It's very sad. My understanding is that the woman is a liberal and was in Iraq reporting from basically an anti-American perspective.
What we're seeing, sadly, is the reality of a liberal getting her wake-up call to the reality of the world. The world is not a place of sweetness and light where all cultures are equal and everything is relative and "context" is all-important. These Muslims couldn't care less about context and relativity and equality. They just want to saw off the heads of people who don't submit to them. Do some research about an Eyptian hostage who escaped after his hostage video was filmed. He claimed that a stringer who worked with Al Jazeera helped direct the hostage video prior to its filming.
It might just be one of the many rumors floating around Iraq, but on two other occasions Al Jazeera was accused of paying protesters to riot against Americans, and another time they interviewed militants trucked in to an IED bombing to rail against Americans while the Iraq who lived in the house two doors down claimed he had never seen them before.
The sad fact is, without the public distribution outlet Al Jazeera provides terrorists, many of these kidnappings would either not take place, or would be settled financially in a matter of days.

I think the story would be much fuller if it were explained why women are being held by the US. This might be able to either justify the captivity of the Iraqi women by the US or show that their captivity is unjustified. This would in no way justify the terrorists' tactics, but would explain their position.

Later Saturday, Enwiyah was found dead on the side of a road in Adel, the neighborhood where they were taken.

The problems in the mideast started way before the U.S. From the crusades, to the Abassids, to the Ottoman Turks, WW1 and the breaking of the region into spheres of influence, the U.S. action is of little consequence. The issues run way further than Al Qaida and Iraq...it's a distrust of occupation and colonialism, and this is identified with the West. Few countries in the region accept the existence of Israel, and they hate America for supporting it. (Thanks to Britain and France in their colonial actions).
