Ethnic Cleansing Comes to Iraq

Okay, so it's not ethnic cleansing, it's sectarian cleansing, but it's still bad. This may not be civil war yet, but it isn't a good sign either. We have to be willing to admit the bad with the good. Too often we only hear the bad in Iraq, but that doesn't mean we can ignore it or that it doesn't exist.

Via Bill Dautierieve, this AP story. I'm not sure just how widespread the problem is, but I am told that it is fairly common--especially in Baghdad--with some neighborhoods becoming essentiall "shia" or "sunni" free.

Read the whole thing, but check out this line by a guy named Radha who was kicked out of his home:

"I'm not some Jew to be treated this way by Arabs. I'm just a Shiite,"
Ironic.

1 Rusty Its a big thing up north with the Kurds and Turkmen against the Sunni Arab transpants sent up there by Saddam with his Arabization plan. Figure Saddam had similar programs going in other parts of the country we don't hear about. Shit happens. Seem to recall about a third of the US population being nudged to move on after the revolution - no clue how many relocated during and after the Civil War. Life can be a bitch.

2 Your're right, it is a bitch. It certainly happened after WWII with massive exchanges of populations and ethnic cleansing between the victorious powers and the Germans. Quite common, but sad nonetheless.

3 "...Sunni and Arab transpants..."? Pants across Sunnis and Arabs... what? Okay, just kidding and being the magnificent bastard that I am with a cheap buzz on. Seriously though, There were a lot of people who went west after the revolution because their neighbors were on the winning side and they weren't. Some began their journey wearing an honorific regalia consisting primarily of tar and feathers, and borne upon their route on a triumphal chariot constructed of a single fence rail, and were seen on their way by a turnout of all the townfolk, who bestowed upon them such honors as a showering of eggs, tomatoes, and horse manure. As uncivil as this treatment sounds, at least they weren't murdering each other in church. Western civilization is better than islam, hands down.

4 West? I pretty sure most of them went North (eh), and a few back to the land of milk, honey and God Save The King. Bulk of the loyalists were urban - can't see them going native and livin' off the land. The tar & feather parade was real - I believe that's were it originated.
