Egypt: el-Nashar an Innocent Lamb Wrongfully Accused

Magdy el-Nashar, the Leeds scholar who was arrested in Egypt following the London terror bombings, has been absolved of any wrongdoing by the Egyptian government. From The Guardian:

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Egypt said Tuesday that a detained chemist wanted by Britain for questioning about the London bombings had no links to the July 7 attacks or to al-Qaida.

Government spokesman Magdy Rady said in a statement that a Cabinet meeting Tuesday reviewed an Interior Ministry report that "made clear that there is no link between Egyptian chemist Magdy el-Nashar with al-Qaida or the (London) bombings."

So there.

Of course Egyptian officials offered no explanation for this inconvenient report from CNN:

(CNN) -- The explosive TATP was found in connection with the investigation of the London bombings, three knowledgeable sources have told CNN.

One of the sources said that investigators found the TATP in the Leeds apartment rented by Magdy el-Nashar, an Egyptian biochemist detained for questioning Thursday in connection with the London attacks.

I'm sure there's a logical explanation for these seemingly contradictory reports. After all, it's not as if the Egyptians have a history of lying about terrorist incidents or anything.

2 This is a fine example of what happens when everybody dances together. CNN and The Guardian pretty much waltz together, but they screwed up on this story. Good post.

3 "All 5 of these guys were framed." Why do you think this, Greg?

4 Off topic, but I finally found the report I mentio0ned a few days ago. Here is the report I heard on the evening of 9-11. My first impression was that Flight 93 was shot down, a prudent action under the circumstances. This report was never repeated. It went into the 'memory hole'. Why has this been covered up? Why shoot down the one plane in which the passengers were taking control? Were they about to discover the secret of 9-11? Google 'Globalhawk'. "We got the call about 9:58 this morning from a male passenger stating that he was locked in the bathroom of United Flight 93 traveling from Newark to San Francisco, and they were being hijacked," said Glenn Cramer, a 911 supervisor. "We confirmed that with him several times and we asked him to repeat what he said. He was very distraught. He said he believed the plane was going down. He did Hear Some Sort Of An Explosion and Saw White Smoke Coming From The Plane, but he didn't know where. "And then we lost contact with him." http://www.post-gazette.com/headlines/20010912crashnat2p2.asp

5 The Washington Post reported that leaders of Congress -- including Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, R-Texas and House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, D-Mo. -- were told at a briefing by the Capitol Police that the hijacked plane might have been bound for the Capitol or Camp David, the presidential retreat in Thurmont, Md., 85 miles southeast of the crash site, according to participants in the meeting. The participants discussed a possible shoot down of the aircraft, said Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind. "The question I heard asked was: 'Who has the authority to order a commercial jetliner shot down by the military?' " Pence said. However, the congressional leaders soon learned that the plane had already crashed.

6 YBP:"All 5 of these guys were framed." 'Why do you think this, Greg?' YBP, I discussed that in the Caption Contest. I thought about you today. I hopped the Eurostar from Rome to Florence. (Man this tourist business is hard work. It's so hot, I drink 5 liters of water a day and piss like a Russian race horse). But that's not why I thought of you Inter alia, I saw Donnatello's, Mary Magdalene (sp?) at il Duomo dell Santa Maria di Fiore Museum. Unlike all the other statues, it's carved from wood. The gnarls in the wood provided him with the perfect medium to depict her as a twisted wretched whore. Have you read, 'The Da Vinci Code', by any chance. What do you think of Brown's claim that Mary Magdalene was Jesus' wife and that there are living descendents of Christ? Was Donnatello's work part of a smear campaign by the Church to stifle that theory? I don't necessarily agree with the theory, but Rabbi's were expected to marry. It is thought provoking. I know the Church thinks the book is heresy. What say you? It's nearly 1 AM here. Got to go.

7 Was the Egypt Air transcript ever released? If not, why not? You (Bluto, NOT GREG) piqued my interest.

8 Good-grief, what's with all the blithering static? Framed or fooled and murdered by some terrorist with speed-dial, like the car-bomb drivers in iraq who's slight and sticky remains have been found handcuffed to the steering wheel, or the guy so dop[ed-up on narcotics he forgot to pull the pud-plunger, or whereever they hide the trigger.

9 No no no, it was five Jooooooooz who swooped down in their Black Helicopters™ and caused greg to have a small penis, low IQ, and subsequent inferiority complex due to gettin' no love from the ladies... uh I mean they blew up the buses. Yeah, that's what I meant to say.

10 Greg: Without getting into the sordid lies in the book, I'm familiar with its content but consider it blasphemous lies. Rabbi's were expected to marry, but certainly Jesus did not fit the mold of a typical rabbi. I loved Florence. Are you visiting Venice? If so, make sure you visit Harry's Bar in Venice (a Hemingway haunt), but don't wear shorts.

11 YBP, As a good fellow Catholic boy, I value your opinion. It's good fiction though. I forgot to mention that I read the book at my last confession. I'll mention it next time. I expect to get about 23, 'Our Fathers' and 32, 'Hail Marys' I may go to Venice tomorrow. YPB:'but don't wear shorts.'- Is it a gay bar? I know, lot's of Holy places don't allow shorts above the knees or women to have exposed shoulders. But a bar? A Hemingway haunt? YBP:"All 5 of these guys were framed." 'Why do you think this, Greg?' Please read my 2 new posts regarding this subject on the "Halleluja" string.

12 Wanderin' Greg: Europe, for how "progressive" it is (not always a good thing), is still old-fashioned in many ways. I guess there " No Shorts" rule is an attempt to maintain some sort of dress code. Of course they wouldn't have dared throw "Papa" out! I'm not sure I would use the words "good fiction," though. It's misleading. Something that may be technically well-written is not enough for me to want to taint my mind with it. I think that in many ways, the ideas behind something are more potent than word choice. Only 23 "Our Fathers" and 32 "Hail Marys"!!! That's lettin' you off easy, my friend! The pillory! The rack! Or both! At the same time! (In these liberal times, let's hope its not required reading at the seminaries.) Will read those posts. Stay well, and don't eat any coconut from street venders. YBP

13 He was just released, thank (insert your god here). His life is most probably ruined over this. Do a web search for Aafia Siddiqui, she wasn't so lucky.

14 I BELIEVE THAT IN THESE TOUGH TIMES AMERICA NEEDS TO LEGALIZE GIRLS GONE WILD VIDEOS TO MINORS. JUST KIDDINNN! now ON a more serious note what is happening today all over the world. people (NATIONS) are getting to scared of brittian and america. unless they have specific rights that stand out. like in this case there isn't an extraditoin treaty between egypt and great brittian. under this assumption was mad on to a giochemist who "fled" britan just a week BEFORE the bombings took place. and so the supposed "MASTERMIND" was arrested in egypt. now what does he do. HE COULD GO BACK TO LONDON AND GET ARRESTED AND QUESTIONED, OR STAY IN A PLACE THAT WILL NOT GIVE A PROPER JOB AS A BIOCHEMIST WITH A PHD. AND THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY. just kiddinnn. NOW HIS REPUTATION HAS BEEN DROUCHED WITH SUCH HARSH ACCUSATIONS. I personally think that he would have liked to be made famous over spectacular research that will help mankind. insted he becomes famous over being called the "MASTERMIND" of a killing spree. NOT A VERY GOOD THING TO BE CALLED AFTER JUST RECIEVING A PHD. now I AM FINISHED RAMBLING ON IN THIS SUBJECT MATTER. AND SO GOOD NIGHT FELLOW BLOGGERS.
