Germans Release Convicted 9/11 Terrorist

Mounir el MotassadeqIn a move that likely supports the contention that Europeans do not take terrorism seriously, a convicted 9/11 terrorist has been released from custody while his case is being appealed.

From Aljazeera.net:

Mounir el Motassadeq was sentenced to seven years in prison last August by a court in Hamburg.

City judicial spokesman Carsten Grote on Tuesday said Germany's Federal Constitutional Court has now ordered him released. Grote did not give a reason for the higher court's decision.

It was not clear when el Motassadeq, 31, would be released.

In 2003, the Moroccan became the first person anywhere to be convicted with the 9/11 hijackings when he was found guilty of membership of a terrorist organisation.

No reason was given for the court's decision to apparently not consider him a flight risk. I'm astonished! If ever there was a candidate for being a flight risk, it seems a convicted terrorist should qualify. The German court obviously disagreed.

3 Germany arrested several in Homburg associated directly with one stage or another of 9/11 several years ago. They refused to extradite under the pre-tense that they may be subject to the death penalty under our laws. They decided they could better deal with justice issues than we - in a case involving 3000 dead Americans in NYC, DC, and PA - and had the right. Its my understanding they made it difficult for US agencies to interrogate and investigate the suspects in Germany. You can all ask yourselves why. Why no big public complaints from Bush Admin - pure politics and diplomatic need. We needed the Euro assistance for the war on Terror - and the Euro's early on began looking for reasons to cop out. And all you guys are looking (almost begging) for reasons to show support for these Euros - all because of a few cartoons in a few newspapers. Germany is looking for a way to make these guys go away - n' probably talking with other Euros for transit assistance. And some of you wonder why I have been saying what I have reference all this cartoon crap.

5 Agree with everything you said, hondo, but would still like to support those who regained their senses in Europe, and they are not nessasarily in charge. But my overall attitude is wait and see.

7 "Okay, now someone kill him." I suspect that we will be getting to that part of the playbook soon. I have had the same thoughts. So I bet there are others with the same thoughts and the means to do so.

8 This is becoming a habit for the Germans. And, Carlos, we are in support of the free press in Europe, not the governments who release these dangerous people.

9 I'll bet that Dave has hit the nail on the head. I hope that Filthy is right. Not that I think the US should engage in assassination or anything like that (rolls eyes), but if the SOB just happened to step in front of a speeding bus, fall into a brush chipper, or ram his car into a Hellfire missile, I wouldn't shed any tears.
