Remembering Fallen Heroes

My grandfather, a Marine killed in the Pacific theatre during WWII, is buried in the Punchbowl. He and his fallen brothers are joined by five heroes of the Afghanistan campaign. I am thankful for their sacrifice and proud of their service. God speed and rest in peace.

1 Their deaths mean something. The quote 'every man dies, not every man truly lives' comes to mind when I think of the fallen dead.

2 Better it is to dare mighty things, than to take rank with those poor, timid spirits who know neither victory nor defeat.

5 My Grandfather was shot in the neck in WWII, but survived. His brother, my Great Uncle Percy Stevens, died in the Battle of the Bulge. My g-g-g-g-great grandfather, Josiah Hatcher Baugh, was wounded in the thigh in the Battle of Cowpens in the Revolutionary War. He never had the bullet (musket ball?) removed and died in later years. Two other ancestors were instrumental in capturing two miscreants who ran amok killing people and robbing them immediately after the Civil War and hung them in Mississippi. We have many interesting ancestors.

6 War kills and is good for NOTHING

Posted by: Downing Street Memo at July 14, 2005 08:58 AM (ScqM8)

7 "War kills and is good for NOTHING" Well, it's good for KILLING.

Posted by: Young Bourbon Professional at July 14, 2005 09:16 AM (x+5JB)

8 Words kill as well. I have some Yin for your Yang DSM, If you continue to grind your blade,on the stone of hatred, the edge will be come a dull as your wit. War stopped Hitler, Saddam, Idi Amin, Musolini, Tojo, The Ottoman Turks, The Mongols, Huns, and even Moslems. The fear of losing war halted the spread of Communism, and Keeps China in check. It also ended the genocide in the Balkans. In fact, it is the threat of the horrors of war that enable people to consider peace before war.

9 DSM is a childish git who adds nothing. Isn't it way past time to ban his ass? This is the 2nd 'memorial' thread I have seen him pissing on today.

Posted by: Defense Guy at July 14, 2005 10:10 AM (jPCiN)

10 Rusty, I'm all for freedom of speech, as you know, but may I suggest a policy of banning people who shit in memorial threads like DSM and greg are doing.

Posted by: Carlos at July 14, 2005 10:17 AM (8e/V4)

11 No one is pissing on memorial threads. How dare you suggest so.

Posted by: greg at July 14, 2005 11:14 AM (Y6Yy8)

12 Carlos:"I'm all for freedom of speech, as you know, but may I suggest a policy of banning people who shit in memorial threads like DSM and greg are doing." How did I dishonor the dead? By quoting a grieving mother who lost her son? My hope is that we can reduce the number of war dead to zero. In so doing, I honor our soldiers and humanity. You disappoint me today Carlos. You've gone rabid on me. It must be the Texas sun. Have a drink. I'm stinking drunk on vodka. Let me fill your glass so we can drink to better times.

Posted by: greg at July 14, 2005 11:24 AM (Y6Yy8)

13 Perhaps it's none of my business because this isn't my blog, but I too have to wonder why one who blatantly demands reasoning and respect while they insult you and shit on your carpet doesn't get banned. Just an observation. No offense, but I honestly have enjoyed most of the time I've visited here and wish to thank you for your hospitality. Yet, I'm thinking of going elsewhere for "reasoned" discourse even if it's dissenting. This has really gotten out of hand and way too much time is wasted countering Greg's and DSM's constant badgering and inanities that escalate into disgusting insults about mothers and sisters. I get a little peeved at a couple other people here and wish they'd tone down their talk a bit, but at least they're simply giving an opinion, not spreading known lies, wild conspiracies and blatant disrespect for just about everyone.

14 Lostrova(?), Chin Chin, Salute, Down the Hatch, Here's Mud in Your Eye, One for the Road, I'm Even, Let's Get Odd, Roll Another One, etc.! "Can't we all get along", The Prophet, Rodney King. Gluteus, I'm going to kick your dainty ass, from here to Dallas. How do you find the pussy on the morbidly obese Gluteus Maximus? Roll him in flour and look for the wet spot.

Posted by: greg at July 14, 2005 11:42 AM (Y6Yy8)

15 When I was banned, Rusty posted on the subject of Muslims bleeding sheep by slitting their throats while they were still alive. Oyster replied, 'I think I'm getting sick'. Having run cattle for many years in Texas, I went to Oyster's blog and made an innocent post, declaring him to be a 'city slicker' and explaining that when cattle are butchered, they are knocked out with a pneumatic piston, raised up by their hind quarters aND their throats are slit so they can be blead while their hearts still beat. Any farm boy knows this, just ask Howie, he'll tell you. It's the same thing for pigs. Oyster freaked out, claiming I was 'polluting' his web site. He clearly over reacted. I think he's a Vegan. Pay him no mind. Oyster, if you don't like my posts, don't read them. Have a stiff drink and chill out.

16 "My hope is that we can reduce the number of war dead to zero." In times of war, this would be difficult indeed. I would say that your goal is to have this war called a mistake and cease to be (along with Bush). BTW, olive or onion in that martini?

Posted by: Young Bourbon Professional at July 14, 2005 12:26 PM (x+5JB)

17 greg, you don't show up at a funeral and start ranting to everybody how the guy died for nothing and how he was just a big dupe. You would be kicked out on your ass-- jst as you should on a thread to commerate the fallen dead.

Posted by: Carlos at July 14, 2005 12:35 PM (8e/V4)

18 Greg maybe boozing and blogging don't mix well. Greg can at times be reasoned with and has been banned before. Many of you fall for his bait and try to argue with him and then well it all goes to crap. For sure if he gets too ornery he will loose my support as well but as a long standing character here I've cut him some slack. I've stuck my neck out for him twice now and so has YBP. I think he has very little slack left. If greg chooses to get himself banned again his mission will suffer because he will have no place to express it. I don't disagree with you Carlos on this one just took me a few tries to see where y'all had went. Now angry there is no reasoning with him even if you are nice but he demonstrates his foolishness well enough on his own without the rest of us having to point that out. If you see comments that are "over the line" and deserve to be taken down email me or Rusty. Carlos the only thing that has been bothering me about you is the R rated spelled out profanity. Others take the time to put it in code. Greg has been and always will be greg. To argue with him is just not going to work. Also for angry I would hate to go through my whole life angry. Got to suck to be you. You will never change a single mind with that drivel you post. Entertain maybe but actually accomplish anything no. So far today some strong comments. Some stupid ones. Some may have been a bit off for the thread they were on. Pretty normal. greg is worrying the heck out of me I sense he lacks inhibition today. Please greg put down the booze or the keyboard one or the other. And yes butchering is gross that is why I avoid it at all costs if I can but greg has the process pretty much down. Don't foget to tie off the rectum before you gut the whole deal carefully. Yuck good eatin but hard work. You tend to appreciate a cow or pig more while eating if you knew it and cared for it killed it and butchered it. Ours are like big ass pets until freezer time. Greg has been warned I hope he gets it but it's up to him. We have all bent over backwards for him. If he chooses to disrespect our hospitality and continue I'm sure Rusty will pull out that banning sabre.

19 dude, if the blog moderators, or even fellow bloggers are bothered by profanity I have no problems whatsoever with that. I'm not emotionally attachment to my potty mouth. I'll spell it in code. Re commerative threads, it's my opinion that they should be politics-free zones, like funerals. If we Americans can't agree even on that then I truly weep for this country.

20 Carlos--Not quite sure which comments Howie was referring to. I don't think that you were the one who wanted to roll IM in flour, were you???

23 RUSTY YBP HOWIE OYSTER Please see my 2 previous posts. Given that IM threatens my life at least twice a day, maybe you can cut me some slack for wanting to "roll IM in flour". Let's be fair please.

Posted by: greg at July 14, 2005 04:21 PM (j6I6j)

24 Greg, How can you do this to me? I thought we were at least non combatants towards each other. But now I see you want to start polluting my home town. greg: "Gluteus, I'm going to kick your dainty ass, from here to Dallas." If you are going to kick his ass, have the decency to do it all the way up to Lubbock. It stinks up there already due to the slaughter pens.

25 Butch, I can see why you would be offended. As we say about pollution, "Don't Mess with Texas". Is Oklahoma OK (no pun intended)?

26 i just found this site a few days ago and wanted to see more of it until i posted. but i really can't think of much to add to any threads because, well, things seem to get slightly off topic. no, they usually don't even refer to the topic at all. but that's okay. i have to say that i kind of like how easy it is to push buttons just by a few sentences. i'm drawn to all the "greg drama." which is probably because my b/f's name also happens to be greg. so i tend to side with you (greg) at the end of your guys' arguments. so that's not really logical, but true all the same. and i see you may be in danger of getting the boot from this site, so i invite you and all your friends to come play at http://mostembarrassingmoment.com/forum/index.php. the site name may be misleading, or uninteresting for some, and i have to warn you that there are i think a large number of younger kids (10-??), but there is a forum on that website devoted to just "chit-chat." the chit-chat is usually more mature in content. But i think they need some more opinionated people on there to argue. so maybe i'll see you there...

27 just want to add that the site i listed has no educational value. news reports, found on this jawa site, are few and far between on the one i mentioned. i don't want to mislead anyone.

Posted by: terra at July 14, 2005 06:30 PM (llDmc)

28 "the site i listed has no educational value." Perfect for you Greg, exchanging ideas with lots of "younger kids (10-??)"!!! She wants you, Greg.

29 My above post was done in jest. Although I disagree with Greg on the WOT, Bush, etc., I wish him health and happiness. And a change of opinion on the WOT, Bush, etc.

31 YBP I see you are on

Posted by: Howie at July 14, 2005 07:10 PM (D3+20)

32 I've been lurking for some time and don't post very often but I will say this, Greg, I rarely agree with you on ANYTHING but at least you have something more substantive to add then BUSH LIED, PEOPLE DIED or some variation thereof. (IMHO), However, DSM reminds me of the BUSH LIES ass clown, show up, throw up a variation of the same tired thought and move on. Fact of the matter is, you don't like Bush, you probably don't like conservatives, hell for all I know you hate puppies and kittens, but we got your point the first thousand times you said it. What I'm saying is if you have a cogent point, please share it, you might change some minds or at least provoke a thoughtful discussion. Otherwise, it's just annoying and eventually turns into another barrage of back and forth insults. Though for sheer entertainment value, sometimes they're fun.

33 I'll tell you all a little secret about greg: greg almost always always responds in kind to how he is treated with little exception. Treat him well and you'll get the same.

Posted by: Hoiwie at July 14, 2005 09:08 PM (D3+20)

34 Howie: I think people should treat others as they want to. All the cards on the table. Honest, whether that means being rude or otherwise. If they step over the line, Rusty or you or another designee can step in, but I think all admonitions should be public, not private.

Posted by: Young Bourbon Professional at July 15, 2005 06:45 AM (x+5JB)

35 Greg, OK is ok. I went to Army boot camp there and never liked it since. And because it is hell, according to the song "Never been to Spain", I feel it would be good.

Posted by: Butch at July 15, 2005 07:43 AM (Gqhi9)

36 Greg's a lunatic and his politics aren't worth a dime, but he's gentle as a lamb if you don't flame him.
