'Condoleezza Holds a Watermelon'

Some people believe that political statements probably don't belong in a mathematics course. I agree.

From SeattleTimes.com:

(Bellevue, Washington) Bellevue Community College Board of Trustees issued a statement Saturday condemning the behavior of an instructor who wrote a racially insulting math question recently brought to the college's attention by students.
The math question is considered contrary to the college's core values of respect for diversity and elimination of stereotypes.
The question began, "Condoleezza holds a watermelon just over the edge of the roof of the 300-foot Federal Building, and tosses it up with a velocity of 20 feet per second." It went on to ask when the watermelon would hit the ground, based on a formula provided.
BCC President Jean Floten wouldn't name the instructor who wrote the question, however, she said there was no intention to connote the negative caricatures of blacks eating watermelon. Instead, according to Floten, the instructor was fascinated with the name "Condoleezza." Yeah, right. Notably, before being rewritten the question logically referenced the entertainer Gallagher who at least uses watermelons in his comedy act.

As corrective action, the math department issued an apology and the college announced the creation of a new vice-president for diversity and blah, blah, blah. No mention was made regarding the oozing liberalism of an infected institution of high learning.

1 I wonder what the odds are this this will ever be picked up by the MSM? Liberals are scum and should all be hanged.

2 And once again the racism of liberals exposes itself. Liberalism is a virus. Who would have thought it would pass to the mathematics departments of the world?

3 At least they use watermelons and not rifles and ropes ...

4 Hmm...this is interesting. Condoleeza had a rifle and scope, she stood at the top of a 300 ft. building, and threw it out six feet and it fell at x ft/sec. What is your point, Last Larry? At least a rifle and scope wouldn't have had a racist connotation. Granted, it would be stupid to throw a perfectly good rifle and scope away, but I wouldn't waste a watermelon, either.

5 Sounds like were comparing apples and oranges here. Mayabe we could compare the Mohammed depictions to the outrage it causes the Muslims. People getting upset over a watermelon tossed from a building and getting out the rifles and ropes is every bit as laughable and ridiculous.

6 Yeah, and that gapped-toothed bitch wins the seed spitting contest every fucking year.

7 Because Liberals are allowed to be racists.

8 Wait a second: it is not fair to say all instructors at BCC are hateful in this way. I ought to know. I went there for three quarters. I will admit that they have their moonbats. What college nowadays would be complete without them? But they are heavily outweighed by the excellent, intelligent, fair instructors present. I had a geography teacher with a PhD tell us that Global Warming is just another theory-and went to pains to point out that it is far from a proven one. I had a polysci Prof who was from Pakistan and hated conservatism-but would let us debate the issues instead of preaching his liberalism without dissent. I respect the man very much. I had a History prof who was extremely knowledgeable and was also unafraid to challenge PC Herstory. If you want to find unhiged whackos, then I suggest that you look to Shoreline Community College, Seattle Central Community College (where they kicked off the recruiter in January of 2005 in a riot), or Evergree (famous for producing Racheal Corrie and many, many more like her through their "peer review" grading system). BCC is a good school. And HARD too. There is a high degree of academic pressure there. Just my two cents.

9 Last word Larry: I agree, lets compare it to the outrage the Mohammed cartoons aroused in the Islamists. Let me ask you this, how many people do you see rioting over this? Any embassies/consulates firebombed over this? How about restaurants destroyed? Anyone killed in the mayhem? Hrm, I didn't think so either. Thanks for coming out though!

10 Ha! Ha! You are professor material Greg! Good one!

11 Condoleezzaa ... I'm fascinated more by the T & A than I am the name ....

Posted by: Last word Larry at April 18, 2006 12:07 AM (FCC6c)

12 If the question had read "Cynthis McKinney holds a watermelon," I think the media would have been outraged. There would have been riots on the campus.

13 I refer you all back to the second sentence of the first post.

14 After all it is a Math class ...

15 What the hell? I didnÂ’t realize the USA had become a totalitarian government in which itÂ’s now illegal to use the names of your political figures or poke fun at themÂ… What the hell is wrong with you all.

16 So Justin, are you retarded, or just stupid? This is no different than liberals calling Michelle Malkin a "slanty-eyed whore", but it's okay since it's liberals doing it. Liberals are scum and should be banished to a desert island without food or water, and left to rot.
