Good Friday

Saw a news story this week where they interviewed children and asked them the meaning of Good Friday and Easter. The kid's didn't do very well. I'm not sure why, embarrasment, ignorance or both I suppose. Not the kids fault is it?

Bible Gateway book of John : 23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

28After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

31The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

33But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

36For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

37And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

Bible gateway has added new translations including Arabic. Hint, hint.

1 Howie, I'm not too bothered by kids not knowing the deeper meaning of religious holidays. Let them experience the joy and fun of the holidays as children first, then when they older they can experience and delve into the deeper meanings of these holy days.

2 Agreed, some of them were rather young. I thought a couple of the older ones would have got it. But I felt I would observe it with a post. See Dubya got me all reflective this AM.

3 >>>But I felt I would observe it with a post. I agree. It's the least you could do. I wonder how many Liberal blogs will tip their hats to this christian holiday. My guess is zero. It's just an observation.

4 Psalms: 104 24 In wisdom Thou hast made them all .... ...And leviathan which Thou hast formed to sport in it.

5 I'm going to watch Life of Brian, but that's about as close to church as I'll get.

6 It’s not just the kids who have no clue. Good Friday is a day of fasting in our family. We attend the foot washing Mass on Thursday evening then fast until Saturday am. This is our small way to share in and show our appreciation for the sacrifice the Lord made for us. The day is a solemn one. I go into one of the back offices at work, stay caught up, but do some reflection and reading most of the day. Anyway, I go in to work on Friday and there is an email from a rep that markets her products to our company. I open the email and it is a bright yellow, blue with pink background message with Easter eggs and bunny pictures on it. The heading of the flyer is “Happy Good Friday”

7 Brad, I don't think it is about being clueless. Rather it is about succumbing to " political correctness " in denying Christ. Similar to supplanting " Harvest Day " for Halloween which is the flip side of this coin. Similar to disallowing the American flag at public schools so it doesn't stir up unrest. Similar to " family " being a no-no word because it offends single people. In the case of your client who artfully side-stepped the Easter issue, an opportunity has presented itself for you to be a witness and let her know of your love for Christ. Yep, the Devil is alive and well and working in these people, but there will be an end to it when God finally slays leviathan in the final 4 days of creation!

8 "an opportunity has presented itself for you to be a witness and let her know of your love for Christ" Something tells me did didn't make use of that opportunity.

10 If christ was crucified on good friday how can they call it good friday?

11 Good for us, not so good for Jesus ... except He rose on the 3rd day to fulfill God's plan of salvation for whosoever believeth! And He get's to sit at the right hand of God throughout eternity. Must be nice, ... I guess. Better than a sharp stick in the eye!
