... Thank God I read more of the comments that followed the first ones, for I started to feel this website is sponsored by the KKK. Speaking of the KKK, they persecuted blacks and Jews based on religion (which of course was a false belief that the bible mentions Jews and blacks as inferior creatures), so would it be valid for me, as a Muslim, to point at Christians and say "Jew/black haters?" Also, Hitler and his army that burned the Jews during the Holocaust were all Christian. Does this allow me to say that Christians are Jew-haters? So before pointing the finger at Muslims and calling us all "bin ladens," maybe you should get to know Muslims a little better. Stop watching TV and meet one in real life.

hey everyone..i happend to find this site by accident..n im very disappointed..i have to ask what do youll have agaisnt Islam? i was delighted to hear that dave chapelle has converted to Islam..thats because I myself am a Muslim..but what gets me irritated is that theres so many bad rumors spreadin around the whole world about Islam..if a person is ignorant and doesnt actully kno much about Islam then he/she shouldnt be commenting on Islam. Mostly what people hear about Islam is from the news..which usually is all bullshit..if u actually try just once to research on Islam, youll be amazed..i hope someday u guys will understand..but if not then shut ur mouth up n stop bad mouthing Islam..

HAHA - I have never read so many ignorant comments in one place until now...The person who said he doesn't get African-Americans converting to Islam because Arabs enslaved them? Wow, America really doesn't offer history lessons to its citizens. The European and the crackers (White people of the U.S.) enslaved Africans and brought them over for economic purposes - Islam abolished slavery...
That Dave Chapelle is turning toward religion is a positive thing. Maybe not for mofo's who worship false democracy and money, but for those who believe will see any type of a step toward God a positive one...

I think its wonderful that this kind of interaction is occuring. HAZRAT BILAL was one of the prominent and first converts to iSLAM, and guess what, He was a black slave at the time, who after converting to ISLAM was seen and given the same SOCIAL status as an Arab or any other MUSLIMS.
