Putin Caught Plagiarizing

The Washington Times reports that large parts of an economics thesis written by President Vladimir Putin in the mid-1990s were lifted straight out of a U.S. management textbook published 20 years earlier.

Not surprised one bit. Long time readers know that I spent a year studying at a university in Moscow, Russia. Plagiarism is rampant and so is cheating. Russian students make American students look like angels. I'm completely serious. And I'm saying this while looking at an academic violation report on my desk right now because I caught a student cheating on the midterm. In fact, my experience was that professors not only expected what we would consider cheating, but they encouraged it. more...

Will Blog for Food--Is it time to leave academia? (UPDATED)

Scroll down for updates.

I'm pretty depressed about not getting that job. It was my dream job. So, I'm starting to think about leaving academia. Apparently I'm a much better blogger than I am a teacher or academic. The only other skill I have is lover, but I'm afraid Mrs. Shackleford put an end to pimping my favors out long ago.

So, that leaves me with blogging. If there is anybody out there that needs a semi-famous anonymous blogger to write for whatever cause they're into, I'm willing to do it. Cheap. And by famous, I mean in the professional bowling sense of the word. You know, medium sized fish in very small and obscure pond. Call me a whore, but I need the money and I'm sick and tired of dealing with barely literate students with inflated senses of entitlement. more...

Man Divorces Wife While Sleeping

(West Bengal, India) Using all my imagination, I couldn't come up with this scenario.

From Aljazeera.net:

A Muslim couple in India have been told by local Islamic leaders that they must separate after the husband "divorced" his wife in his sleep.

The Press Trust of India said in a report published on Monday that Sohela Ansari had told friends that her husband Aftab had uttered the word "talaq" or divorce, three times in his sleep.

When local Islamic leaders heard about the incident, they said Aftab's words constituted a divorce under an Islamic procedure known as "triple talaq."

The couple, married for 11 years with three children, were told that they had to split.

The religious leaders ruled that if the couple wanted to remarry they would have to wait at least 100 days. Sohela would also have to marry another man, spend at least a night with him and be divorced by him.

So, in a nutshell, Aftab accidentally divorces his wife because he talks in his sleep, OR she made it up to get rid of him. Either way, I'm bewildered by the screwiness of the religion of peace.

Interpol Warns of Al Qaeda Biological Attack

(Singapore) According to Ronald Noble, Secretary-General of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), al Qaeda terrorists are preparing to engage in biological warfare. Countries are being urged to pass laws to allow police to investigate scientific activity that leads to manufacture of biological weapons.

From KhaleejTimes.com:

There is enough evidence to show that Al Qaeda is preparing to engage in biological warfare, Noble said.

"It can't be that we as a world community have to wait for a September 11 type of attack in bio-terrorism before we prepare," Noble told government officials, police and health experts attending the Asian Terrorism Workshop.

Representatives of 26 Asian nations were encouraged to implement law enforcement measures to prevent biological attacks.
"Unlike other forms of terrorist acts where the impact can be felt almost instantaneously in the aftermath, we may not realize that a biological attack has occurred until perhaps days or even weeks later," said Ho Peng Kee, Singapore's senior minister of state for law and home affairs.

"By that time, the terrorist may already have fled the country or succumbed to the biological agent, and all the valuable investigative leads may have disappeared," Ho noted in a keynote address.

I'd interpret the overall message from the conference as, "Listen up, people. It's time to quit sitting on your thumbs."

Senate Judiciary Committee Sells Country Down the River

Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee decided today to forego the rule of law in this country, at least as it applies to immigration laws. They voted to decriminalize illegal aliens and those who aid and abet them.

From MSNBC:

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

Presumably, the Republicans are motivated by the prospect of dirt-cheap labor, while the Democrats hope to harvest votes from the illegal immigrant "community".

The question now is why the Senate Judiciary Committee thinks that reformed immigration laws will be obeyed, since they've just demonstrated that disobeying the law carries no penalties and offers enormous benefits for the criminal.

Meanwhile, the tens of thousands of people who are waiting to legally immigrate have just been slapped in the face.

Abdul Rahman Released

CNN is flying a banner saying Abdul has been released from custody.

Developing...

FOXNEWS as well.

It was reported today that Rahman would seek safety outside Afghanistan. No word yet on what country, if any, he has been moved to.

UN via The TimesAdrian Edwards, a UN spokesman in Kabul, said that he expected that one of the countries interested in a peaceful solution to the case would give refuge to 41-year-old Mr Rahman.

Ok, found the AP original Story and it says that Mr. Rahman was released just outside of Kabul. Hopefully this is a somewhat of a ruse and he was met there and taken to safety.

AP via Yahoo News : Justice Minister Mohammed Sarwar Danish told The Associated Press that the 41-year-old was released from the high-security Policharki prison on the outskirts of Kabul late Monday.

"We released him last night because the prosecutors told us to," he said. "His family was there when he was freed, but I don't know where he was taken."

Does I don't know mean long gone? Does outskirts mean at the airport? It's possible the county that takes him may be a bit skittish about going public. I would hate to think of the other possibilities.

It's the Numbers, Stupid!

A Latvian friend of mine is puzzled by the enormous demonstrations erupting hither and yon in opposition to the Sensenbrenner Bill. His take is that it's rational to restrict entry, especially since the jobs these workers take would otherwise go to poorer Americans. So why does the "left" appear to hate poor people so much? Well, it's not really very complicated. It's the numbers.

In the wake of Ruy Teixeira's The Emerging Democratic Majority a coherent strategy has gained consensus. People in the Democratic Party have done a calculation that tells them the only way they can achieve an electoral majority in the future is if they swell the ranks of voters with large numbers of "people of color." The motivation is really quite cynical as well as short-sighted. Many hispanics vote conservative after they've been here long enough to become convinced of the American Ideology, so the only way this "browning of America" could actually work is if the influx is faster than our capacity to assimilate the new recruits into the melting pot. (And multiculturalism helps, because it insulates the immigrants from all that destructive Lockean talk of individual sovereignty.) It's also slightly racist, since it assumes that "people of color" can usually be talked into voting against their own long term interests if you keep them barefoot in their isolated enclaves. (Past generations might have called these "ghettos" but the politically correct term is "communities of color.")

In short, they've made a decision to undermine and and, if possible, destroy the ideology that holds the nation together, simply because it's inconvenient for them and they can't think of policies that fit within the constraints that Lockeanism imposes. The name of the game is "end around" and they're hoping they don't get shoved out of bounds. Somewhere along the line they made a commitment to a form of relabelled and reconditioned Marxism and have so lost touch that they don't even know the origins of their own belief system.

And since two ideas are always better than one, let me also observe that Hillary is no Clinton. She's about as politically tone-deaf as anyone I've ever seen, and that quip about good samaritanism and criminalizing Jesus just isn't going to cut it. People of faith don't like to be lectured by the likes of Hillary. Not only don't they believe she's got any moral legitimacy (especially of a religous nature) but she was waggling her paternalism like she was proud of it!

John Kerry's Porn Addiction

John Kerry has a compulsive pornography addiction, new documents released by The Smoking Gun reveal. In a rider stipulating important hotel ammenities including 'celery' and a 'recumbant bike', Kerry's 2004 election camp also insisted that:

...the ability to order movies n-suite (sic) should always be turned on and ready for JK's arrival. I know this may seem trivial but these things make JK very happy.
Okay, so nowhere in the documents is pornography mentioned. But, come on, you do the math. Pay-per-view hotel movies make John Kerry, not just happy, but very happy. Campaign financed in-room movies with the not-so-subtle disclosure that movie titles do not show up on credit card bill. That alone isn't enough to convince me John Kerry likes the porn, but, come on, have you seen Teresa Heinz-Kerry lately? You'd turn to porn, too.

Flying Seal Guts

(Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) The hunting of cute and fuzzy harp seal pups in the Gulf of St. Lawrence commenced on Saturday with a meddlesome crowd of animal rights activists and media providing interference.

From TheChronicleHerald.ca:

Protesters had to dodge flying seal guts pitched at them by angry hunters Saturday as tempers flared on the first day of Canada's East Coast seal slaughter.

News reporters and animal rights activists tried to get as close as permitted to the hunt on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, but their presence infuriated sealers as they hunted for scarce animals on small, drifting ice pans.

At one point, a sealing vessel charged up to a small Zodiac inflatable boat carrying reporters and protesters, and a sealer flung seal intestines into the midst of the observers.

Eeeeww! Being slathered with seal guts has to be particularly unpleasant. more...

Yes your honour, my client did kill, but a man has a limited tolerance when it comes to people blowing on his head and then yelling: "What kind of lame a** dandelion is this?"" Just at that moment, Matlock touched his frying pan and was shocked by his malfunctioning electric stove. Moussaoui says he was to be part of 9/11 attacks

So much for the defense.

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (Reuters) - Zacarias Moussaoui said on Monday he was supposed to fly a fifth airplane into the White House as part of the September 11 plot and he knew that two planes were due to fly into the World Trace Center.

In testimony at his sentencing trial, Moussaoui -- the only person charged in the United States in connection with the September 11 attacks -- said "shoebomber" Richard Reid was to join him as part of the crew in the suicide mission.

American Legion Wants to Stop Flow of Tax Dollars to ACLU

Though most Americans are unaware of it, the American Civil Liberties Union takes millions of dollars per year from the American taxpayers to cover attorneys' fees for suing them. This is based on a Federal law that requires a plaintiff's attorneys' fees to be paid by the government if a court finds that the plaintiff's civil rights have been violated. The law has become a gravy train for the rapacious solicitors who make the aCLU their career. more...

If we lose the propaganda war, we lose the war

W. Thomas Smith in Townhall:

Perception is everything. And when applied to the war in Iraq, perception, public opinion, and a far-reaching press are all variables that could ultimately have a hand in any setback or defeat for U.S. and coalition forces in that country...

I do, however, have concerns about false and deliberatively inflammatory propaganda aimed at manipulating audiences. I am not suggesting that any press – good or bad – be quashed. What’s good or bad is open to interpretation anyway. But I think we should recognize the difference between news (including reported facts, analysis, and opinion) and propaganda.

The most important variable in defeating an enemy is that they believe they will lose. Rarely will people fight for a cause that they believe will ultimately fail. That is why we must believe we can win, and why we must convince the enemy that they will lose. And that is why propaganda is such a positive tool. Unfortunately, most people believe that propaganda is somehow bad since it allegedly distorts reality. It can, but so can "unbiased" news. In fact, I would argue, that no news can be "fair and balanced". The very questions we ask are the outcome of our predispositions and therefore lead to inevetable biases.

We will only win the war on terror when the media bias becomes one in favor of American victory rather than one of defeatism.

Two American & One British Hostage Released in Nigeria

Good News! Xinhua:

hree Western oil workers, including two Americans and a Briton, were released on Monday after being held in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta for more than one month, but their captors immediately threatened more attacks on oil facilities.

"They were released to the state government at about 3:20 a.m. (0220 GMT) this morning," Abel Oshevire, spokesman for the Delta state government told Xinhua by telephone. "They are all in good health and with (Royal Dutch) Shell officials, their employer." ...

Oshevire said the government had assured the Ijaw militants belonging to Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta MEND)that they would not be attacked by the Nigerian army after the release.

"There were no conditions. They yielded to the governor plea to allow peace to prevail," he added.

The MEND confirmed the release in an e-mail to Xinhua. "No deal was reached. It was done at the instance of the communities which invited us," said Jomo Gbomo, a self-described spokesman for the militants, in the e-mail. "These communities are satisfied that they will be no longer attacked by the Nigerian military."

Thanks to George.
