Bomb Blasts in New Delhi, Scores Killed

(New Delhi, India) Three powerful bombs were detonated today in crowded shopping areas (map) of the capital city. The first blast occurred about 5:40pm IST at the main market in Paharganj, a popular meeting area for foreign tourists and backpackers. Another explosion followed in Sarojini Nagar, a busy shopping area popular among the middle class and foreigners. Soon after, the teeming market of Govindpuri was attacked. Police, fire brigades, bomb disposal teams, and anti-terror squads rushed to the scene as the whole city was placed on security alert.

Thus far, reports on the number of casualties have been sketchy. The dead and injured are expected to be numerous. Most places were unusually crowded due to the upcoming Diwali festival, a major Hindu holiday during which families exchange gifts, light candles and celebrate with fireworks.

It's unclear who is responsible for the blasts, but Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal stated that the attacks were "handiwork of those who were backed by anti-India elements."

"From preliminary observations, it can be said the explosives were kept in a cycle rickshaw or a motorcycle. At least 40 are injured and six to eight people have expired," Delhi Police Commissioner KK Paul told reporters in Paharganj.
According to Home Secretary V.K. Duggal, an alert was sounded in all states for possible terrorist attacks during the Diwali season.

The Guardian reports that a bus was bombed in addition to the shopping areas.

Rediff India reports that 50 people are dead and 70 are injured. Also, the blasts are suspected to be the handiwork of banned Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba outfit.

HindustanTimes.com reports that:

- 48 are confirmed dead,
- Police raid hotels in Paharganj,
- Home Ministry says RDX was used in blasts,
- Two suspects arrested at New Delhi Railway Station,
- Blasts being blamed on an intelligence failure.
A top advisor to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stated that the bombings were surely the work of terrorists but which group is unknown at present. Opposition from numerous terrorist groups constantly faces India. From fringe organizations to militarized Kashmiri rebels, India has its enemies.

4 More lives destroyed and ruined because of the arrogance and faked morality of a culture / religion. Savages. May the Indian government deal some Israeli style justice to these bastards. Three girls on the way to school - that's bravery for you. Holy warriors indeed. I guess this badge will go nicely next to their puppy kicking badge.

7 The "Religion of Peace" seems to be dominating all the threads tonight. Surely a peaceful religion would condemn these dastardly attacks! I can almost hear the imans now. Let's see, what is that noise? /crickets chirping

8 The crickets have been working overtime here lately.

9 Yes, Maximus, they have, but the lefty/liberals are so happy about the Libby indictment and are hardly concerned about children being murdered in the most horrible of ways. They are only concerned if the brown skinned happen to be Muslim.

Posted by: jesusland joe at October 29, 2005 09:29 PM (rUyw4)

10 Yeah, deaths only mean something if they can be used against America in some way. Liberals care about the deaths of paleo-stinian terrorists but not the Jews they murder. They care about American soldiers for their propaganda value, but they really care about the terroists in US custody, who may be made uncomfortable while on sabbatical from murdering innocent people. Liberals are all scum and should all be killed. See? It sounds a little less crazy every day, doesn't it?

11 I just got through reading an article a few weeks ago praising how India is so much more superior to others in that their Arab Muslim immigrants had assimilated so well into the Indian culture and everyone lived in peace there. I sure wish I could find it now.

12 Yeah Oyster, I've heard that line before too, but the truth is that since independence and partition there have been frequent incidents of violence between muslims and Hindus in India, often with dozens or hundreds dead, and usually over something stupid like a goat or something like that.

Posted by: Improbulus Maximus at October 30, 2005 03:13 PM (0yYS2)

13 I am so disgusted by the actions of the ROP this weekend, especially the beheading of the little girls, that I cannot stand to even look at a Muslim. When will the moderate Muslims, if they exist, speak out against this evil. The civilized governments of the World need to take action quickly, or it's about time for their citizens to. After this weekend, I'm ready myself.

Posted by: jesusland joe at October 30, 2005 06:20 PM (rUyw4)

14 Jesusland joe They can't for two reasons - even moderate muslims are irrationally protective of their "dirty laundry" while at the same time doing little to nothing in washing it. Some kind of stupid hangup. The other reason is one we rarely here about. Terror as a tactic sometimes works - and terror and violence is widespread throughout the muslim world against other muslims. Speak up or speak out in some countries and the fanatics will kill you and your family with little fear from their governments.
