I Smell A Rat

Apparently not being pulled over isn't incentive enough.

I mean, if they really were out to just recognize good driving habits, why not get the info from the license plate and mail the prize to them?

I'm a pro-law enforcement guy, but pulling over law abiding citizens obeying the rules is 90 different types of wrong.

What's next, giving you concert tickets after they search your house and make sure your guns are properly unloaded and locked up, or a trip to Orlando because they didn't find a meth lab? A case of condoms when they don't find any evidence you're running a whorehouse?

Sorry, this is more a fishing expedition than a reward-the-citizens type of deal. I'm sure a great deal of us have been pulled over at one time or another. It's not a happy occasion, even for something as minor as a burnt out headlight.

Meanwhile, as the police are patting you on the back, assuming you're not slumped over the wheel with a heart attack, Abdul goes cruising by in an eighteen wheeler packed with the wrath of Allah.

1 A lot of different cities are doing this sort of thing. I recall seeing it in Cedar Rapids, Ia., for instance, a couple of years ago.

2 "Meanwhile, as the police are patting you on the back, assuming you're not slumped over the wheel with a heart attack, Abdul goes cruising by in an eighteen wheeler packed with the wrath of Allah." You owe me a new keyboard! Absolutely agree, there is no good reason to stop law abiding citizens -- it's an abuse of Police Authority.

3 I would get a laugh. Its weird, maybe stupid, but their intent would be known immediately and give me a pleasant rush... I wouldn't be interested in the games tho. I think you need to lighten up on this Vinnie.

4 I would be instantly suspicious. And none too happy for the scare. I got pulled over once years ago. Hadn't done a thing. Was even using my cruise control to make sure I wasn't speeding. A single woman in a car coming home after work. Know what the cop told me after running my license and keeping me sitting there for 20 minutes? "You looked suspicious." That was it.

5 This is just a new, clever disguise for the ugly face of fascim which has been leering at us for quite a while now. Make no mistake people; the government is not on our side, the police are not on our side, and the courts are not on our side, because all three have a vested interest in expanding and consolidating power for the benefit of those who weild the power. Out government and its various facets are no less an enemy to We the People than al Qaeda.

6 Correction: ...our government...

7 How much do you want to bet that a disproportionate number of these incentives are doled out to cute girls the officers want to strike up conversations with? It's ridiculous. Giving us prizes when we obey the law is not the job of law enforcement and, sorry, but only idiots believe it will have any effect on safety or crime.

8 Speaking of the "cute girl" analogy - I relayed a story of the same abuse of priviledge (although this instance was somewhat benign) of police in my own blog this morning. This post just reminded me of it.

9 Yep.

10 This is the stupidest promotion I have ever heard of. Is there absolutely no traffic in Travis? It will take at least 15 minutes to pull the driver over and give the "reward" which is in fact a co-promotion and not a "reward" at all. Can you imagine showing up late to work because you were driving courteously? The ad exec. who dreamed this up must be laughing - or maybe he's the subversive type, from New York perhaps, and he dislikes Texans, and the police, and wants to cause a little trouble...
