Al Jazeera Caught Red-Handed

Terrorist media outlet Al Jazeera still has this story posted on their website passing on al Qaeda second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahiri's instructions to his terrorist minions:

Al-Qaida deputy chief Ayman al-Zawahiri has said in a video posted on a website that the network's leader Osama bin Laden is alive and leading the jihad against the West.

In a bid to play down US claims of achieving progress in the "war on terror", al-Zawahiri said al-Qaida was expanding, spreading and getting stronger, and called on supporters to attack oil sites in Muslim countries.

The story is posted as breaking news, but the videotape is three months old, as this story from Netscape News points out.
Al-Jazeera said a videotape it aired Wednesday showing Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri claiming that bin Laden was still alive and leading "jihad" or holy war against the West dated back to September.

In the tape, Al-Jazeera said Zawahiri also called for attacks on oil installations, remarks that sent oil prices higher on international markets.

"We got the videotape in September, and back then we aired what we thought were the important parts," Al-Jazeera editor-in-chief Ahmad Sheikh told AFP.

"There was a misunderstanding today, and we aired these extracts today by mistake."

Yes, definitely a mistake to get caught actively participating in a terrorist organization's propaganda effort. Al Jazeera has made themselves a legitimate target in the War on Terror. If Qatar refuses to shut them down, well, that's what precision munitions are for.

UPDATE by Rusty Shackleford: Al Jazeera lies, MSM eats it up and reports as fact. U.S. tells truth, MSM skeptical of claims. See anything perverse here?

1 Al Jazeera is owned by the Emir and government of Quatar. The country is host to both critical and substantial US military operations. In fact, there is a significant US military installation just 4 miles from Al Jazeera's headquarters. The Emir has been a consistant ally of the US. He has his own agenda that is opposed to the jihadists (though leans more towards the overall Status Quo in the region - its good to be king). So, what's going on here? Personally, I suspect Al Jazeera is a "closet asset" - though don't ask me for proof. Bush's comment about bombing it (if he even said it) would have clearly been meant as a joke (like Reagan's - the bombing starts in ... comment off-mike). Al Jazeera may well be the "useful idiot". There is a complex covert war going on out there which we know little about. If Al Jazeera were truly "a problem" the Emir could quitely handle it with just a couple of pinkslips. there is definitely more going on here than meets the eye.

4 404 @ that URL tucker. "still alive and leading the jihad" This after one year without a video/audio statement from him? It's looking more likely he is incapacitated or dead, especially as he needs #2 to confirm he is still alive three months ago?

6 And this would be different from blogs', say Hurry-Up Harry's, citing MEMRI articles of several years' age to highlight the stupidity of some Muslims?

7 Why yes, JB, completely different. AJ didn't report this on background, they reported it as breaking news. Not only completely dishonest, but designed to provide direction and encouragement to terrorists.

8 You know for someone who has millions and millions in support of him, and a supposed world wide recognition that America is Evil, Osama has yet to appear in public and talk to his loyal fans.

9 Why the hell you call Al Jazeera a terrorist media outlet? Do you have any credible reasons to justify your claim? I firmly believe that Al Jazeera is like any other media organization trying to bring perspective from all sides. That's why their slogan is "opinion - counter opinion". They do air views of Osama and the like, but they also air speeches of George W. Bush, Rumsfield, US commanders, etc, those also with translation in Arabic so people can understand the American viewpoint. By the way, what are your views on "American No. 1" news channel, Fox News? Is it "fair and balanced" as it claims? Or, is it another terrorist media outlet of US armed forces?

10 Hey someone, add another layer of tinfoil and STFU, because we don't need any more chickenshit terrorist sympathizers here, so take your conspiracy theories and shove them up your ass while you're leaving.
