My Electoral Vote Prediction: it's the weather, stupid!

Reaching into the depths of my vast well of political science factoids I pulled out this little semi-factoid: weather can change the outcome of a Presidential election. Who said it? I dunno, but it seems like something some political scientist must have theorized at some time and then found enough information about to get his findings published in the APSR (that's the American Political Science Review the flagship journal of the profession--mostly used for paperweight). Anyway it's sounds good and I'm too lazy to look it up!!

So, let's pretend for a moment that this very poli-sci-ish sounding theory is correct and try to game the Electoral College. Assume a couple of things. First, that a large voter turnout would mean a Kerry victory in close states. Second, assume that the poorer the weather the better it will be for Bush. This is based on a third assumption which is that Kerry voters are more likely than Bush supporters to have to hoof it, use public transportation, or drive cars which risk floating away in sudden rainstorms.

Ok, so using the above let's look at the states where the pundits have it too close to call. Too close to call is defined by Slate's 'iffy' states.

Florida=Sunny and 86 in Daytona, partly cloudy and 86 in Miami. The AARP goes out in droves, public transportation running smoothely, and convicted felons have no problem making it to the polls.

Jawa call Fla=Kerry.

Ohio=Rain all day in Cleveland, but a balmy 61--unseasonally warm. The same pretty much all over the state. Farmers and SUV loving Bushies will have no problem getting out the vote.

Jawa call Oh=Bush.

Wisconsin=Cloudy and in the mid to upper 40's in Milwaukee. Just chilly enough to suppress the Medicaid/welfare vote, but not so much that it stops the UW-Madison vote. That's a wash.

Jawa call WI=Kerry.

Minnessotta=Sunny and in the mid-40's in Minneapolis/St. Paul, low 40's in Duluth. Average temps all around.

Jawa call MN=Kerry.

Pennsylvania=Rain/heavy rains and in the mid-50's in Western and Northwestern Pennsylvania. Democratic stronghold of Philadelphia is partly cloudy with a high of 62. Fired lawyer-HIV-Springstein vote en masse on the liberal coast.

Jawa call PA=Kerry.

New Hampshire=Chance of rain increases throughout the day and a temperature in the mid-40's. But this is New Hampshire, which means that the richer you are the more likely you are to vote for John Kerry--because, naturally, how could you hold your head up high in your Boston office having voted for that dolt Bush?!? The quick-run-to-get-some-duty-free-Moulson's vote suppressed by old snow-tires and high price of gas.

Jawa call NH=Kerry.

Iowa=Partly cloudy and afternoon temps in the upper-40s. Practically summer in Iowa. Hawkeye kegger party weather-- togas, bonfire, and lots of College Republicans terrorizing the Women's Studies department.

Jawa call Iowa=Bush.

New Mexico=Albuquerque is unseasonally cold with temps in the mid-40's and some snow in the hours before the polls open. The Taos liberals are all still comfortably in the Bahamas--not enough snow to make the migration to the slopes yet--so no advantage there. But the Santa Fe art crowd will wake up to temps in the upper 20s and icy roads. The weather will be just cold enough to suppress the recently trimmed pony-tail laden.

Jawa call NM=Bush.

And as the song goes, and the rest........

evotepredict2.jpg

The moral of the story is this: pray for bad weather!!!

Can't one of you, like, do a dance or something and rummage up a storm? How about another hurricane in Florida? Some nice hailstorms in Wisconsin?

*I actually think Bush will win, but hey, this was much funner than grading some stupid midterms!!!

*Double PS-As another good poli-scientist, Dr. Choas, noted to me, under this scenario Bush would only need to pull WI or MN to get the tie. Tie goes to the House. The House is Republican. Bush wins.

1 Rusty I beg to differ...Rush said they Bush has Fla.!!!

Posted by: Laura at November 01, 2004 05:00 PM (ptOpl)

2 And Rush, you know, must be right?

3 My grandmother voted early in FL. and she said pretty much everyone in her home was voting for Bush. Well, except for one guy, apparently he was vocally for Kerry and the old lady next to my grandma said "I'd say something to that asshole, but I don't won't to start a fight." Go old people!

4 Rusty: Why, soitenly!!!! ;-)

5 and don't give Hawaii away so fast, either.

7 Rusty: I went to grad school (MBA) with a fellow who was a Democrat campaign consultant who wrote his thesis on a program to optimize the vote outcome for Democrats in the event of inclement weather. I doubt that he originated the concept, but it's empirical rather than theoretical. It very definitely happens. The fellow's name, by the way, was Don Homuth. Nice guy, for a D. He also came up with a good rule of thumb that he called "Homuth's Law." Basically in read: "Never sleep with anyone crazier than you are." Wish I'd followed it.

8 Speaking of crazy, that's probably pretty close to how I see things ending up, unfortunately. The exit polls in Fla seem to have Kerry leading at the moment by a sizeable margin. The end of the world draweth nigh!

Posted by: Ricky V at November 01, 2004 05:52 PM (AHaCg)

9 Kerry leading Florida!!!! OH my! But, RUSH says Bush's got it! You gotta believe Rush, right??

Posted by: Laura at November 01, 2004 05:55 PM (ptOpl)

10 Ricky V, Kerry is up in exit polling? Where did you get that info? Rusty, Nice to see you've come around to understanding Bush will end up with a victory. What changed your mind?

Posted by: Editor at November 01, 2004 06:02 PM (adpJH)

11 BTW, Laura, I asked Ricky that question because if it's the datat he's I think he's talking about you can rest assured it is very skewed numbers.

Posted by: Editor at November 01, 2004 06:09 PM (adpJH)

12 Aagghh! You said: "Jawa call Fla=Kerry." and I had to leave, quickly. Hyperventilating.

Posted by: m at November 01, 2004 06:10 PM (b3JO3)

13 Ahhhh forget Kerry and Bush. Lets move to Tatoine... I love hives of scum and villany. Great blog btw. xxxxx

14 Editor, perhaps "exit poll" was the wrong terminology, but found this at USA Today... USA Today Story Here's a snippet from it... In Florida, 30% of registered voters said they already had cast their ballots, using early voting sites and absentee ballots. They supported Kerry 51%-43%. ------------- Of course, we all know that they can choose to call up registered Ds for their survey, but it still disheartened me somewhat.

Posted by: Ricky V at November 01, 2004 06:11 PM (AHaCg)

15 Yeah, that's the one. It's already been eviserated - BIG TIME!!! Poll contradicts itself. Why? Because a number of people refused to answer who they voted for and Gallup decided on their own that 9 of 10 of the people would vote for Kerry. Yeah, that's about as good a methodology as that 100,000 extra dead report. Laura, take a deep breath, now. Ricky knew was he saw, but the real story was hidden from him.

Posted by: Editor at November 01, 2004 06:19 PM (adpJH)

16 A follow up... The main point is that the media is going to try and do the same thing they did in 2000 and call the race early to "dishearten" people from taking the time to go vote. That was the whole point of that poll and skewing the numbers the way they did. Think I'm paranoid? Think I'm pushing a "conspiracy" theory? I don't think so - USACNNGALLUP proved me right with that poll.

Posted by: Editor at November 01, 2004 06:26 PM (adpJH)

17 Holy Shit, Editor! My son said the same thing, and he's only FIFTEEN!!! He said if the news reports that Kerry's ahead, people will shrug their shoulders and maybe not vote, thinking he's way ahead anyway....or some shit like that. People don't give up!!!! Go and vote and don't listen to anything until tomorrow night. I hear they're saying the final results may not be in for days...weeks...maybe a recount. Jesus.

18 Dang, Laura, and I just got Hardbloggered(?) over at MSNBC regarding those same sentiments on my own blog. It, of course, was for mocking purposes by Dave Johnson. Can't wait for the hate mail.

Posted by: Editor at November 01, 2004 07:00 PM (adpJH)

19 Yah, I've been around enough to know that's the case. It still bums me out that they would report it like that. 2000 should have been a big eye-opener, but it still amazes me how biased the media is towards us left-brained-right-thinking types. I know how things work. I can't help but shake my head though.

Posted by: Ricky V at November 01, 2004 07:08 PM (AHaCg)

20 I guess Rusty's prediction is like going to tradesports and betting on Kerry...but with tradesports if you win the bet, you have money to drown your sorrows.

Posted by: Mr. K at November 01, 2004 07:10 PM (Kucaj)

21 This is the most media-hyped, vicious, slanderous, election campaign EVER...and I'll say it again and again! What mudslinging....what biased reporting on the cable news networks. Watch CNN....they say Kerry's ahead....watch FOX, they say Bush is ahead...listen to Rush and Billy Boy....all for Bush (but that's okay...ehehe). Maybe they should have a poll on who's better at reporting: CNN or FOX?? Who is MSNBC for? I don't even watch that one. Even my own newspaper's biased. Called the FW Star Telegram, or as it's more commonly known locally, "the Startle Gram". Later. :-)

22 Laura, we call ours the Charlotte Disturber. At least some have honest names, my old hometown paper is the Tallahassee Democrat. You know to put that one straight in the bird cage.

23 Ours here in Eugene I call the Red Guard instead of The Register Guard. My favourite Oregon talk show host, Lars Larson calls The Oregonian the daily dead fish wrapper.

Posted by: Ricky V at November 01, 2004 07:37 PM (AHaCg)

24 LOL! Amusing, isn't it? Love the way we've all got monikers for our local papers. My heart's still with The Daily News, my stomping grounds!!! We even had centerfold pics (no guys not THAT kind!) which showed in more complete detail, what was on the front page headlines...like a "continued here" thing. I'm not even watching TV right now...what's going on? Anything?

Posted by: Laura at November 01, 2004 08:24 PM (ptOpl)

25 Bush is going to win. Nuff Said. The military vote will be what puts Bush over the top. All of the media hype about this voting bloc is misplaced. The MSM has been solidly in Kerry camp since about 1967. Seems to me that as a soldier, I will NOT be saluting John Kerry, should be unlikely enough to steal his way into the White House. He is a traitorous, pinko commie, punk appeaser that isn't fit to be dog catcher. Regardless, come tomorrow, the grown ups will still be in charge.

28 In New Orleans we call it the Times Picayune (spanish for a penny) because a penny is all it's worth.

29 Thanks all for the input! The reason I say I think Bush will win, quite frankly, is because my track record at preditions is pretty bad! I only have to be wrong in MN or WI for Bush to clench it. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my gut tells me Florida goes Kerry.

Posted by: Rusty Shackleford at November 02, 2004 08:22 AM (JQjhA)

30 Mmmmm, now they're saying it just may be up to the "young voters" to clench the deal. Of course, over 70% of the military's voting for Bush, so what does that tell you? That they support their leader in the Iraq invasion. Hey, if it's okay with them, and THEY'RE the ones over there, who are we to bitch and moan?
