13 If you think that's bad, we had an issue here in TX, where this homeowner was told to take the American Flag down she had displayed on her house! Seems it was against the homeowner's association rules that you could only fly the flag on special occasions, like Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July etc. Reason being that it "detracted from the property value" and that it could open the door to any other kind of flag being displayed, such as a Confederate Flag, Swastika, whatever. The resident took it to court, and won, and is allowed to display her flag 24/7.

First off, there are several doctors that have stated Terri is not in a vegetative state. Further, there is a significant difference to being on life support and having a feeding tube. Also, Terri is responsive to people, which calls into question the 'vegetative' assessment. (Yes she has been in a vegetative state for 14 years, but in 1991, after receiving limited therapy, her condition improved. Her husband was advised to continue advanced therapy. He refused and has continued to refuse any type of therapy. Had he agreed to what doctors recommended, perhaps she would not be in the state she is in today.) Oh and the cost... Terri's parents requested a settlement with her husband (who has refused to divorce Terri, but has recently had two children another woman). The settlement would have given custody of Terri to her parents. The would agree to be responsible for all medical costs, as well as allow Michael to keep all malpractice settlements, and allow him to all rights on Terri's estate if/when she dies. Plus the would agree to never take any future legal action against him. He refused this offer. I find it interesting that if we starved a murderer or rapist in jail, it would be considered torture. If I starved my dog or cat, I would legally be prosecuted. But we can decide to starve an innocent woman merely because she doesn't have the voice to speak up. The thought of where this could lead is scary! Donny

12 Everyone says how sad it is, how heartless Michael is. But, honestly, let me ask you this...How many of them have honestly been put through it--put ont he other side of the fence? If I were on the outside, and never had an inside look, I might say that it would be wrong, she is still breathing, sahe still has a chance. But I have been on the other side of the fence, so I can see where he is coming from. There is nothing else worse than having to say goodbye to a loved one, or having to make that choice for them--but is it really fair to let them live with no quality of life? 13 In all fairness, Terri Schiavo's parents have alleged her injuries were at the hands of her husband all along. On the night she was admitted, several tests were run that showed she had been the victim of a possible strangulation, as well as evidence of recently broken bones that had healed. Plus, Terri Schiavo quit breathing, long enough for brain damage to occur, at the hands of a husband who knew CPR and had at one time been an EMT. Why didn't he perform CPR to save her? However, these medical records were sealed at the order of her husband, and have never made it to a court room. Prosecutors say they are now irrelevant, since the status of limitations on any crime committed then has passed. IMO, her husband is scared to death she will come out of this state and let the world know what an arrogant, violent man he is.

15 Marley, changing a bedpan isn't so bad. I have four children and I've changed diapers, cleaned up vomit, etc. because that's what people do for those they love. The people that could not communicate and had severe cases of AlzheimerÂ’s were the ones that were forgotten the most even though they were the ones that need the most attention. They may not have been aware of what was going on but if you took three minutes and gave it to them it made a world of difference. If Michael Shiavo wants to be rid of her even if it means starving her to death he might as well shoot her with a gun. People think that that would be inhuman. Well you know starvation was used by Hitler. Then it was also considered inhuman. At least if she was shot it would be quick and she would not have to be in pain for one or two weeks. But who REALLY cares if she is in pain, as long as Michael Shiavo can move on with his life.

21 quality of life lets see, what is quality of life for one, is not the same as it is for another. I worked with mentally and physically handicap people most of my life. MY GRANDFATHER taught me when i was a child what quality of life was. To him it was that winston cig you held for him, thats all he needed and all he desired was to smoke. He'd been a go getter his whole life, but with a disabling illness, that one cig was his quality of life. And beleive me he couldn't have been happier. Our quality of life is decided by the GOOD LORD ABOVE what he desires us to have. Not a husband, a parent, you or me. Just look at the lives she has touched, I beleive for what ever happens good or bad, its in GODS HANDS and he'll be there in the end either way. 22 I just happened to scan thru the posts and would like to share my views. First of all, to the person who said she knows more about PVS and brain death than most....perhaps you should do some reading. Persistent Vegetative State and Brain Death are not the same thing, even if people use the terms interchangeably. Brain Death is just that....the brain is dead. There are no brain waves, no brain function. In most states, this is considered legal death. After the tests that determine brain death are done, the patient is pronounced dead and life supports are removed. The patient's cardiac and respiratory functions cease shortly thereafter. This is in 'classic' brain death. However, this isn't in all cases. Some patients still exhibit minimal brain functioning, enough to sustain a heartbeat and breathing from several hours, to several days, to several years. This isn't true brain death. This can be lumped into 'persistent vegetative states'. Some people, esp those young and healthy when stricken, can keep breathing and circulating blood for years. Having to tube feed a semi-responsive adult and change their diapers is different from doing the same for a baby. Babies are growing and interacting with their caregivers. Hopefully they will grow up healthy and happy. People in PSVs can range from some level of interaction with their caregivers to minimal or none. They will not get better but rather continue to linger. They were usually healthy otherwise, which is why they didn't die during the acute phase of their illness or collapse. They will continue to exist for years. They live in nursing homes, where they will need to be turned every two hours or get bedsores. Their arms and legs need to be exercised frequently or they will become contracted, like Ms Schiavo's. They are being taken care of by people who are very overworked and who don't make very much money, yet you expect them to take excellent care of these people. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but trust me........if it comes down to a health care worker hurting themselves because there is inadequate help to get a semicomatose patient out of bed, or leaving them in bed, and therefore, more at risk of pneumonia and bedsores.....they're going to look out for themselves. I hope Terri's case serves as an example to people: Make a living will. Or you too can expect a long life filled with tube feedings, infections, limb contractures, diarrhea and bedsores. People are born, and people die and sadly, sometimes there are some people caught in between. Certainly not dead, and yet not quite alive. Unless you are personally willing to give up the rest of your life to make sure you can change Depends and turn someone every two hours and exercise their limbs and wash them and keep them clean. Don't stand in judgement of those who can't do it either. Don't hand over care of your loved one to a nursing home and expect them to care for this person, if you don't. How come I don't see swarms of concerned folk storming the hospitals and volunteering to care for the people they claim have a right to live? Make a living will!

23 All of the bleeding hearts who advocate keeping this poor woman alive should sign a will proclaiming their desire to be kept alive in a vegetative state for 20 years or longer if necessary. They should specify that they desire to have bedpans, diapers, bedsores, etc. etc. and to be cared for by their parents, spouses, children, with the financial assistance of all available charities, medicaid etc. The one thing about this which really disturbs me is that the alternative to continuing this sad existance is to starve her to death. We need the humanity of a Dr. Kevorkian to exit this world when all hope for recovery fails. At least animals who are suffering can be given a merciful injection and go quietly and painlessly.

24 I don't understand one point quite a few of you make here, so please let me grasp your idea: a person in a vegetative state is unable to hear, feel, or perceive anything, right? In other words, he/she does not exist as a person? Ok, so - why should such a non-person care about being kept alive in a vegetative state at all? If I am a vegetable, if my mind - my soul - is simply not there - why should I bother? The "I" of my personality (my persohood) no longer existing, who would bother about my body being hooked on ventilation? Not "me", definitely. So, only the people who are selfish enought not to tolerate the thought that human being can get old, can get sick, can get disbaled, that human beings need attention and care when old, sick, or disabled... Now, my thoughts on Terri's case. What gives me creeps really is the fact that despite that fact that her so-called husband has had a long term realionship plus two children (call it co-habitation, call it common law marriage, call it adultery, all in all he is not being a true and devouted husband to Terri), he is still her legal guardian. Would you like such a "husband" decide for you? What terrifies me even more is that Terri is denied any realiable medical procedures which would indicate the state she is in. Ok folks, let's assume she could be in a persistent vegetative state (she appears not to be, by the way - she responds to stimuli, which defies the definition of a PVS). Why is she denied a PET scan? The dirty thing about it is that there is no reliable data supporting the thesis that Terri is "a rotten tomatoe". If she really is one, ok folks, give me the proofs. Give me the PET scan, give me some lenghty examinations conducted by un-biased neurologists. As to money and all this "diapers changing": don't you worry, folks. There is her family, really eager to take care of Terri. It is not _your_ concern, it is even not the concern of her so-called husband. If the people want to take care of a "rotten tomatoe", as somebody called Terri (though I would say she is a severly disabled person), why shouldn't they be allowed to? Why do you bother about diaper-changing concerning a rotten tomatoe, if you are not in any way affected by it and if you think the tomatoe does not feel anything (nobody asks _you_ to do the diaper-thing for Terri, and as for money, her family is ready to cover the expenses)?

25 I have been so depressed over this case. I can not believe the society we live in. It sickens me. This poor woman is lying in bed screaming inside for someone to feed her at this very moment. I am scared for her. I just can't understand why human beings would let this happen. I have a severly retarded cousin who can not speak, can not go to the bathroom on her own,can not eat on her own, can not walk on her own and can not make eye contact.She is not unlike an infant. Yet she is happy. She smiles and laughs and loves. Should her mother stop feeding her.

26 Michael (the so called loving husband) was already awarded 1.2 million dollars after a malpractice lawsuit to cover her medical bills. Robert Herring even offered him 1 million if he would reverse his decision to have her feeding tube removed and let her parents be her guardian. Michael has refused antibotics for his wife when she was sick, a mri, and also swallow tests to see if she can eat on her own. The last swallow tests were done in 1992. Doctors do not believe she is PVS but her so called husband wont allow the testing and the proper treatment for her. Doctors believe she could improve greatly if she would get the treatment. I dont think he is interested so much in the money but to cover up what really happened to her and I believe he is responisible for what happened to her. Doctors have said that it is very unlikely this happened from low potassium especially to someone in their 20s. In the 1991 bone scan (which he did seal and her parents didnt know about until 199 revealed abnormal stress to her bones such as her back, ribs, sacrolliac joints, knees and ankles. It also states that she had close head injury. The doctors that examined her whenever she first got to the hospital said she had injuries similiar to strangulation. Michael said he heard a thud around 4:30 a.m. and saw her lying on the floor so he rolled her over onto her back. She did not breathe for 5 to 8 minutes even though he knew cpr. Her brother who lived in the same apartment complex was called and whenever he cane and saw her she was on her stomach face down. I have read numerous different web sites about the treatment that her husband has given her and the treatments he has refused and I just can not believe that he is still her guardian. Ive also seen videos of her and she is not a tomato. She moves her head, she makes noises, and smiles. I've seen elderly people in far more worse conditions than she is in. I just hope that the courts have enough brains and common sense to see that the only thing her loving husband is concerned about is killing her and I hope to God her parents get to be her guardians and let her get the proper medical treatment she deserves.

27 The furor that's been stirred up over this case sickens and saddens me. The only question that really, truly needs to be asked is simply "What would Terri have wanted?" That question has been asked, and answered. In 2000, a court decided that Terri's comments conclusively showed that she did not wish to be kept alive in a coma, or vegetative, or dependent state. Sure, the blogs will tell you that this ruling is being questioned now... but come on, it's pretty obvious that it's another one of the hail mary strategies that the family is using to keep postponing the inevitable. Terri didn't want to live dependent on others. She didn't want to be mute, paralyzed and capable of nothing more than tracking a freaking balloon across the ceiling. That should be the end of the story. I feel sorry for the parents, as well as the husband that their private pain has become another talking point in this bogus culture war that's being used to distract us against the fact that our national leaders are stomping on the accelerator and driving our country off the edge of the cliff. I feel especially sorry for the husband, currently being smeared and slandered and accused of everything from abuse, to attempted murder to a blatant money grab. I guess that conservatives automatically assume that every human action is motivated by naked greed, since that is their primary thought-mode. But if the husband was strictly on a money hunt, attempting to shirk his responsibilities or hoping to cover up evidence of some past foul play, wouldn't he have dropped this quest years and years ago, before it it metastastized into the hottest topic in the nation? No other explanation of his actions makes quite as much sense to me as that he truly believes this is what she would have wanted. So everyone should just get out of his way. As an interesting thought experiment, let's try to imagine if congress would have flown in from the corners of the nation and awakened the President to sign a life-saving bill if the vegetable in question had been 1)Black 3)Male or 3)In a coma due to drug use. Though I obviously can't prove it, I'd have to guess the answer is no. This media hysteria follows our national obsession with white, sympathetic, attractive females in danger. Whether it's JonBenet Ramsey or Laci Peterson, these threatened Aryan vessels of feminity seem make all our hearts palpitate in the way that other stories just don't.

However, the fact that you can WRITE anything makes you a completely different case than Terri. She can't express herself in any way. Did someone type your feelings on this matter for you, Captain, based on eye movements in order to know exactly what you wanted to say? Or have you the capacity to speak for yourself? If Terri had the ability to speak, write, or type her feelings, then you have the right to compare your situation to hers. Until then, I truly do wish you a life of continued fulfillment, but I also wish that you would not impose your zest for life on someone who hasn't had anything close to it for many, many agonizing years.

32 Doctor's have commented that this woman's mental state and physical state pretty much equal that of a mentally retarded individual or person with cerebral palsy. The woman responds to human touch. She smiles. She opens her eyes and looks at you. She may not be able to talk or express how she feels, but the fact remains that SHE DOES FEEL. What they are doing to her is inhumane in the least. She's dying slowly so that her husband can move on with his life. He needs to be investigated, at the very least she deserves that much. So, if you're so set on killing this woman. Look into the eyes of parents who have disabled children and tell them to put a gun to their child's head. Is it not basically the same principle?

33 A gun to their child's head is not at all the same thing, and how exactly is it that you have come to know what Terri wants? She experienced a quality of life at one time and then had it taken away. I have worked with people with cerebral palsy---children to be exact, and even the most severe cases can use sign language and gestures to convey their thoughts. Terri can do none of this, otherwise she would express her wishes and we could all stop making decisions and assumptions on her behalf. Do you know the staggering number of people who make it known in their wills that they do not want to be kept alive artificially? You must all ask yourselves if you would like to live in a bed without being able to speak, eat, drink, taste or move for 15 years. Would you want your husband/children to be stuck with millions of dollars of medical bills all for the privilege of changing your diapers, watching your bedsores grow bigger, and watching your body become painfully contracted with each passing day? I hope if my life ever comes to that, my family will do the just, humane thing and let me go. I also hope that do gooders will not take that right away from my husband or children as they have in Terri's case and decide that they know what is best for me.

34 Doctors will say whatever you want as long as you are the one paying them. I found this out during my workers comp suit. My question here is -- who can you believe -- the parents have their story, Michael has his story, the diagnosis of the doctors are totally different. You can make arguments for both sides of this issue. I can't see that this situation will ever be resolved in a manner that will satisfy everyone. I suppose we are all going to have to turn this one over to God.

Terri is a woman who needs support not an assault. Whether or not anyone would want to be in that situation goes without question.... of course none of us would want that. 40 As it so happens, I do think that the government should stay out of it, and I think the humane thing for Terri is and has always been to let her die. But it is not Terri's fault that selfish people insist on keeping her alive without regard to her welfare. There are sworn testimony records from doctors and nurses who examined Terri initially after her "injury" that determined that the potassium levels in her body were in fact, not high enough to indicate heart attack or stroke. There were also indications of a neck injury and/or possibility of strangulation. So, I guess it really boils down to who you believe. A man who stands to gain from her death, or not? There are too many stories. Too many things to be considered. All I'm saying is that Michael should be investigated. The judge ignored several legal items when deciding on this case, and has all along. It has been said that Terri was for several years able to be fed orally, until her husband (who cared about her so much?) asked that the oral feeding be stopped and a feeding tube be inserted because it was too costly to have a nurse physically feed her every 3-4 hours. Concerned about her well being? Or concerned about the money that wouldn't be available to him when she died because it was spent on her care? He stopped therapy and treatments that some doctor's say could have helped rehabilitate Terri. I wouldn't want to be alive either, and I'm sure she doesn't. But I sure as hell wouldn't want a man I was ready to divorce, who I had complained to friends and family had abused me, making decisions regarding my life, or lack of it. I don't think the woman should be kept alive under those conditions, but I sure don't think he should be the one making those decisions. The ACLU cracks me up. If we decided to kill a prisoner on death row by means of starvation and dehydration they'd be in everyone's face about basic human rights. I was very disturbed by the decision making protocol, as no allowance whatsoever was made for professional responsibility. The atmosphere throughout the facility was dominated by Mr. Schiavo's intimidation. Everyone there, with the exception of several people who seemed to be close to Michael, was intimidated by him. Michael Schiavo always had an overbearing attitude, yelling numerous times such things as "This is my order and you're going to follow it." He is very large and uses menacing body language, such as standing too close to you, getting right in your face and practically shouting. 6. To the best of my recollection, rehabilitation had been ordered for Terri, but I never saw any being done or had any reason at all to believe that there was ever any rehab of Terri done at Palm Gardens while I was there. I became concerned because Michael wanted nothing done for Terri at all, no antibiotics, no tests, no range of motion therapy, no stimulation, no nothing. Michael said again and again that Terri should NOT get any rehab, that there should be no range of motion whatsoever, or anything else. I and a CNA named Roxy would give Terri range of motion anyway. One time I put a wash cloth in Terri's hand to keep her fingers from curling together, and Michael saw it and made me take it out, saying that was therapy. 7. Terri's medical condition was systematically distorted and misrepresented by Michael. When I worked with her, she was alert and oriented. Terri spoke on a regular basis while in my presence, saying such things as "mommy," and "help me." "Help me" was, in fact, one of her most frequent utterances. I heard her say it hundreds of times. Terri would try to say the word "pain" when she was in discomfort, but it came out more like "pay." She didn't say the "n" sound very well. During her menses she would indicate her discomfort by saying "pay" and moving her arms toward her lower abdominal area. Other ways that she would indicate that she was in pain included pursing her lips, grimacing, thrashing in bed, curling her toes or moving her legs around. She would let you know when she had a bowel movement by flipping up the covers and pulling on her diaper and scooted in bed on her bottom. 8. When I came into her room and said "Hi, Terri", she would always recognize my voice and her name, and would turn her head all the way toward me, saying "Haaaiiiii" sort of, as she did. I recognized this as a "hi", which is very close to what it sounded like, the whole sound being only a second or two long. When I told her humrous stories about my life or something I read in the paper, Terri would chuckle, sometimes more a giggle or laugh. She would move her whole body, upper and lower. Her legs would sometimes be off the bed, and need to be repositioned. I made numerous entries into the nursing notes in her chart, stating verbatim what she said and her various behaviors, but by my next on-duty shift, the notes would be deleted from her chart. The reason I wrote so much was that everybody else seemed to be afraid to make positive entries for fear of their jobs, but I felt very strongly that a nurses job was to accurately record everything we see and hear that bears on a patients condition and their family. I upheld the Nurses Practice Act, and if it cost me my job, I was willing to accept that. 9. Throughout my time at Palm Gardens, Michael Schiavo was focused on Terri's death. Michael would say "When is she going to die?," "Has she died yet?" and "When is that bitch gonna die?" These statements were common knowledge at Palm Gardens, as he would make them casually in passing, without regard even for who he was talking to, as long as it was a staff member. Other statements which I recall him making include "Can't anything be done to accelerate her death - won't she ever die?" When she wouldn't die, Michael would be furious. Michael was also adamant that the family should not be given information. He made numerous statements such as "Make sure the parents aren't contacted." I recorded Michael's statements word for word in Terri's chart, but these entries were also deleted after the end of my shift. Standing orders were that the family wasn't to be contacted, in fact, there was a large sign in the front of her chart that said under no circumstances was her family to be called, call Michael immediately, but I would call them, anyway, because I thought they should know about their daughter. 10. Any time Terri would be sick, like with a UTI [urinary tract infection]or fluid buildup in her lungs, colds, or pneumonia, Michael would be visibly excited, thrilled even, hoping that she would die. He would say something like, "Hallelujah! You've made my day!" He would call me, as I was the nurse supervisor on the floor, and ask for every little detail about her temperature, blood pressure, etc., and would call back frequently asking if she was dead yet. He would blurt out "I'm going to be rich!" and would talk about all the things he would buy when Terri died, which included a new car, a new boat, and going to Europe, among other things. 11. When Michael visited Terri, he always came alone and always had the door closed and locked while he was with Terri. He would typically be there about twenty minutes or so. When he left Terri would be trembling, crying hysterically, and would be very pale and have cold sweats. It looked to me like Terri was having a hypoglycemic reaction, so I'd check her blood sugar. The glucometer reading would be so low it was below the range where it would register an actual number reading. I would put dextrose in Terri's mouth to counteract it. This happened about five times on my shift, as I recall. Normally Terri's blood sugar levels were very stable due to the uniformity of her diet through tube feeding. It is medically possible that Michael injected Terri with Regular insulin, which is very fast acting, but I don't have any way of knowing for sure. 12. The longer I was employed at Palm Gardens the more concerned I became about patient care, both relating to Terri Schiavo, for the reasons I've said, and other patients, too. There was an LPN named Carolyn Adams, known as "Andy" Adams who was a particular concern. An unusual number of patients seemed to die on her shift, but she was completely unconcerned, making statements such as "They are old - let them die." I couldn't believe her attitude or the fact that it didn't seem to attract any attention. She made many comments about Terri being a waste of money, that she should die. She said it was costing Michael a lot of money to keep her alive, and that he complained about it constantly (I heard him complain about it all the time, too.) Both Michael and Adams said that she would be worth more to him if she were dead. I ultimately called the police relative to this situation, and was terminated the next day. Other reasons were cited, but I was convinced it was because of my "rocking the boat." 13. Ms. Adams was one of the people who did not seem to be intimidated by Michael. In fact, they seemed to be very close, and Adams would do whatever Michael told her. Michael sometimes called Adams at night and spoke at length. I was not able to hear the content of these phone calls, but I knew it was him talking to her because she would tell me afterward and relay orders from him. 14. I asked why Terri was not up in a chair, too. I learned, as part of my training, that there was a family dispute and that the husband, as guardian, wanted no rehabilitation for Terri. This surprised me, as I did not think a guardian could go against a doctor's orders like that, but I was assured that a guardian could and that this guardian had gone against Terri's doctor's orders. 5. No one was allowed to just go in and see Terri. Michael had a visitors list. We all knew that we would lose our jobs if we did not do exactly what Michael said to do. 6. I remember seeing Michael Schiavo only once the entire time I worked at Sabal Palms, but we were all aware that Terri was not to be given any kind of rehabilitative help, per his instructions. Once, I wanted to put a cloth in Terri's hand to keep her hand from closing in on itself, but I was not permitted to do this, as Michael Schiavo considered that to be a form of rehabilitation. 7. This entire experience made me look hard at nursing homes. After about two years, I quit this job, because I was so disillusioned with the way Terri was treated. I was personally aware of orders for rehabilitation that were not being carried out. Even though they were ordered, Michael would stop them. Michael ordered that Terri receive no rehabilitation or range of motion therapy. I and Olga would give Terri range of motion anyway, but we knew we were endangering our jobs by doing so. We usually did this behind closed doors, we were so fearful of being caught. Our hearts would race and we were always looking out for Michael, because we knew that, not only would Michael take his anger out on us, but he would take it out more on Terri. We spoke of this many times. 5. Terri had very definite likes and dislikes. Olga and I used to call Terri "Fancy Pants," because she was so particular about certain things. She just adored her baths, and was so happy afterward when she was all clean, smelling sweet from the lotion her mother provided, and wearing the soft nightgowns her mother laundered for her. Terri definitely did not like the taste of the teeth-cleaning swabs or the mouthwash we used. She liked to have her hair combed. She did not like being tucked in, and especially hated it if her legs were tightly tucked. You would always tell when Terri had a bowel movement, as she seem agitated and would sort of "scoot" to get away from it. 6. Every day, Terri was gotten up after lunch and sat in a chair all afternoon. When Terri was in bed, she very much preferred to lie on her right side and look out the window. We always said that she was watching for her mother. It was very obvious that her mother was her favorite person in the whole world. 7. I worked side-by-side with another CNA named Olga and could tell that she and Terri were especially close. Olga took a definite personal interest in Terri, and Terri responded to her. I could tell that Terri was very satisfied and happy with Olga's attentions to her. 8. When Olga was talking with Terri, Terri would follow Olga with her eyes. I have no doubt in my mind that Terri understood what Olga was saying to her. I could tell a definite difference between the way Terri responded to Olga and the way she reacted to me, until she got used to my taking care of her. Initially, she "clammed up" with me, the way she would with anyone she did not know or was not familiar or comfortable with. It took about the fourth or fifth time taking care of her alone, without Olga, that Terri became relaxed and cooperative and non-resistant with me. 9. Terri reacted very well to seeing a picture of her mother, which was in her room. Many times when I came on duty it would be lying face down where she could not see it. 10. At least three times during any shift where I took care of Terri, I made sure to give Terri a wet washcloth filled with ice chips, to keep her mouth moistened. I personally saw her swallow the ice water and never saw her gag. Olga and I frequently put orange juice or apple juice in her washcloth to give her something nice to taste, which made her happy. On three or four occasions I personally fed Terri small mouthfuls of Jello, which she was able to swallow and enjoyed immensely. I did not do it more often only because I was so afraid of being caught by Michael. 11. On one occasion Michael Schiavo arrived with his girlfriend, and they entered Terri's room together. I heard Michael tell his girlfriend that Terri was in a persistent vegetative state and was dying. After they left, Olga told me that Terri was extremely agitated and upset, and wouldn't react to anyone. When she was upset, which was usually the case after Michael was there, she would withdraw for hours. We were convinced that he was abusing her, and probably saying cruel, terrible things to her because she would be so upset when he left. 12. In the past, I have taken care of comatose patients, including those in a persistent vegetative state. While it is true that those patients will flinch or make sounds occasionally, they don't do it as a reaction to someone on a constant basis who is taking care of them, the way I saw Terri do. 13. I witnessed a priest visiting Terri a couple of times. Terri would become quiet when he prayed with her. She couldn't bow her head because of her stiff neck, but she would still try. During the prayer, she would keep her eyes closed, opening them afterward. She laughed at jokes he told her. I definitely know that Terri "is in there." 14. The Palm Gardens staff, myself included, were just amazed that a "Do Not Resuscitate" order had been put on Terri's chart, considering her age and her obvious cognitive awareness of her surroundings. 15. During the time I cared for Terri, she formed words. I have heard her say "mommy" from time to time, and "momma," and she also said "help me" a number of times. She would frequently make noises like she was trying to talk. Other staff members talked about her verbalizations. 16. Several times when Michael visited Terri during my shift, he went into her room alone and closed the door. This worried me because I didn't trust Michael. When he left, Terri was very agitated, was extremely tense with tightened fists and some times had a cold sweat. She was much less responsive than usual and would just stare out the window, her eyes kind of glassy. It would take much more time and effort than usual to work her hands open to clean her palms. 17. I was told by supervisory staff that Michael was Terri's legal guardian, and that it didn't matter what the parents or the doctors or nurses wanted, just do what Michael told you to do or you will lose your job. Michael would override the orders of the doctors and nurses to make sure Terri got no treatment. Among the things that Terri was deprived of by Michael's orders were any kind of testing, dental care or stimulation. I was ordered by my supervisors to limit my time with Terri. I recall telling my supervisor that Terri seemed abnormally warm to the touch. I was told to pull her covers down, rather than to take her temperature. As far as I know, Terri never left her room. The only stimulation she had was looking out the window and watching things, and the radio, which Michael insisted be left on one particular station. She had a television, and there was a sign below it saying not to change the channel. This was because of Michael's orders. 18. As a CNA, I wanted every piece of information I could get about my patients. I never had access to medical records as a CNA, but it was part of my job duties to write my observations down on sheets of paper, which I turned over to the nurse at the nurses station for inclusion in the patients charts. In the case of Terri Schiavo, I felt that my notes were thrown out without even being read. There were trash cans at the nurses stations that we were supposed to empty each shift, and I often saw the notes in them. I made extensive notes and listed all of Terri's behaviors, but there was never any apparent follow up consistent with her responsiveness. 19. I discussed this situation with other personnel at Palm Gardens, particularly with Olga, and another CNA, an older black man named Ewan Morris. We all discussed the fact that we could be fired for reporting that Terri was responsive, and especially for giving her treatment. The advice among the staff was "don't do nothin', don't see nothin' and don't say nothin'." It was particularly distressing that we always had to be afraid that if Michael got upset, he would take his anger out on Terri. 20. I recall an incident when Olga became very upset because Terri started to get a sore spot, because it might lead to a bedsore. Michael was told about it but didn't seem to care. he didn't complain about it at all, in fact, saying "she doesn't know the difference." When Michael visited Terri, he always came alone and always had the door closed and locked while he was with Terri. He would typically be there about twenty minutes or so. When he left Terri would be trembling, crying hysterically, and would be very pale and have cold sweats. It looked to me like Terri was having a hypoglycemic reaction, so I'd check her blood sugar. The glucometer reading would be so low it was below the range where it would register an actual number reading. I would put dextrose in Terri's mouth to counteract it. This happened about five times on my shift, as I recall. Normally Terri's blood sugar levels were very stable due to the uniformity of her diet through tube feeding. It is medically possible that Michael injected Terri with Regular insulin, which is very fast acting, but I don't have any way of knowing for sure. 12. The longer I was employed at Palm Gardens the more concerned I became about patient care, both relating to Terri Schiavo, for the reasons I've said, and other patients, too. There was an LPN named Carolyn Adams, known as "Andy" Adams who was a particular concern. An unusual number of patients seemed to die on her shift, but she was completely unconcerned, making statements such as "They are old - let them die." I couldn't believe her attitude or the fact that it didn't seem to attract any attention. She made many comments about Terri being a waste of money, that she should die. She said it was costing Michael a lot of money to keep her alive, and that he complained about it constantly (I heard him complain about it all the time, too.) Both Michael and Adams said that she would be worth more to him if she were dead. I ultimately called the police relative to this situation, and was terminated the next day. Other reasons were cited, but I was convinced it was because of my "rocking the boat." 13. Ms. Adams was one of the people who did not seem to be intimidated by Michael. In fact, they seemed to be very close, and Adams would do whatever Michael told her. Michael sometimes called Adams at night and spoke at length. I was not able to hear the content of these phone calls, but I knew it was him talking to her because she would tell me afterward and relay orders from him. 14. This surprised me, as I did not think a guardian could go against a doctor's orders like that, but I was assured that a guardian could and that this guardian had gone against Terri's doctor's orders. 5. No one was allowed to just go in and see Terri. Michael had a visitors list. We all knew that we would lose our jobs if we did not do exactly what Michael said to do. 6. I remember seeing Michael Schiavo only once the entire time I worked at Sabal Palms, but we were all aware that Terri was not to be given any kind of rehabilitative help, per his instructions. Once, I wanted to put a cloth in Terri's hand to keep her hand from closing in on itself, but I was not permitted to do this, as Michael Schiavo considered that to be a form of rehabilitation. 7. This entire experience made me look hard at nursing homes. After about two years, I quit this job, because I was so disillusioned with the way Terri was treated. Terri was noticeable, because she was the youngest patient at Palm Gardens. 4. I know that Terri did not receive routine physical therapy or any other kind of therapy. I was personally aware of orders for rehabilitation that were not being carried out. Even though they were ordered, Michael would stop them. Michael ordered that Terri receive no rehabilitation or range of motion therapy. I and Olga would give Terri range of motion anyway, but we knew we were endangering our jobs by doing so. We usually did this behind closed doors, we were so fearful of being caught. Our hearts would race and we were always looking out for Michael, because we knew that, not only would Michael take his anger out on us, but he would take it out more on Terri. We spoke of this many times. 5. Terri had very definite likes and dislikes. Olga and I used to call Terri "Fancy Pants," because she was so particular about certain things. She just adored her baths, and was so happy afterward when she was all clean, smelling sweet from the lotion her mother provided, and wearing the soft nightgowns her mother laundered for her. Terri definitely did not like the taste of the teeth-cleaning swabs or the mouthwash we used. She liked to have her hair combed. She did not like being tucked in, and especially hated it if her legs were tightly tucked. You would always tell when Terri had a bowel movement, as she seem agitated and would sort of "scoot" to get away from it. 6. Every day, Terri was gotten up after lunch and sat in a chair all afternoon. When Terri was in bed, she very much preferred to lie on her right side and look out the window. We always said that she was watching for her mother. It was very obvious that her mother was her favorite person in the whole world. 7. I worked side-by-side with another CNA named Olga and could tell that she and Terri were especially close. Olga took a definite personal interest in Terri, and Terri responded to her. I could tell that Terri was very satisfied and happy with Olga's attentions to her. 8. When Olga was talking with Terri, Terri would follow Olga with her eyes. I have no doubt in my mind that Terri understood what Olga was saying to her. I could tell a definite difference between the way Terri responded to Olga and the way she reacted to me, until she got used to my taking care of her. Initially, she "clammed up" with me, the way she would with anyone she did not know or was not familiar or comfortable with. It took about the fourth or fifth time taking care of her alone, without Olga, that Terri became relaxed and cooperative and non-resistant with me. 9. Terri reacted very well to seeing a picture of her mother, which was in her room. Many times when I came on duty it would be lying face down where she could not see it. 10. At least three times during any shift where I took care of Terri, I made sure to give Terri a wet washcloth filled with ice chips, to keep her mouth moistened. I personally saw her swallow the ice water and never saw her gag. Olga and I frequently put orange juice or apple juice in her washcloth to give her something nice to taste, which made her happy. On three or four occasions I personally fed Terri small mouthfuls of Jello, which she was able to swallow and enjoyed immensely. I did not do it more often only because I was so afraid of being caught by Michael. 11. On one occasion Michael Schiavo arrived with his girlfriend, and they entered Terri's room together. I heard Michael tell his girlfriend that Terri was in a persistent vegetative state and was dying. After they left, Olga told me that Terri was extremely agitated and upset, and wouldn't react to anyone. When she was upset, which was usually the case after Michael was there, she would withdraw for hours. We were convinced that he was abusing her, and probably saying cruel, terrible things to her because she would be so upset when he left. 12. In the past, I have taken care of comatose patients, including those in a persistent vegetative state. While it is true that those patients will flinch or make sounds occasionally, they don't do it as a reaction to someone on a constant basis who is taking care of them, the way I saw Terri do. 13. I witnessed a priest visiting Terri a couple of times. Terri would become quiet when he prayed with her. She couldn't bow her head because of her stiff neck, but she would still try. During the prayer, she would keep her eyes closed, opening them afterward. She laughed at jokes he told her. I definitely know that Terri "is in there." 14. The Palm Gardens staff, myself included, were just amazed that a "Do Not Resuscitate" order had been put on Terri's chart, considering her age and her obvious cognitive awareness of her surroundings. 15. During the time I cared for Terri, she formed words. I have heard her say "mommy" from time to time, and "momma," and she also said "help me" a number of times. She would frequently make noises like she was trying to talk. Other staff members talked about her verbalizations. 16. Several times when Michael visited Terri during my shift, he went into her room alone and closed the door. This worried me because I didn't trust Michael. When he left, Terri was very agitated, was extremely tense with tightened fists and some times had a cold sweat. She was much less responsive than usual and would just stare out the window, her eyes kind of glassy. It would take much more time and effort than usual to work her hands open to clean her palms. 17. I was told by supervisory staff that Michael was Terri's legal guardian, and that it didn't matter what the parents or the doctors or nurses wanted, just do what Michael told you to do or you will lose your job. Michael would override the orders of the doctors and nurses to make sure Terri got no treatment. Among the things that Terri was deprived of by Michael's orders were any kind of testing, dental care or stimulation. I was ordered by my supervisors to limit my time with Terri. I recall telling my supervisor that Terri seemed abnormally warm to the touch. I was told to pull her covers down, rather than to take her temperature. As far as I know, Terri never left her room. The only stimulation she had was looking out the window and watching things, and the radio, which Michael insisted be left on one particular station. She had a television, and there was a sign below it saying not to change the channel. This was because of Michael's orders. 18. As a CNA, I wanted every piece of information I could get about my patients. I never had access to medical records as a CNA, but it was part of my job duties to write my observations down on sheets of paper, which I turned over to the nurse at the nurses station for inclusion in the patients charts. In the case of Terri Schiavo, I felt that my notes were thrown out without even being read. There were trash cans at the nurses stations that we were supposed to empty each shift, and I often saw the notes in them. I made extensive notes and listed all of Terri's behaviors, but there was never any apparent follow up consistent with her responsiveness. 19. I discussed this situation with other personnel at Palm Gardens, particularly with Olga, and another CNA, an older black man named Ewan Morris. We all discussed the fact that we could be fired for reporting that Terri was responsive, and especially for giving her treatment. The advice among the staff was "don't do nothin', don't see nothin' and don't say nothin'." It was particularly distressing that we always had to be afraid that if Michael got upset, he would take his anger out on Terri. 20. I recall an incident when Olga became very upset because Terri started to get a sore spot, because it might lead to a bedsore. Michael was told about it but didn't seem to care. he didn't complain about it at all, in fact, saying "she doesn't know the difference." 69 Diane Meyer remembers when she was Terri Schindler, a chubby child with big brown eyes behind Coke-bottle glasses, a guest at Meyer’s 3rd-birthday party at the Philadelphia Zoo. As the birthday girl, Diane was given a key to storybooks posted around the zoo. Turn the key, and a recorded voice would talk about the animals. Other children at the party wanted a key, too, and were jealous. But not Terri. “She was just so excited,” so happy to be there, so thrilled to among the animals she loved more than anything in the world, Meyer said. This is the Terri she remembers — not the heartbreaking figure whose every facial tic was scrutinized for evidence of a conscious mind within. Not the central figure of a maelstrom, silent as multitudes debated her life and death. For those multitudes who never knew her, it was easy to forget that this was a real woman who led a real life. But for her friends and family, it was impossible to forget Meyer, for instance, remembers the time more than 20 years ago when an excited Terri called her at college. She had a date — the first date this once overweight girl had ever had. Please, Terri begged, you have to come home and help me get ready. Meyer couldn’t make it home in time, but she was there the next day, to rehash Terri’s spectacular night of romance. The boy was tall and handsome and he had kissed her. The boy was Michael Schiavo; she had met him at a sociology class at Bucks County Community College, and they married a little more than a year later. He would be her only lover. She did not go to her senior prom. She had had crushes, of course, unrequited — a boy named Vincent in seventh grade, for one. She adored Danielle Steel romances, pored over Tiger Beat magazine with her friends, debated who was cutest — Starsky or Hutch. She liked Starsky, and with her friend Sue Pickwell wrote scores of letters to Paul Michael Glaser, the actor. Once, she and Meyer went to see “An Officer and a Gentleman” four times in one day. She was a shy person. Her high school yearbook, from Archbishop Wood in suburban Philadelphia, lists only one activity — library aide. The Rev. Chris Walsh, the school minister, said while several teachers remain from those days, only one remembers Terri, and not much about her. Benjamin Shatz lived next to the Schindlers’ four-bedroom colonial on Red Wing Lane in the Albidale section of Huntingdon Valley. All he remembers is “a nice child, respectful, polite.” Her shyness may have had something to do with her weight. Just 5-foot-3, she weighed 200 pounds in high school. “She cried a lot when she went to get clothes,” said her mother, Mary. But Meyer remembers laughter, instead. “Among those who knew her, she was always vivacious. She had a laugh that made everyone laugh,” she said. She collected Precious Moments figurines, and stuffed animals — she had more than 100 of them, and spent hours in her purple-and-white bedroom arranging them. The Schindlers — Mary and Robert (owner of an industrial equipment company) and their children Theresa Marie, Bobby and Suzanne — were a tight-knit family. Terri joined her mother for Mass on Saturdays, and all would gather round the table for roast beef on Sunday. She was especially close to her mother. “When people say I was her best friend, I say no,” said Meyer. “I was her closest friend. Her mother was her best friend.” After she and Michael were married — on Nov. 10, 1984, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, she in Victorian white with a pink-and-white bouquet, he in a gray tuxedo — the couple lived in the Schindlers’ basement. In 1986, they moved into a condominium her parents owned in Florida, paying $400-a-month rent; the rest of the Schindlers also moved to the Sunshine State. By this time, the 200-pound Terri was no more. Dieting, she had lost more than 50 pounds by the time she started college. She dyed her hair blonde, wore a bikini, liked to tan and drive her Trans Am past construction sites. “Terri has always been beautiful from the inside out,” Meyer said. “And then when she lost all the weight, she really became quite beautiful on the outside as well. Mistakes were not done on purpose. Furthermore, if the enemy would fight with honor according to the rules of war, far less errors would occur. Other units stationed in cities and such may have had different experiences. Such as bombings and ambushes by out of uniform enemy. I did not. I was always in the field. Doing my job and hoping to get back in one piece. There wasn't many Lt Calleys in Vietnam. But its good fodder for liberal hippies wishing to use anything and everything to further their beliefs. The Cong and NVA took prisoners. They did sometimes resort to various tortures and cruel treatment. They also kept prisoners for up to six years. Most of the prisoners came home. Thats not what our boys are living with now. My son has told me he will be killed before being captured. No choice. In Nam we had a choice. 46 I just want to say that I served in Iraq and returned home within the last week. I am pround to have served over there and not sat in a comfy raolling chair behind some desk in an air conditioned office complaining about how life sucks or how I am going to make my next million. We are making a positive difference each and every day. I was with an engineer unit building schools, clinics, road projects, etc. Positive things your don't see on the news. I used to be with the MI unit that was at Abu Ghraib but jumped into the engineer unit prior to the beginning of the operation. I know one of the soldiers who pleaded guilty. I know what those soldiers may have felt like when they lost some of their own leading up to the abuse, many others wounded. Many were my friends too. However, that does not give anyone the right to go as far as they did. Forcing prisoners to have sex? There is a limit and some of what was occuring goes against what we in the military and what we as citizens of a free and democratic society believe in. What many do not understand is the prisoner abuse plastered on the news made our job much more difficult over there. They tried to get information from the detainees but what they did caused more harm than good. Many Iraqis who were sitting on the fence were then against us. Those who worked for us asked why. Why would americans do that? Why? Some even quit and we found it very difficult to get things done because nobody wanted to work for us. One question that stuck out in my mind asked by one of my Iraqi engineers was, "Why would the american media show that?" The answer was simple. Freedom of the press. Now, I am going to change the topic slightly. The media feeds off negative information, the terrorist know that and in a way they have one the information battle. Al Jezeera isn't alone... ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, FOX... all of them rarely show any of the positive things happening over there. My unit did well over 700 amazing projects and none made it into anything more than our local news back home, mostly print media. We have many freedoms we should all be thankful for. There is a reason for the sacrifices we make every day. Our soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen and women are fighting in Iraq to keep terrorists from fighting here at home.

6 Absolutely amazing, isn't it? When I went back to college in my mid-thirties, one of my theses was on the Holocaust. It seemed like years before rumors even hit our shores but when we actually went there (ie Normandy and other strategic places) , our forces were in for the shock of their lives. History came from the survivors. I was amazed at the numbers; numbers of Russians, numbers of criminals and the horrific numbers of Jews. One of the first group of Americans to come across a death camp was a platoon of black men; theseblack people were unknown to them at the time but this group were their saviors. Both groups of people were in shock, per se. I did an excellent paper on this but I had no idea the UN was even in place then much less coming to the conclusion genocide was not happening, just as genocide is not happening in Darfur or other places around the world. The UN is supposed to make sure these actions do not happen and if they are, take immediate action - and as we all know, the UN has not taken any action against anyone. So why are we bothering with them? Money was given by our govt but we all saw the President Bush has been pushing for donations to go into individual groups through Freedom Corps because he knew those donations would get to where they had to go long before all the monies of given to the UN from countries' governments will ever reach them and reach them way too late. We've had discussions about the UN before and like all the oldies' here, we believed the UN building should be razed and buried into the nearest river in NYC and all those in it, sent back to the countries fro whence they came instead of living freely in our country. Now that I know they were also involved with the situation in Germany with over 10M people killed (6M jews) only pisses me off more. 8 I have a collection of Natural Geos. I often look at the ones from the late 1930s. Unbelieveable stuff. The numbers of people in the US that were pro Germany is hard to understand given what we know now. There were pro Germany parades and demostations. Particularly in the North East.
