After My Appearance on al-Jazeera

The fallout from my appearance on al-Jazeera discussing the corrupt, anti-democratic, dysfunctional Yemeni regime that targets its own citizens: the Yemeni governmental newspapers are trashing my blog by name, and the Yemeni people are writing me by the hundreds with thanks. (Details here.)

Oh and I have a new troll.

1 Well done and good luck Jane. Just remember to watch your back. There will be those who will attempt to convince others that your actions are actually an indirect attack on Islam and not the Yemeni gov.

2 You go girl! Just go wearing an armored vest and carrying a concealed weapon. And in disguise.

3 Who's the troll? And be very careful with these people, Jane.

4 Hondo, they are trying every type of personal smear imaginable. JJ: the troll is concerned citizen. JJ & IM: the yemeni people are always telling me how brave I am and how they admire my courage. Its really a very brutal regime with no morals. So yes. thanks

5 no no, now he changed his name to The Turht. He says I'm fat and should go to Jenny Craig.

6 To quote Cartman: "Kick Ass!" Well done Jane. You've got the support of the people, so you're doing something right. The troll says you're fat? That's quite a comeback. Stay tuned for "you have cooties."

7 Graeme, thats really funny. The Prime Minister of Yemen invited me to Yemen on air, but I dont think I will go.

Posted by: Jane at November 19, 2005 10:22 AM (M7kiy)

8 Hey, Graeme, how's it going?

Posted by: jesusland joe at November 19, 2005 10:24 AM (rUyw4)

9 Jane, I'm no expert in politics, but I think you're making the right choice not going to Yemen. The Prime Minister is looking to get you on his home turf and will probably use it to his advantage. Hopefully with you shining a spotlight on the problems (some with global consequences)the diplomatic powers that be will step up to the plate to apply the needed pressure to deal with the situation. Hey, JJ. I'm doin' okay. Can't complain (much). Any deer on the business end of your SOCOM yet?

Posted by: Graeme at November 19, 2005 12:53 PM (51F9c)

10 Nope, but there was a deer on the business end of my Remington Model-600 Mohawk Thursday at 11:50am. Saving the Socom for something else.

11 Graeme, thats my hope. Just getting the truth out should have a positive impact somewhere down the line.

12 It'll be an up hill struggle though. Yemen's one of those countries where corruption is tolerated by the rest of the world just because it's not in the news very often. It's unfortunate that after what happened to the Cole, everyone just forgot about what's going on there. Cool JJ. So the deep freeze is filling up then.

13 Well, Graeme, that's what I'm doing between commenting and watching college football. Cutting up deer meat.

14 I didn't think you could get on Al-Jazeera unless you cut somone's head off.

15 I was surprised the host Hafez was very even handed, equally tough on everyone, and cut off the yemeni president's press sec when he started making personal attacks on me. The guy couldnt quit it, so the host pulled the plug. Also the Press Sec was disputing I am an expert, so then at the end of the show the host called me an expert on Yemen twice.

16 Maybe Al-Jazeera is trying to change its spots. Perhaps social change can come with the help of some of the media in the Middle East. I wish you the best, Jane. With all the flack you're getting, I believe you must be making them suffer. And by the hands of a woman! Oh, the pain! Hahahaha!

17 I too was suprised when you said that the Al Jazeera host was fair. Maybe it's just probability at work. In any large group of people there are those that won't be down with the status quo. Too bad there aren't more of those types in Al Jazeera, or should I say, more of those willing to make their position known. The fact that the government rep was making personal attacks shows that they have no defense for what's been going on. It speaks volumes to the viewers. On the bright side, with Al Jazeera's stamp of approval, other networks may not be far behind.

18 JJ, butchering a large animal is on my list of aversions to be overcome. I've read about how it's done, but I don't think I have the stomach for it. Surgeries on tv - that's fine. Cutting stuff up in front of me - problematic.

19 Graeme, I think you would find it not at all difficult. The bad part is the skinning and gutting, expecially if you took the kind of shot I did. It was quartering away from me and I had to shoot behind the rib cage on the right side and the bullet ended up lodging in the left shoulder. Let's just say the insides were kind of like scrambled eggs, if you get my drift. But this was a big 10-point buck and you almost never get an easy shot on one of them. That's why they are so big and have large racks, because they are very wary. I was hunting in Arkansas, and there are almost as many deer as people there. Over one million deer estimated to be there, so it's not at all difficult to get one, and you had better watch out or you will get one with your vehicle. My oldest son and I hit four deer with our vehicles in 2004. We hope to never break that record!

20 "Too bad there aren't more of those types in Al Jazeera, or should I say, more of those willing to make their position known." All the time that I watch al-jazeera, I can only come away with one conclusion: Boy do I not understand arabic.
